Terra e Tuma Arquitetos Associados designed two independent homes for friends on a shared lot at Praia do Campeche in Florianópolis, Brazil. After subdivision and local zoning rules, each residence had a buildable area only 4.5 metres wide by 19 metres deep. The architects used a vertical, permeable arrangement to fit everyday living, daylight and ventilation into the narrow footprint while keeping each home private.
How the shared lot shaped the project
The clients’ brief joined a practical decision with a social one: two friends wanted to build homes in Florianópolis, sharing a plot while retaining separate residences. The architects describe the plan as a way to make closer, nearly communal coexistence possible without giving up autonomy.

The lot measures 12 metres across by 30 metres deep. Dividing it and applying local regulations left each house with a buildable area of 4.5 by 19 metres. That narrow envelope was not simply a dimension to work around; according to the architects’ project description, it informed the homes’ siting, construction choices and interior organization.

How the homes fit daily life into a narrow footprint
A vertical arrangement
The architects characterize the design as vertical and permeable. Rather than spreading rooms across a wide ground floor that the site could not provide, the homes organize living space upward. The double-height living room gives the ground level a sense of volume within the restricted width.
Light and ventilation at ground level
Large openings at ground level bring natural light into the interiors and support cross-ventilation, as described by the architects. The project account presents these openings as part of the response to the compact plan, not as a quantified claim about energy use or indoor comfort.

Bedrooms and a garden-facing suite
The principal suite faces the rear garden, making the outdoor space part of the private-room outlook. Two additional bedrooms are placed above. Together, this arrangement separates sleeping areas from the main living space while making use of the available depth and height.

The houses are conceived as an ensemble, but not as one shared dwelling. Each friend has an autonomous residence; the closeness comes from the homes’ relationship on a common lot and the possibility of neighborly interaction. The stated aim is respectful coexistence that does not erase privacy. The project description does not specify a shared room or facility, so the communal aspect is best understood as a social intention rather than a documented common program.
