Check the label for the pest and location it covers, how to apply it, how much to use, ventilation requirements, and when people and pets may return. Never assume one product’s directions apply to another: the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns that pesticide misuse can be dangerous and says products must be used according to their labels. EPA guidance on pesticide safety and how to read pesticide labels explain those requirements.
Check whether the product is meant for your indoor use
Before spraying, read the current label—not just the front of the package. Confirm that it permits indoor use in the specific area you intend to treat and lists the pest you are addressing. Follow the stated application method, amount, precautions, ventilation instructions, and first-aid directions. If the label does not clearly allow the planned use, do not apply the product that way.
There is no universal safe re-entry time for indoor insecticides. The interval and other precautions depend on the product and application. Follow the label rather than borrowing directions from another spray or relying on a general rule. EPA’s label guidance explains why the label governs how a pesticide may be used.
Consider prevention and nonchemical controls first
If a nonchemical approach can address the pest, consider it before applying pesticide. EPA identifies nonchemical methods as an effective way to reduce pesticide risks where they are applicable. The right option depends on the pest and setting; a trap, for example, is not automatically suitable for every infestation. See EPA guidance on controlling pests at home.

Apply surface sprays only as directed
When a label permits an indoor surface spray, use it only when needed and in limited amounts. EPA’s general guidance recommends targeting limited areas, such as cracks, rather than spraying entire floors, walls, or ceilings. Do not extend a treatment beyond the sites or methods allowed by the product label. EPA’s pesticide-use precautions provide further guidance.
Prepare the room and protect people, pets, and food
- Clear the area: Remove children, pets, and toys before applying pesticide. Keep children and pets away until the product is dry, or for any longer or different interval the label specifies.
- Protect food and food-contact items: Remove or cover food during indoor applications, and follow label directions for surfaces, dishes, utensils, or other items that could contact food.
- Ventilate as directed: Follow the label’s ventilation instructions. EPA advises adequate ventilation and airing indoor areas after pesticide use.
These precautions are described in EPA’s general pesticide-safety guidance and its home pest-control guidance.

Do not apply fogger wait times to ordinary sprays
Total-release foggers have separate evacuation and re-entry precautions. EPA says people and pets must leave the treated space; its guidance says the label’s wait is usually two to four hours, followed by airing out the area. That example is specifically for foggers, not a general waiting rule for ordinary sprays. Always follow the product label. EPA warns, “Breathing spray mist may be harmful.” Read its safety precautions for total-release foggers.
If someone may have been exposed
Follow the product label’s first-aid instructions. In the United States, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 for poison emergencies. For urgent or severe symptoms, contact local emergency services. EPA includes these steps in its pesticide-safety guidance.

When the label does not answer your question
Precautions can vary with the product, pest, application method, health circumstances, and jurisdiction. If you cannot determine whether a product is appropriate for the intended indoor use or how to follow a precaution, do not guess: consult the current label and the relevant local poison-control or pesticide-information service. For persistent pest problems, EPA advises choosing a pest-control company carefully; its home pest-control guidance offers advice on that process.
