Its magnetic pull can help keep a screw on the driver while you line it up with a mounting hole and start driving—especially when you’re working in a tight space or holding the tool at an awkward angle. You can try this with a suitable magnet you already have; a dedicated magnetizer is optional.
Attach a magnet near the tip
- Choose a small rare-earth magnet that can attach to the screwdriver shaft.
- Place it on the shaft close to the tip, then set the screw against the driver.
- Guide the screw into the mounting hole and drive it as usual. The magnet can help hold the screw in place during positioning, but it does not guarantee that the screw will stay attached.
WOOD Magazine says a magnet as small as 1/4 inch in diameter can provide enough pull to hold a screw securely while positioning and driving it in different orientations or tight spaces. That is the magazine’s practical guidance, not a universal minimum established by comparative testing. WOOD Magazine’s tip, updated March 21, 2024.
If you don’t have a magnet to attach
You can magnetize a standard screwdriver with a neodymium bar magnet. Hadley Institute’s handout describes two approaches; follow that source’s specific directions rather than combining them into one procedure. Hadley Institute’s 2020 handout.
Repeated strokes with quarter-turns
Make repeated strokes along the screwdriver in the same direction, turning the screwdriver a quarter turn between strokes.

Handle-to-tip strokes
Move the magnet from the handle toward the tip, lift it away from the screwdriver, and repeat.
When a dedicated magnetizer makes sense
A screwdriver magnetizer/demagnetizer is a reusable option if you want a purpose-built tool or need to remove magnetism as well as add it. Compatibility varies, so check the manufacturer’s supported tool types before using one.

Klein MAG2
Klein says its MAG2 magnetizes and demagnetizes screwdriver tips and bits and requires no batteries. Its compatibility examples include precision screwdrivers, 1/4-inch slotted, #2 Phillips, and #3 Phillips. The listed dimensions are 2.203 inches long, 1.094 inches wide, and 0.703 inches high; the listed weight is 1.1 ounces. These are manufacturer specifications. See Klein’s MAG2 product page.
Cementex CP-SDMT
Cementex lists its CP-SDMT for screwdriver tips and insert bits, including slotted, Phillips, Torx/Star, Robertson/Square, and tamper-resistant types. Check the Cementex CP-SDMT product listing for the tool types it supports.

For standard hex bits: a sleeve is different
A magnetic sleeve-and-bit setup is not the same as attaching a magnet to an ordinary screwdriver shaft. FastCap describes Tip Mag as a magnetic sleeve paired with Taper Lock for standard 1/4-inch hex bits. Its product page showed “Out of stock” when accessed on October 8, 2026, so that page does not establish current availability. See FastCap’s Tip Mag page.
The sources describe practical methods and product compatibility, but do not provide controlled comparisons, success rates, or evidence that one option holds screws better than another.
