A published Make: project describes a pneumatic PVC water-balloon cannon, but its parts list and directions should not be treated as a safe build guide. Georg Fischer Harvel warns against using PVC or CPVC piping for compressed air or launching devices because a failure can scatter plastic fragments and cause severe injury or death. The safer choice is a water-balloon activity that does not use a homemade compressed-gas chamber.
What the published PVC cannon project describes
Jason Fabbri’s Make: project, “Build a PVC Water Balloon Cannon”, was published September 16, 2015, and updated July 15, 2022. It describes a pneumatic design with a barrel and a chamber, using compressed air to launch a water balloon.
The article lists PVC pipe, a PVC tee, two caps, a PVC ball check valve, PVC glue and an automotive tire valve stem. Those are the components identified by the tutorial, not a safe or recommended shopping list. The tutorial also includes pressure-related operating directions; its numerical suggestions are not validated safe limits and should not be followed as such.
Why a PVC compressed-air launcher is hazardous
In its PVC/CPVC Engineering and Installation Guide, Georg Fischer Harvel says it does not recommend its PVC or CPVC piping for testing, transporting or storing compressed air or gases. It explains that failure can release stored energy suddenly and propel plastic shards. In its section on launching devices, Harvel states: “Georg Fischer Harvel LLC does not recommend nor approve these or similar devices.” The guide warns that using plastic piping in such devices can cause severe bodily injury or death.

This is the key distinction: a tutorial showing how someone assembled and operated a device is not evidence that the materials are approved for that use. The manufacturer’s warning applies to the compressed-gas and launching-device use itself; choosing a pipe grade or repeating a pressure figure from a tutorial does not establish a safe operating pressure.
A separate technical discussion from Lu Laboratories likewise notes that PVC is not rated for compressed gases and that impact, aging and temperature changes can affect how it fails. It also cautions that fittings may not be pressure-rated. This is supporting context; Harvel’s guide is the relevant manufacturer warning for its products.

What to do instead
For a water-balloon game, use water balloons without building a homemade pneumatic launcher. If you want a launching toy, choose a commercially designed product and follow its manufacturer’s instructions; the sources cited here do not verify a particular alternative product. Water balloons are relevant supplies for the activity, but buying them does not make a PVC pressure chamber safe.
A similar compressed-air concept appears in VnutZ Domain’s water balloon cannon instructions, which describe PVC components and pressurizing with a bicycle pump or compressor. That is another unendorsed how-to, not a resolution of the manufacturer’s warning.
