GE Appliances advises discontinuing use and replacing the microwave in that situation. The guidance is specific to GE; check your own model’s manual or contact its manufacturer before deciding what to do.
First, identify where the coating is peeling
“Roof” can mean the ceiling inside the cooking cavity or the microwave’s exterior cabinet. GE’s guidance about peeling coating applies to surfaces inside the cavity, including under the turntable; it does not establish what to do about exterior paint damage.
If you are unsure which surface is damaged, or whether the loose material is paint or a separate component, stop using the microwave until you identify the part and check the model-specific instructions.
What to do about damage inside the cooking cavity
Active peeling or flaking
GE Appliances says: “If the coating is actively flaking or paint is peeling anywhere inside the oven cavity (including under the turntable) discontinue the use of the Microwave and replace it.” Follow your manufacturer’s instructions if you have another brand or model.

A small chip
GE distinguishes a minor chip from active peeling: “Minor chips to the surface coating on the microwave’s interior cavity will not affect the product’s performance.” GE also says it has no approved repair method for chips, burns, or scratches to the cavity coating. Do not assume that a touch-up product or repair is approved for your appliance; check its manual or ask the manufacturer using the model number.
Check whether the part is a waveguide cover
A thin cover near a side wall may be the waveguide cover, not cavity paint. Wolf describes this cover as protecting the opening through which microwaves enter the cavity and keeping moisture and food particles out of the appliance’s internal workings. For the Wolf models covered by its guidance, do not operate the microwave with a damaged or missing cover; consult the instructions for your specific model. Wolf: Waveguide cover guidance.

Use the manufacturer’s instructions—not generic repair advice
Manufacturer guidance can differ by brand and model. GE advises stopping use and replacing the microwave for active peeling inside the cavity, while its guidance treats minor chips differently and does not approve a coating repair. For a different make, check the owner’s manual or contact the manufacturer with the model number before using the appliance or attempting any repair.
Do not take the microwave apart to investigate or repair it. The cited guidance does not provide instructions for internal electrical repairs. For exterior cabinet paint damage, consult the manufacturer; the cavity-coating advice above does not determine whether that separate damage is safe.
