Kier has won four Thames Water contracts worth nearly £65 million, covering upgrades and design work at three sewage treatment works: Harpenden, Princes Risborough and Wisley. The package is part of Thames Water’s AMP8 investment programme, which runs from 2025 to 2030.
What sewage works is Kier upgrading for Thames Water?
The four contract elements are spread across three sites in Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire and Surrey. Harpenden is the largest announced project; Wisley has two separate contracts, one for power infrastructure and one for design services.

What is included in the Harpenden upgrade?
The £53.7 million Harpenden project is the package’s largest element. Kier says the upgrade will increase capacity by more than 50% to support future growth through 2036. The work is also intended to modernise parts of the works, improve treatment and help meet tighter environmental standards, with the health of the River Lea among the stated considerations. These are project aims, not reported completed results.

What will happen at Princes Risborough and Wisley?
Princes Risborough
The circa £7 million programme focuses on stormwater pumping and managing flows, alongside electrical and control-system modernisation. Kier says the work is intended to improve resilience and reliable site operation.
Wisley
Wisley has two distinct contracts. The circa £1.7 million initial power upgrade adds infrastructure for the site’s current needs and future investment. A separate circa £2.6 million contract with Binnies covers design services for the next phase of treatment improvements; it is design development, not the same thing as a construction package for that phase.

Will the sewage treatment works stay operational during the work?
Kier says delivery will be planned around the existing works continuing to operate, and its announcement says all three sites are to remain in service during delivery. Construction Enquirer also reported that the three works would remain operational. Construction Enquirer’s report

How does the package fit Thames Water’s AMP8 programme?
AMP8 is Thames Water’s 2025–2030 investment period. The utility’s September 2025 procurement update described a separate £840 million tranche covering 10 major capital projects at water and wastewater sites, aimed at improving resilience and environmental performance and supporting population growth. Thames Water also outlined that £840 million, 10-project programme in a July 2025 supplier-engagement announcement. Those programme figures are wider context, not the value of Kier’s award. Kier says the contracts support Thames Water’s AMP8 environmental commitments and cites the Environment Act 2021 target to reduce phosphorus discharged from treated wastewater by 80%. The company’s announcement does not say that these four contracts alone will deliver that target.
