DIRIGERA

I’ve looked at IKEA’s new Matter smart-home gadgets—this is the best one

TIMMERFLOTTE is IKEA’s best new smart-home gadget overall: a $9.99 Matter temperature/humidity sensor with broad usefulness and no mandatory DIRIGERA purchase. Compare the range, setup, Thread requirements and safety caveats.

Best overall: IKEA TIMMERFLOTTE. At the US price snapshot of $9.99, this Matter-compatible temperature and humidity sensor is inexpensive, broadly useful and easier to justify than building an entire smart-lighting system. It needs AAA batteries and a compatible Matter controller, but not necessarily IKEA’s $119.99 DIRIGERA hub.

That is not the right answer for every room. KAJPLATS is the strongest lighting buy, GRILLPLATS is the most useful simple automation, and KLIPPBOK could deliver the greatest value when an early leak warning prevents serious damage.

What is new about IKEA’s smart-home range?

IKEA announced 21 new Matter-compatible products on November 6, 2025, with rollout continuing through late 2025 and 2026. The range is built around three groups: lighting, sensors and control. It includes KAJPLATS bulbs, motion and door sensors, temperature/humidity and air-quality sensors, leak sensors, smart plugs and BILRESA remotes. IKEA’s launch announcement presents the refresh as a move toward wider compatibility and simpler setup.

These are not all replacements for one another. The new Matter products sit alongside older TRÅDFRI and other Zigbee devices. Some older plugs and remotes are being phased out or marked “last chance,” so a discounted older model is not automatically the better bargain. Matter is the important change: a device can be added to compatible Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, Homey and other ecosystems instead of being locked to IKEA’s app.

  • Requirements: Best with SmartThings App and Aeotec Smart Home Hub / Samsung SmartThings Hub or compatible device with SmartThings Hub functionality (connected devices sold separately). Works with other compatible Zigbee hubs - check with your manufacturer.
  • Compatibility: Requires Zigbee hub. Works with Google, Amazon Alexa, SmartThings, and other devices utilizing Zigbee communication protocols

Do you need DIRIGERA?

Not necessarily. If you already have a suitable Matter controller, you can add a new IKEA Matter device without buying DIRIGERA. Matter still requires a controller, and Matter-over-Thread products also need a Thread border router. Platform features can differ, so “Matter-compatible” does not mean every automation appears identically in Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and IKEA Home smart.

DIRIGERA costs $119.99 in the US and connects to power and your router by Ethernet. It acts as a Matter controller, includes Thread border-router functionality, runs IKEA Home smart and bridges older IKEA Zigbee products. That makes it much more compelling for an existing IKEA household than for someone buying one $9.99 sensor.

Starting setup Approximate US hardware cost Who it suits
TIMMERFLOTTE alone $9.99, plus AAA batteries A buyer who already has a compatible Matter controller
TIMMERFLOTTE plus DIRIGERA About $129.98 before batteries and tax An IKEA-heavy home needing older-device support and central management

Why TIMMERFLOTTE is the best overall

TIMMERFLOTTE has the best balance of usefulness, price, platform flexibility and low failure impact. It reports indoor temperature and humidity, making it useful in bedrooms, bathrooms, basements, plant areas and rooms where condensation is a concern. You can use readings for comfort notifications, humidity alerts or routines for a suitable dehumidifier.

It uses widely available AAA batteries, sold separately, rather than requiring a proprietary cell. Its simple purpose is easier to understand than an elaborate lighting system, and the $9.99 hardware price remains attractive when you already own a Matter controller. IKEA lists the sensor at its official product page.

Do not treat it as a laboratory instrument or an air-quality monitor. IKEA establishes the temperature and humidity functions, not precision accuracy or measurements such as particulate matter and carbon dioxide. Placement, battery condition, controller and Thread network will affect the experience.

Where it fits

  • Place it where the reading represents the room, away from direct sunlight, radiators, vents and water spray.
  • Use it for alerts and trends, not as a substitute for a calibrated environmental monitor when health, building compliance or equipment protection depends on accuracy.
  • Keep spare AAA batteries available; low-cost sensors still require maintenance.

Best alternatives by use case

Best lighting buy: KAJPLATS

KAJPLATS is the best choice when the goal is smart lighting. The 1,100-lumen E26 color-and-white-spectrum bulb listed at $12.99 offers more useful brightness than many cheap starter bulbs. IKEA sells multiple bases, brightnesses and color capabilities, so verify the exact model. WIRED found setup straightforward across IKEA Home smart and Apple Home, while noting that more expensive bulbs can offer additional features. Read the range at IKEA’s catalogue.

Best practical automation: GRILLPLATS

At $7.99 for the plug-only version, GRILLPLATS can make a suitable lamp or fan remotely controllable. A plug normally supplies on/off control; it does not make an appliance intrinsically smart. Use it only with equipment designed to operate safely unattended and, where relevant, to resume safely after power returns. Do not use it for space heaters, irons, hair-styling appliances, or any device that could cause fire, flood or injury if switched on unexpectedly.

Best risk-adjusted purchase: KLIPPBOK

At $9.99, KLIPPBOK can provide an early warning under a sink, near a washing machine, water heater, dishwasher or basement plumbing. It cannot stop the leak, replace a visual inspection or substitute for an automatic shutoff system. Availability is worth checking in IKEA’s current safety listings.

Best inexpensive contact sensor: MYGGBETT

MYGGBETT suits doors, windows and cabinets, where an open/closed event can trigger a light or notification. It is an automation sensor, not a monitored alarm: it has no camera, professional monitoring, tamper protection or emergency response.

Use caution with MYGGSPRAY

MYGGSPRAY is inexpensive and useful for lights in hallways, entrances, stairs and garages. However, WIRED noted the lack of a motion-history view, and IKEA’s product page contains customer reports of repeated disconnections. Tom’s Guide reported no connection problems during a week of testing and said IKEA had indicated a firmware fix was coming. The evidence supports a modest recommendation for lighting, not a claim that it is a dependable security or occupancy sensor. See IKEA’s listing and WIRED’s hands-on report.

Best specialist sensor: ALPSTUGA

ALPSTUGA costs $34.99 and is the better fit when indoor air quality—not temperature and humidity—is the specific objective. It is not the best general-value purchase, and you should confirm which measurements, alerts and automations your chosen platform exposes.

Best physical control: BILRESA

BILRESA remotes start at $6.99 for a dual-button model and $9.99 for a scroll-wheel version. They are useful beside a bed, sofa or entrance when phone and voice control are inconvenient, but they make sense after you own compatible lights or plugs. Some versions have weaker customer ratings.

How to set up an IKEA Matter device without DIRIGERA

  1. Confirm that your Apple, Google, Amazon or other Matter controller is online. If the product uses Thread, confirm that a Thread border router is available.
  2. Install fresh batteries where required and follow the product manual to enter pairing mode.
  3. Open the compatible smart-home app and choose its option to add a Matter device.
  4. Scan the Matter QR code on the yellow packaging insert.
  5. If scanning fails, enter the 11-digit Matter code printed on the product or packaging.
  6. Assign the device to a room, create one automation and test it manually before relying on it.

IKEA documents this QR-code and numeric-code path in its official guide.

Setup with DIRIGERA

  1. Connect DIRIGERA to power and the router with Ethernet.
  2. Add the hub in the IKEA Home smart app.
  3. Pair the Matter product using its QR or numeric code.
  4. Place it in the correct room and configure scenes, routines or notifications.
  5. If you have older TRÅDFRI products, verify that they appear through DIRIGERA before removing an older gateway.

What to do when pairing fails or a device goes offline

  • Replace or reseat the batteries.
  • Move the device closer to the Matter controller or Thread border router.
  • Confirm that the controller and network are online.
  • Retry with the numeric Matter code.
  • Reset the product using its official manual, then pair it again.
  • If disconnections continue, record the controller, app, firmware, distance and walls involved; Matter/Thread behavior depends on the whole network, not just the device.

Stable local Wi-Fi or Thread connectivity and an active controller are important when IKEA Matter products appear offline.

Buying checklist

  • Do you already have a compatible Matter controller?
  • Does your setup provide Thread if the product requires it?
  • Are batteries included, and are they AAA?
  • For KAJPLATS, is the base, lumen output and color type correct?
  • Is the sensor rated for the intended indoor or outdoor location?
  • Do you need DIRIGERA for older IKEA devices or IKEA Home smart management?
  • Is the appliance safe to switch remotely with GRILLPLATS?
  • Have you checked the current US price and availability?

For compatible-controller guidance and manuals, use IKEA’s manuals page. Batteries are not included with these battery-powered products; IKEA’s LADDA battery range is one official option.
