Yes. JR Central opened a controlled section of the future Kanagawa Prefecture Station construction site in Hashimoto, Sagamihara, to the public during Sagamihara Linear Festa on October 24–25, 2026. Visitors entered part of the underground platform level on guided tours, making this the first reported public viewing of the station’s underground platform area. It was a one-off festival access arrangement—not a permanent attraction—and places for the underground tour were allocated by a separate application that had already closed.
What was opened to the public?
The viewing covered part of the underground third-level track floor, the level planned to contain the Chuo Shinkansen’s main line, passing tracks and passenger platforms. JR Central restricted access to guided groups for safety and construction-control reasons. A general festival entry ticket was required, plus a separate track-floor viewing ticket; applications for that additional ticket closed on October 14, 2026.

Visitors could write messages on track-facing walls that will not be accessible to the public once the station is operating. Reports said demand for the underground tours was about 12 times the number of available places. That ratio refers to tour applications, not total attendance at Sagamihara Linear Festa.
Where is the Kanagawa maglev station construction site?
The provisional Kanagawa Prefecture Station is being built in the Hashimoto area of Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture. The festival access point was about a three-minute walk from JR Hashimoto Station and Keio Hashimoto Station, making it convenient by rail even though the construction area itself is not normally open to visitors.

How large and deep will the station be?
Reports citing Kyodo describe a substantial underground station box. The published dimensions and layout are:
| Feature | Reported specification | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Station box length | About 680 metres | Reported by Kyodo in October 2026 |
| Maximum width | About 50 metres | Reported by Kyodo in October 2026 |
| Platform depth | Around 30 metres underground | Reported by Kyodo in October 2026 |
| Platforms | Two | Planned station configuration |
| Tracks | Four | Includes main-line and passing-track functions |
The design is unlike an open conventional platform. Walls separate passengers from the tracks, with boarding openings in those walls and the platforms positioned behind them. That arrangement is intended to keep the passenger area physically separated from the high-speed maglev guideway.
Can you visit the site now?
Not as a normal walk-in visitor. JR Central’s standing policy is that construction sites are generally closed to the public for safety and to avoid disrupting the construction schedule. The Linear Festa opening was an exceptional, controlled event co-hosted by Kanagawa Prefecture, Sagamihara City and JR Central.
What happened to the previous viewing area?
A temporary Sagamihara Linear Place overlook operated from June 2023 through January 2024. JR Central says it closed when construction progress made continued operation impractical. The closure illustrates why a construction overlook should not be treated as a permanent visitor facility.

What did the guided tour show?
The tour exposed a limited portion of the third-level track floor rather than the entire station. Participants saw the underground platform-area construction and could leave messages on surfaces that will later be inaccessible. The event did not amount to unrestricted access to the station box or an opportunity to explore the active worksite independently.
When will the station be finished?
The construction completion target has moved from the original spring 2027 goal to around spring 2030. That is a reported construction milestone, not a guarantee that passenger trains will begin running at that date. Large underground projects can have separate civil-engineering, systems-installation, testing and regulatory stages after the main structure is completed.
When will the Chuo Shinkansen maglev open?
News reports citing TBS said commercial service through the Kanagawa station is expected no earlier than 2036. JR Central was reported to be preparing a revised opening outlook by the end of 2026. Because that date is an October 2026 outlook rather than a final timetable, it may change.
The station forms part of the Chuo Shinkansen superconducting-maglev project linking Tokyo and Nagoya, with a planned eventual extension to Osaka. JR Central describes the line as a second high-speed transport artery alongside the Tokaido Shinkansen, intended to shorten travel times and add resilience as existing infrastructure ages or is affected by disasters.

- Package Included: two rolls of monopole magnetic tape are included, each measuring 9.84Ft; The total provided length of 19.68ft allows for sharing with friends or family during collaborative sessions; This quantity supports multiple application and repeated experiments, making it suitable for science project kits involving magnetic levitation trains. If you encounter any problems during use, please contact us promptly
- Dimensions Information: each magnetic tape roll has a width of 2cm/0.787inch and a thickness of 3mm/0.12inch; Offering ample material for comprehensive track layouts
- Monopole Magnetic Configuration: this tape uses a monopole magnet arrangement; The side with indentations is the N pole, while the backing with adhesive is the S pole; When N poles face each other, they generate magnetic repulsion, creating the levitation effect essential for science projects that demonstrate magnetic principles
- Strong Adhesive Backing: an adhesive layer is applied to the S pole backing; This integrated feature means no additional glue is required for application; The tape can be directly attached to both tracks and vehicle models, simplifying the setup process for magnetic levitation demonstrations
- Easy to Use: attach the tape with the N pole facing upward on the track; On the vehicle bottom, attach the tape with the N pole facing downward; Ensure alignment between the track and vehicle tapes for effective levitation; It is suggested to avoid using overly heavy vehicle models for optimal results
What can you do if you missed the construction opening?
There is no indication of regular public tours at the Kanagawa worksite. For a year-round railway-technology visit, the SCMAGLEV and Railway Park offers standard museum admission rather than construction-site access. Its published visitor information lists hours of 10:00–17:30 and a normal Tuesday closure; admission fees are set out on the museum’s current visitor-information page and should be checked before travel.
The museum provides a different experience: finished rolling stock, explanatory displays and technology exhibits instead of a live underground station. It is therefore a practical alternative for learning about maglev without waiting for another exceptional construction event.

What should prospective visitors watch for next?
- Official announcements: Any future viewing opportunity would need to come from JR Central, Sagamihara City or Kanagawa Prefecture.
- Ticket conditions: A future event could use a lottery or separate timed ticket, as the 2026 track-floor viewing did.
- Schedule changes: The spring 2030 construction target and 2036-or-later service outlook are subject to revision.
- Access limits: Even if another opening occurs, active underground works are likely to remain guided and physically restricted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Was the 2026 opening a permanent visitor attraction?
No. It was tied to Sagamihara Linear Festa and covered only a controlled portion of the active underground works. JR Central’s general policy is to keep construction sites closed to the public.
How competitive was the underground tour ticket?
Contemporary reporting put demand at roughly 12 applications for every available place. That figure measures the underground-tour allocation, not attendance across the whole festival.

Could visitors enter the future maglev tracks themselves?
No. The event provided guided access to part of the third-level track floor; it was not unrestricted entry onto the guideway or a self-guided station tour.
What is the closest regular alternative for maglev enthusiasts?
The SCMAGLEV and Railway Park is open year-round, generally from 10:00 to 17:30, and normally closes on Tuesdays. It offers museum exhibits rather than access to the Kanagawa construction site.
The Bottom Line
The Kanagawa station worksite did open briefly to the public in October 2026, but only through a limited, ticketed guided tour. The station is now targeted for construction completion around spring 2030, while passenger service is reported as no earlier than 2036 and remains subject to a revised timetable.
