Khudi Bari is a raised, modular shelter designed by Bangladeshi architect Marina Tabassum for vulnerable communities in Bangladesh. It is made to be dismantled, carried and reassembled by hand—not driven away on wheels. Its elevated two-level frame is intended to offer refuge during floods, but published sources do not provide a flood-depth rating or measured survival results.
What is Khudi Bari?
Khudi Bari means “small house.” Marina Tabassum Architects says development began in 2020, during the pandemic lockdown, as a potential shelter for marginalized, landless people living on the sand beds of the Meghna River. The project is intended for places where flooding and shifting conditions can put homes and livelihoods at risk.
The architect describes it as a modular space-frame structure with a raised, two-level arrangement. Instead of relying only on a larger ground-level footprint, the design uses vertical space and places a refuge above the ground. The project page lists built-area configurations of 64, 100 and 144 square feet. Marina Tabassum Architects’ project page gives the design description and area options.
How does the house move?
“Made to be moved” refers to the construction system, not a trailer or a wheeled tiny house. The structure is designed to be assembled and dismantled by hand, without electricity or mechanical power, then transported and put back together at another location. Vitra describes residents carrying out this process themselves. Vitra’s 2024 project feature describes the intended hand-assembly approach; New Atlas also clarifies that the shelter is not built on wheels.

That distinction matters in places where a home may need to be relocated as conditions change. Khudi Bari is not described in these sources as a floating house. Its approach is to provide an elevated shelter that can be taken apart and relocated, rather than to float with rising water.
Materials and layout
Marina Tabassum Architects identifies structural bamboo and steel joints, with locally sourced materials intended to reduce cost and carbon footprint. New Atlas, however, describes prefabricated recycled-aluminum nodes joining the bamboo members. Because the published descriptions differ on the connector material, it is safest to say that bamboo forms the structure and that accounts describe different joint or node specifications, rather than treating either connector description as a settled universal specification.

New Atlas reports a simple, single-room interior and notes that the space below the raised floor can offer the possibility of additional living area. That is a reported option, not evidence that every installed unit includes an enclosed lower level. Wall and roof materials can also vary: New Atlas names polycarbonate and metal sheeting as local options.
Where is Khudi Bari being used?
The project is aimed at geographically and climatically challenging locations in Bangladesh. Marina Tabassum Architects says implementation is taking place through FACE (Foundation for Architecture and Community Equity). The architect also says the structural system has been adapted for larger structures, including community centers in Rohingya refugee camps, and that current research is funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation.

Vitra reported on 13 June 2024 that more than 100 Khudi Bari had been installed. New Atlas repeated that figure in its 24 June 2024 coverage. These are dated reports, not a verified current total. Vitra’s article is the source for the 2024 installation count.
What is known—and not known—about flood protection?
The elevated layout is designed to provide refuge during floods, and the ability to dismantle and relocate the structure is part of its response to displacement risk. But the cited project descriptions do not publish a maximum flood depth, wind rating, engineering test results, or measured outcomes from specific floods. “Flood-resistant” should therefore be understood as describing the design intent and adaptation strategy, not a quantified guarantee that a unit will withstand any particular flood.

What does a Khudi Bari cost?
AKT II reported a £300 cost in an account published in 2022. New Atlas characterized the figure as an estimate from the prototype phase. It is an early reported cost, not a current quotation or a confirmed price for a standard, purchasable kit. The sources do not establish a current bill of materials, approved supplier, or retail product listing. AKT II’s 2022 account provides the early cost figure.

Its relocation method, raised form and local-material strategy are documented design features; performance ratings, current costs and a verified current installation count are not established by the cited sources.
