No. For ordinary household use, do not plug one extension cord into another. Use a single, factory-assembled cord with the right length, electrical rating, and indoor or outdoor designation for the device and location. Extension cords are for temporary use, not a replacement for permanent wiring.
Why you should not connect extension cords
Connecting cords is not the recommended way to extend a cord’s reach. The Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) advises against it and recommends choosing one cord that meets or exceeds the device’s power requirements. Check the cord and appliance labels rather than assuming a cord is suitable because it looks heavy-duty.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) makes a related point in a workplace context: employers must follow the marked warnings and limitations on approved equipment. In a 2015 interpretation concerning cords with a warning against connecting cords, OSHA said that following the warning was necessary for the cord to be used in its intended application. That interpretation addresses workplace compliance; it is not a blanket statement of household law. Read OSHA’s interpretation.
Choose one cord suited to the device and setting
Before using a single extension cord, check these points:

- Capacity: The cord’s rating must meet or exceed the appliance’s requirements. Use the labels and appliance instructions to confirm compatibility.
- Length: Select a cord long enough to reach without joining it to another cord.
- Location: Use a cord marked for outdoor use when it will be used outdoors; do not use an indoor cord outside.
- Condition and construction: Use a cord with intact insulation and plugs, and follow the product’s instructions and safety markings. CPSC identifies characteristics such as wire size, strain relief, polarization, and continuity as relevant to household extension-cord safety; outdoor cords should have an appropriate jacket. Use extension cords temporarily
Extension cords are intended to bring an outlet’s supply to a portable corded device, not to serve as permanent wiring. Do not route them through walls, doorways, ceilings, or floors. Stop using a cord that is damaged or becomes hot; do not continue using it on the assumption that connecting it differently will solve the problem. ESFI advises having additional outlets installed if you regularly rely on extension cords.

What to do if you need more reach or outlets
For an occasional need
Replace the chain with one factory-assembled cord of sufficient length and appropriate rating for the device and location. Keep it in good condition and use it according to its markings and the appliance instructions.
For a recurring need
If a device regularly cannot reach an outlet, have an electrician assess whether a permanent receptacle should be installed where it is needed. That addresses the underlying outlet shortage rather than making a temporary cord setup permanent.

Never use a male-to-male cord
A male-to-male extension cord is a separate and severe hazard, not an alternative way to join cords. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) warned on March 31, 2026, that exposed prongs can become energized, creating electrocution or fire risks, and advised consumers to stop using these cords. Do not use one to connect a generator or backfeed a home. Read the CPSC warning.

Under its general-industry rule, employers must visually inspect portable cord-connected equipment and extension cords before use on any shift.
