It does not, on its own, make them favourites: they have reached their first WNBA Finals after sweeping the defending champion Las Vegas Aces, but their best-of-seven series against the Atlanta Dream has not yet begun. Game 1 is scheduled for October 17, 2026.
What Salaün brings off the bench
Salaün appeared in all 40 regular-season games for Golden State in 2026, coming off the bench each time. She averaged 12.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 22.1 minutes per game, leading all reserves in scoring. The WNBA’s October 4 announcement named her Sixth Player of the Year unanimously, with all 74 panel votes (WNBA, October 4, 2026; Golden State Valkyries, October 4, 2026).

The league also reported reserve-player single-season records of 509 points and 93 made three-pointers for Salaün, as well as the best cumulative plus-minus among reserves, at +160 (WNBA, October 4, 2026). These figures establish that she was unusually productive in a reserve role. They do not show that her responsibilities or value were reduced; “reserve role” is the more precise description.
How much does that change Golden State’s title case?
A high-scoring reserve gives a team another reliable source of offense without requiring that player to start. Salaün’s scoring and three-point production make her bench contribution a meaningful part of Golden State’s case. The available figures do not, however, establish a specific tactical effect in the Finals, such as how Atlanta will defend her or how her minutes will change in the series.

Golden State’s postseason results make the argument stronger. The Valkyries swept Las Vegas 3–0 in the semifinals, eliminating the defending champions and reaching the franchise’s first Finals. They clinched with an 87–77 overtime win in Game 3 (Golden State Valkyries, October 10, 2026). A series win over the reigning champions is substantial playoff evidence, but it is not a result against Atlanta.
Why “championship favourites” is still a forecast
The Aces series is an important test of Golden State’s credentials, not a direct comparison with its Finals opponent. Before the semifinals, the WNBA noted that Las Vegas had swept Golden State 3–0 in regular-season play. The preview framed that matchup as a contest between Las Vegas’s 91.5 points per game and a Valkyries defense that allowed 75.1 points per game in the regular season (WNBA, October 3, 2026). Those numbers describe regular-season context for the Aces series; they should not be treated as a comparison of Golden State and Atlanta.

Golden State then reversed the regular-season result with a playoff sweep, which is compelling evidence of its ability to compete under postseason conditions. Still, a finalist is not automatically the favourite. The cited information establishes neither an Atlanta-Golden State advantage nor the teams’ current player availability and workload. Without those comparisons, the sound conclusion is that the Valkyries have a strong title case, not that the case has been settled.
