There is no single table height that fits every child or setting. Preschool guidance, school-furniture charts and accessibility standards answer different questions: a useful choice depends on the child’s size, the matching seat and how the table will be used.
What height should a kids’ table be?
For preschool furniture, Hong Kong’s Education Bureau suggests average table heights of 510 mm for ages 2–4 and 530 mm for ages 4–6. Those are age-band averages for that educational context, not universal rules for every child or home.
A Polish government-linked school-furniture chart instead pairs table and seat dimensions with a child’s stature. In the United States, the Access Board’s ADA provision sets a different range—660–760 mm (26–30 inches)—for accessible dining and work surfaces for children’s use. That accessibility dimension is not a general recommendation for a child’s activity table.

How to choose a table for a child
- Start with the setting. Decide whether you need a home activity table, preschool or school furniture, or an accessible dining or work surface. The figures above come from different contexts and should not be treated as interchangeable.
- Check the child’s stature or relevant age band. Use a stature-based school chart when available; age alone does not determine a suitable height. The Polish chart’s size bands overlap, so it does not establish a single mandatory size for every child in a band.
- Match the chair as well as the tabletop. The school and preschool references pair table heights with seat heights. Comparing tabletop height alone leaves out an important part of the set.
- For adjustable furniture, verify the actual range. Check the table’s adjustment range and whether its chair can be adjusted or matched to it. The cited guidance does not evaluate particular adjustable products or establish their performance.
What the ADA children’s-use range means
The U.S. Access Board’s ADA provision specifies table and counter top heights of 660 mm (26 inches) minimum to 760 mm (30 inches) maximum for children’s use. It addresses accessible dining and work surfaces; it should not be used as a blanket target for household children’s tables.

The provision has an exception for surfaces used primarily by children five years and younger when compliant clear floor space for a parallel approach is provided. The exception depends on that condition and should not be generalized beyond it.

The figures are not competing universal standards. An accessibility provision specifies dimensions for a particular access context; a school chart relates furniture sizes to stature; and an operation manual gives average dimensions for preschool age bands. For a school or childcare setting, follow the applicable local requirements and furniture guidance. For a home table, use the dimensions as context, then consider the child’s size and the matching chair.
