“Kalanchoe” is a genus, not one plant with a single care routine. The familiar flowering florist kalanchoe, Kalanchoe blossfeldiana, and the fuzzy-leaved panda plant, K. tomentosa, have different looks and species-specific guidance. For both, the basics are bright light, a potting medium that drains well, and letting the soil dry between waterings. Identify your plant where possible before following more tailored advice.
Which kind of kalanchoe do you have?
Start with the plant’s appearance and, if available, its nursery label. The genus includes many species, including K. beharensis, K. daigremontiana, K. delagoensis, K. luciae and K. marmorata. Care instructions for the two species below should not automatically be treated as a complete guide to every kalanchoe.
| Type | What it looks like | What to know about care |
|---|---|---|
| Florist kalanchoe (K. blossfeldiana), also called coral bells | Scalloped leaves and clusters of colorful flowers. | Bright indirect light or partial shade; reblooming depends on long, consistently dark nights. |
| Panda plant (K. tomentosa) | Fuzzy leaves. | Bright indirect light and a well-drained succulent mix; hot direct sun can burn the foliage. |
Choose by the feature you want: K. blossfeldiana is grown for its flowers, while panda plant is valued for its foliage and texture. The species differ in appearance and have distinct care profiles; there is no basis here for calling one universally easiest.
How much light does kalanchoe need?
Put the covered types in a bright indoor spot, but avoid prolonged harsh direct sun. NC State Extension recommends bright indirect light or partial shade for K. blossfeldiana and warns that prolonged direct sun can scorch its leaves. For panda plant, NC State recommends bright indirect light for at least six hours per day and cautions that hot direct sun can burn the foliage.
#1 Best Overall
- - The plant you receive is about 15 to 25 Centimeters tall with minimum soil. No pot. - 3 units in a pack - Become more beautiful when it gets sunlight - Easy to grow, and it is fun to see it growing.
For K. blossfeldiana, NC State also recommends 6 to 8 hours of bright light every day to ensure blooming. That figure is species-specific; it is not a universal light target for every kalanchoe. If moving a plant into stronger sun, increase exposure gradually.
How should you water and pot kalanchoe?
For both featured types, choose a well-drained growing medium and let the soil dry between waterings. A cactus or succulent potting mix suits these species. Drainage matters alongside watering: excess water left around the roots can contribute to rot.

- For panda plant: NC State recommends allowing the soil to dry between waterings. Wrinkled or shriveled leaves can indicate too little water; yellow or mushy leaves or stems can indicate overwatering.
- For florist kalanchoe: It is drought tolerant. NC State advises letting the soil dry and then watering deeply. Iowa State advises allowing the soil to dry between waterings without letting the plant wilt.
Do not leave a florist kalanchoe sitting in water that has collected in a pot sleeve. Overwatering can cause root or stem rot.
How can you get florist kalanchoe to bloom again?
The long-night method applies to flowering K. blossfeldiana, not to every species in the genus. It is a short-day plant: flower buds form after long nights. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says to provide six weeks of 14-hour nights, with natural daylight during the day; NC State gives the same minimum period of darkness.

- PLANT TYPE: Kalanchoe pinnata, also known as Life Plant or Air Plant, is a succulent plant species known for its distinctive leaf structure
- SIZE: Young seedling measures approximately 2 inches in height, perfect for starting your indoor garden collection
- GROWTH POTENTIAL: Mature plants can reach heights of up to 4-6 feet when provided with proper care and growing conditions
- CARE REQUIREMENTS: Thrives in well-draining soil with moderate watering and bright, indirect sunlight exposure
- PLANTING VERSATILITY: Suitable for both indoor container growing and outdoor gardens in USDA zones 10-12
- Provide natural daylight during the day. Keep the plant in bright light suited to K. blossfeldiana.
- Give it a consistent, uninterrupted 14-hour dark period each night. Continue this routine for six weeks so the plant can form flower buds.
- After the induction period, return it to its usual bright indoor location. Bud formation and flowering are not guaranteed.
Iowa State’s guidance also gives temperature conditions for the induction period, but the available information here does not specify the figures, so no temperature target is included.
How do you propagate kalanchoe?
Propagation options vary by species. Use healthy plant material; the method and species affect results, and the cited extension guidance does not compare success rates.
- K. blossfeldiana: UF/IFAS lists seed, leaf, stem or tip cuttings. NC State also describes stem or leaf cuttings. Plantlets sometimes form along the leaf margins.
- Panda plant: NC State describes propagation by leaf or offshoot.
What pests and problems should you watch for?
Extension profiles list mealybugs, aphids, scale and spider mites among possible pests. Powdery mildew and leaf spotting are also noted. Check leaves and stems periodically, and pay attention to mushy growth or signs of rot, which can follow overwatering. These profiles identify issues to monitor; they do not establish a specific treatment protocol.
