Kalanchoe Plant Care: Light, Watering, Flowers and Reblooming

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, often sold as florist or Christmas kalanchoe, is a flowering succulent that grows well indoors when it receives bright filtered light, drains quickly, and dries between waterings. To make it flower again, give it a sustained period of long, uninterrupted nights; the method can work, but reblooming is not guaranteed in every home.

What a florist kalanchoe is

The colorful potted plant sold by florists and garden centers is usually Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, a succulent in the stonecrop family (Crassulaceae) native to Northeast Madagascar. “Florist kalanchoe” and “Christmas kalanchoe” are common trade names. Its thick leaves store water, while clusters of small flowers may be red, pink, orange, yellow or white, depending on the cultivar. North Carolina State University Extension describes the plant and its natural history in its Kalanchoe blossfeldiana profile.

Although it is sold in bloom, the plant is not a disposable annual. With suitable light, drainage and temperature, it can remain a houseplant after the first flush of flowers. The main challenge is managing the light-and-dark cycle that triggers a new set of buds.

Light: bright, filtered exposure is the safe starting point

Place kalanchoe in bright indoor light. North Carolina Extension recommends bright indirect sunlight or partial shade. A bright east- or west-facing window is often easier to manage than an unfiltered south-facing window, but the actual intensity through glass varies with season, latitude and obstructions.

  • Give the plant several hours of strong ambient light each day so stems remain compact and leaves stay firm.
  • Protect foliage from prolonged, intense direct sun, especially hot afternoon rays. North Carolina Extension advises afternoon shade because extended direct exposure can scorch leaves.
  • If the only suitable window receives harsh midday sun, move the pot back from the glass or filter the light with a sheer curtain.
  • Turn the pot occasionally so one side does not lean toward the window.

Light affects flowering as well as foliage. A plant can look healthy in a dim room for a while yet fail to produce new buds. Increase brightness gradually rather than moving a shaded plant straight into intense sun, which can cause sudden leaf damage.

Potting mix, container and watering

Use a well-drained cactus or succulent potting mix. A container must have a drainage opening, and the pot should never stand in a saucer or cachepot filled with runoff. These measures reduce the chance that waterlogged roots will remain wet after irrigation. North Carolina Extension recommends a cactus- or succulent-suitable mix, while Iowa State Extension explains the drying-and-watering cycle in its kalanchoe care guidance.

How to water

  1. Check the potting mix before watering rather than following a fixed weekly calendar. Indoor temperature, light, pot size and the time of year all change how quickly the mix dries.
  2. When the mix has dried, water thoroughly enough that excess exits the drainage hole.
  3. Empty the saucer or outer container. Do not let the pot sit in collected water.
  4. Wait for the mix to dry again before repeating the process, but do not leave the plant so dry that it wilts.

Iowa State specifically advises allowing the soil to dry between waterings without permitting the plant to wilt. The extension guidance does not establish one universal interval, so a calendar rule such as “every seven days” can be misleading. A plant in a cool, bright room may need water less often than one in a warm room with active growth.

Signs that watering needs a closer look

  • Persistently wet mix, a sour smell or softening at the base suggests that drainage or watering frequency needs correction.
  • Wrinkled leaves and a visibly wilted plant indicate that the mix has stayed dry too long.
  • Leaves scorched on the window-facing side point first to excessive direct sun, not automatically to a lack of water.

Temperature and placement

Iowa State Extension gives moderate indoor ranges for kalanchoe: 50–70 °F (10–21 °C) during the day and 45–65 °F (7–18 °C) at night. Cooler conditions help prolong flowers, according to the same guidance. These are source-specific recommendations rather than a promise that every plant will perform identically at those temperatures.

Keep the pot away from heating vents, fireplaces, cold drafts and glass that becomes extremely hot or cold. Stable conditions make it easier to judge watering because the mix will not swing between rapid drying and prolonged chill. During the rebloom dark-treatment described below, Iowa State recommends 65–70 °F days and 60–65 °F nights.

How kalanchoe flowers and why reblooming takes planning

Kalanchoe is a short-day plant. As Iowa State Consumer Horticulture Specialist Aaron Steil explains, “The kalanchoe is a short-day plant.” In practical terms, flower formation is promoted by long, uninterrupted periods of darkness, not by simply adding more daytime light.

Iowa State describes a schedule of 14-hour nights for six weeks to induce buds. During that treatment, the plant receives the temperature range of 65–70 °F by day and 60–65 °F at night. Any room light that reaches the plant during the intended dark period can interfere with the signal, so consistency matters. The schedule is a method, not a guarantee; Iowa State notes that reblooming can be difficult for some home gardeners.

A practical rebloom sequence

  1. Finish the current display. Keep the plant in bright indirect light and continue the dry-between-waterings routine while flowers fade.
  2. Prune after flowering. The New York Botanical Garden guide describes pruning after bloom to encourage branching. Remove spent flower structures and shape overly long growth with clean tools.
  3. Set up the dark period. Provide 14 hours of uninterrupted darkness each night for about six weeks, following Iowa State’s stated schedule. A light-proof room can work; otherwise, cover the plant so household lighting cannot reach it.
  4. Keep daytime light bright. When the dark period ends each day, return the plant to bright indirect light. Do not compensate for a missed dark period with extra daytime sun.
  5. Watch for buds. Continue normal drainage and watering practices while the plant responds. Bud formation may take longer or fail, depending on the plant and indoor conditions.
  6. Return to ordinary display conditions. Once buds are evident, maintain bright filtered light and avoid moving the plant into harsh afternoon sun.

The New York Botanical Garden also explains covering the plant to create long nights, but its suggested timing differs from Iowa State’s schedule. There is therefore no single calendar date that applies to every home. Start the dark treatment far enough ahead of the bloom period you want, and adjust for your room’s natural daylight and artificial lighting.

After flowering: pruning and propagation

Pruning has two purposes: removing the old display and encouraging a more branched shape. The New York Botanical Garden guide recommends pruning after flowering. Make cuts with clean, sharp tools and avoid removing so much foliage that the plant has little leaf area left to support recovery.

The same guide describes propagation from stem cuttings. A cutting is a way to make a new plant from a healthy piece of the parent, but the guide does not establish one universal rooting medium or schedule. If you propagate, label each cutting with the date and keep its conditions consistent so you can tell whether growth is beginning. Continue to use a medium and container that drain well.

Troubleshooting common problems

The leaves are scorched or bleached

Move the plant out of prolonged direct afternoon sun and into bright indirect light or partial shade. North Carolina Extension specifically warns that sustained direct sun can scorch foliage. Remove only leaves that are badly damaged; correcting exposure is more important than cosmetic pruning.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The pot stays wet

Check that the container has an open drainage hole and that the mix is intended for cacti or succulents. Empty standing water immediately. If the mix remains wet for a long time, repotting into a better-drained medium may be necessary, but do not water again until the existing mix has dried.

The plant wilts between waterings

Shorten the interval between checks and water when the mix has dried, while still allowing excess to drain away. Iowa State’s advice is to let the soil dry between waterings without allowing the plant to wilt; neither constant saturation nor severe drought follows that guidance.

The plant has healthy leaves but no new flowers

Insufficient brightness can limit flowering, and an inconsistent night period can prevent the short-day response. Give the plant bright daytime light and, if you are attempting rebloom, provide the six-week treatment of 14-hour nights described by Iowa State. Keep expectations realistic because the extension notes that reblooming may be difficult for some home growers.

Flowers fade quickly

Review temperature and placement. Iowa State says cooler conditions help prolong flower life and gives a 45–65 °F night range and 50–70 °F day range for ordinary care. Avoid hot vents, direct heat and abrupt temperature changes.

Keeping kalanchoe safe around pets

The ASPCA lists Kalanchoe species as toxic to dogs and cats. Reported clinical signs include vomiting and diarrhea; abnormal heart rhythm is listed as rare. Place the pot where pets cannot chew leaves, stems or fallen plant material. Hanging baskets are not automatically safe if a cat can reach them, and dropped leaves should be removed promptly.

If a dog or cat eats any part of the plant, contact a veterinarian or an animal poison-control service promptly. Keep the plant label or a photograph available so the species can be identified. The ASPCA’s plant-specific information is available at its Kalanchoe listing.

Choosing a healthy plant

When buying a florist kalanchoe, verify that the label identifies Kalanchoe blossfeldiana or a clearly stated cultivar. Compare plants using observable condition rather than an unsupported claim that one seller or variety is universally better.

What to compare What to check
Identity Species or cultivar name is stated and matches the plant you intend to grow.
Bloom color Choose the displayed color or a labeled color; unopened buds may not show the final shade clearly.
Plant size Confirm the stated dimensions and whether the listing includes the decorative cover pot.
Roots and foliage Look for firm foliage and a container that drains; avoid plants sitting in stagnant water.
Shipping Check shipping geography, weather restrictions and the seller’s stated live-arrival policy.

If you need replacement media, look for a cactus and succulent potting mix described as well draining. A decorative container can be used as an outer cover, but the growing pot inside still needs a drainage opening.

Quick care reference

Care factor Evidence-based target Important qualification
Light Bright indirect sunlight or partial shade Prolonged direct sun, especially afternoon exposure, can scorch leaves.
Soil Well-drained cactus or succulent mix Do not allow the container to stand in water.
Water Let the mix dry between waterings Do not wait until the plant wilts; no universal calendar interval is established.
Ordinary temperature guidance 50–70 °F days; 45–65 °F nights Iowa State’s ranges; cooler conditions can prolong flowers.
Rebloom dark treatment 14-hour nights for six weeks Iowa State method; uninterrupted darkness is required and success is not guaranteed.
Pet safety Keep away from dogs and cats ASPCA lists Kalanchoe spp. as toxic.

Bottom line for long-term care

Give florist kalanchoe bright filtered light, a fast-draining succulent mix and water only after the mix dries, while preventing both standing water and severe wilting. After flowering, prune to encourage branching. If you want another bloom cycle, use a consistent six-week period of 14-hour nights and moderate temperatures, understanding that indoor results vary. Because the plant is toxic to dogs and cats, make an out-of-reach location part of the initial setup rather than an afterthought.
