Usually, yes: an intact two-prong plug designed for the receptacle can be used in a compatible, properly functioning three-slot outlet if it fits normally. But the appliance is not grounded by that outlet—the two-prong plug has no ground connection. Do not use a damaged plug, cord, or outlet, and stop if the receptacle is loose, hot, scorched, sparking, or its wiring is in doubt.
What happens when you plug it in?
The two blades connect the appliance to the circuit’s power conductors. The outlet’s third contact is not connected through a two-prong plug, so it cannot provide an equipment-ground connection to the appliance. A three-slot outlet does not make a two-prong appliance grounded.
For a U.S.-style household receptacle, use the plug only if it is made for that receptacle, fits without force, and both the plug and receptacle are in good condition. Follow the appliance maker’s instructions, including any limits for outdoor or wet locations, and applicable local electrical requirements.
Grounding and GFCI protection are different
Equipment grounding
An equipment-grounding conductor provides a path for fault current. A three-prong connection can connect compatible equipment to that path. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) says the third prong “reduces the risk of electric shock and protects equipment from electrical damage” in its Outlets: The Ins and Outs guidance.

GFCI protection
A ground-fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) detects an imbalance associated with leakage current and interrupts power. It can provide protection against certain shock hazards, but it does not add a grounding conductor to a two-prong cord. Grounding and GFCI protection work differently; one is not a substitute for the other. Check the plug and outlet before use
- Do not use a plug or cord that is cracked, frayed, scorched, or otherwise damaged.
- Do not use an outlet that is loose, hot, damaged, or sparking. ESFI advises replacing an outlet that no longer holds a plug; wiring concerns should be assessed by a qualified electrician. See ESFI’s adapter and outlet guidance and the CPSC Home Electrical Safety Checklist.
- Do not force a plug into a receptacle or bend, cut, or remove its prongs.
- Do not assume the outlet is correctly wired or grounded just because it has three slots. Its appearance alone does not establish wiring condition.
Do you need an adapter?
No adapter is needed for a two-prong plug that fits a compatible three-slot outlet. Do not confuse this with the reverse situation: connecting a three-prong appliance to an older two-slot receptacle. ESFI says three-prong adapters are not properly grounded and should not be used with three-prong appliances in its current adapter guidance. The CPSC checklist discusses a properly grounded adapter with its grounding wire or metal tab connected to the center screw of the outlet cover, but that depends on actual grounding and correct installation. An adapter is not a universal workaround; ask a qualified electrician about appropriate, code-compliant options for an older receptacle.

How to test a GFCI receptacle
ESFI recommends checking the GFCI’s operation with a small light or similar device:
- Press the receptacle’s RESET button.
- Plug in a nightlight or similar device and confirm it turns on.
- Press TEST and confirm the light turns off.
- Press RESET again and confirm power returns.
If the test/reset function does not work, ESFI says the GFCI should be replaced. The CPSC home wiring guide advises monthly testing. If you are unsure about the receptacle, wiring, or installation, consult a qualified electrician.
