Plan on cabinet timing by construction type, not by a retailer’s headline promise. Published estimates range from rapid processing for standard flat-pack orders to several months for fully custom work, and they generally cover cabinet production or shipping—not demolition, installation, or delays caused by weather and other events.
Returns are usually more restricted than ordinary online purchases because cabinets are sized, finished, hinged, assembled, and sometimes modified for one kitchen. A written quote, a complete pre-order check, and an inspection before installation protect you better than relying on a verbal estimate. Warranty coverage commonly follows the original purchaser and residential-use rules, with exclusions for installation problems, misuse, normal wood movement, and labor.

How long do kitchen cabinets take?
Lead time has several separate parts: order processing, manufacturing, transit, receiving, inspection, and installation. Ask the seller to identify each part in writing. A cabinet estimate that omits transit can make a short production window look like a guaranteed delivery date.
Published lead-time examples
| Seller or source | Total timing published | What the estimate covers | Product status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allen’s Cabinets (2026 FAQ) | 2–6 weeks | Cabinet order only; construction and installation are excluded | Stock cabinets |
| Allen’s Cabinets (2026 FAQ) | 6–8 weeks | Cabinet order only; construction and installation are excluded | Semi-custom cabinets |
| Allen’s Cabinets (2026 FAQ) | 8–12 weeks | Cabinet order only; construction and installation are excluded | Full-custom cabinets |
| KraftMaid (2026 FAQ) | Customers should expect 4–7 weeks to receive an order | The company describes normal production as about 4–6 weeks plus an added delivery week; weather and other unforeseen circumstances can materially change the schedule | Cabinet orders through dealers |
| Kitchen Cabinet Distributors (2026 FAQ) | Standard flat-pack orders are processed and shipped within 2 business days; assembled orders typically take less than 2 weeks before transit | Transit time depends on destination, so the published processing or assembly window is not a complete delivery date | Flat-pack and assembled orders |
These figures are planning ranges, not a universal industry guarantee. Stock status, construction method, the amount of customization, factory capacity, carrier performance, destination, and seasonal or weather disruptions all affect the result. Installation can add another scheduling dependency because the installer may need the complete order, an inspected replacement, or a corrected part before work begins.

How to turn an estimate into a usable schedule
- Identify the cabinet category. Confirm whether the quote is for stock, semi-custom, full-custom, flat-pack, or assembled cabinets. A change in category can change manufacturing time substantially.
- Separate production from transit. Request the expected factory-completion date, the ship date, the carrier transit estimate, and the date the seller considers the order delivered.
- Define the installation assumption. Ask whether the promised date assumes an empty room, completed flooring, approved plans, or a particular installer. Cabinet lead time does not include construction or installation unless the written agreement says it does.
- Ask whether the date is guaranteed. The quote should state what happens if production, freight, weather, or another unforeseen event extends the schedule. Ask whether partial shipments are allowed and whether you can receive usable components before backordered pieces.
- Build inspection time into the project. Do not schedule removal of existing cabinets or irreversible installation work for the same moment the boxes arrive. Count, photograph, and inspect first, then resolve shortages or damage.
Can I return cabinets if I change my mind?
There is no single return rule for kitchen cabinets. The seller’s written policy controls, and custom dimensions, finish selections, hinge orientation, assembly, and modifications can make an order nonreturnable even when an off-the-shelf product might otherwise qualify.
Example of a restrictive return policy
CNC Cabinetry’s 2025 policy manual charges a 25% restocking fee, requires the customer to pay return shipping, rejects returns of assembled or installed cabinets and many custom or modified items, and does not accept returns after 30 days. For damaged cabinets, it requires documentation and says the cabinets should not be installed before a claim is made. Those terms illustrate why a change-of-mind return can cost substantially more than the original purchase price.
Questions to answer before payment
- What is the exact cancellation cutoff, and is it measured from the order date, deposit date, production release, or shipment?
- What restocking percentage applies, and is it calculated on the cabinet price, accessories, or the entire order?
- Who pays return freight, and how is freight handled when only part of an order is returned?
- Which items are excluded because they are custom, modified, assembled, installed, stained, painted, or otherwise made to order?
- What inspection deadline applies after delivery, and does opening a carton affect eligibility?
- Will the refund go back to the original payment method, and when is it issued after the seller receives the goods?
Check every dimension, finish, door style, hinge side, drawer configuration, accessory, quantity, and assembly choice before the seller submits the order. Treat the transaction as project material rather than ordinary parcel merchandise: a small design error can affect an entire run of cabinets and may not be correctable through a normal return.

What does a cabinet warranty cover?
A cabinet warranty usually addresses defects in materials or workmanship, subject to ownership, use, installation, and handling conditions. It is not automatically an all-inclusive promise to pay for every problem that appears in a kitchen.
KraftMaid warranty language
“Cabinetworks Group Michigan LLC, warrants its cabinetry to be free of defects in material or workmanship for as long as they are owned by you, the original purchaser.”
The warranty says the company may repair or replace covered products. It excludes natural wood aging or variation, unfinished products, ordinary wear and tear, misuse, abuse, negligence, alteration, non-residential use, and improper installation, storage, or handling. It also states that labor to uninstall or install material may be excluded and that the warranty is not transferable.

General manufacturer terms described by Allen’s Cabinets
Allen’s Cabinets explains that manufacturer warranties generally apply to the original purchaser and indoor residential use. The usual exclusions include normal wear, improper storage, handling, installation, and modifications, with the remedy generally limited to repairing or replacing defective parts.
Six warranty points to compare
- Duration. Determine whether the promise is limited to a stated period or lasts for as long as the original purchaser owns the cabinetry. A “lifetime” phrase can still be limited by ownership and use conditions.
- Eligible claimant. Confirm whether coverage is restricted to the original purchaser and whether it transfers when the home is sold.
- Permitted use. Check whether the warranty is limited to indoor residential use and excludes commercial, rental, outdoor, or unusually harsh environments.
- Defect definition. Distinguish manufacturing defects from natural wood movement, grain variation, color variation, aging, and ordinary wear.
- Installation and handling. Ask who bears responsibility when cabinets were stored in unsuitable conditions, altered, installed incorrectly, or damaged during handling.
- Claim economics. Confirm whether the manufacturer pays labor, freight, removal, reinstallation, or only the replacement component, and identify the proof of purchase required.
Keep the invoice, order confirmation, product line, finish name, installation records, and photographs. These details help the seller identify the exact door, drawer front, molding, hinge, or finish if a replacement is approved.
What should I do if cabinets arrive damaged?
Damage claims are easiest to resolve when the condition of the shipment is documented before installation changes the evidence. Installation can also make a return or replacement exclusion apply, so pause work until the seller confirms the next step.

At delivery
- Photograph the shipment before opening. Capture every carton, pallet, label, crushed corner, puncture, water mark, and visible impact.
- Count the boxes. Compare carton labels with the packing list and note shortages before the carrier leaves when the delivery process allows it.
- Record visible damage on delivery paperwork. If the carrier requires an exception notation or signature comment, describe the damage precisely rather than signing a clean receipt.
- Open and inspect promptly. Check doors, drawer fronts, finished panels, cabinet boxes, hardware, and accessories before installation. Hidden damage can exist even when the outer carton looks intact.
- Keep all packaging. Retain cartons, foam, labels, and pallets until the seller’s inspection or claim period ends; the seller or carrier may need them to evaluate or transport a replacement.
- Report the issue through the required contact. Send the order number, invoice, packing-list comparison, photographs, and a concise description of each affected part within the seller’s stated window.
- Do not alter the evidence. Do not install, trim, repaint, drill, or discard a damaged component before the claim instructions are clear.
Protect the renovation schedule
Keep the existing cabinets in place until the new order has arrived and been inspected. KraftMaid specifically advises customers not to remove existing cabinets before delivery and inspection. If a replacement is needed, ask whether the seller will ship only the defective door, drawer front, molding, hardware, or complete cabinet, and whether the replacement will be sent by a different method.

Buying through a dealer and sourcing replacement parts
KraftMaid says it works through more than 3,500 dealer locations and does not sell cabinets directly online or from its factory. The dealer is therefore often the practical contact for changing an order, reporting a shortage, obtaining a replacement, or starting a warranty claim. Before paying a deposit, write down the dealer’s name, phone number, email, order number, and escalation contact.

Replacement hardware and hinges may be available online, while a local retailer can help source replacement doors, drawer fronts, and moldings. Touch-up paint and stain products are available for current finishes. Search terms such as replacement cabinet hinges are only a starting point: verify the cabinet brand and line, hinge overlay and mounting pattern, door thickness, opening angle, finish, and quantity before ordering. A visually similar hinge is not necessarily compatible.
Documents to keep with the order
- The signed quote showing cabinet line, construction category, quantities, finish, modifications, production time, transit time, installation assumptions, and promised ship or delivery date.
- The seller’s cancellation and return policy, including restocking, freight, custom-item, assembly, installation, inspection, and refund terms.
- The warranty document and any registration or proof-of-purchase requirement.
- Approved drawings, room measurements, elevation plans, and the final hardware schedule.
- Invoices, deposit receipts, packing lists, delivery paperwork, carton photographs, inspection photographs, and all claim correspondence.
Cabinet buying is safest when the order is treated as a coordinated construction package: confirm the design before release, obtain dates in writing, preserve the right to inspect, and understand the remedy before a defect or change of mind occurs.
