No. Turn a portable space heater off before going to bed. The U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) advises switching it off when leaving a room or going to bed, and the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) says not to leave portable heaters running while people sleep. A thermostat, tip-over switch or other safety feature does not change that guidance.
Why overnight use is discouraged
A portable heater can ignite bedding, curtains, clothing, furniture or paper placed too close to it. Electrical misuse or a damaged cord can add fire risk. While asleep, people may not notice smoke, overheating or a developing problem quickly enough to respond. The recommendation is a practical precaution—not a claim that every heater left on will cause a fire.

The CPSC estimates that portable heaters, including electric space heaters, were involved in an average of 1,600 fires, 70 deaths and 150 injuries annually in the United States during 2020–2022. These are nationwide estimates for that period, not an individual user’s probability of a fire. See the CPSC’s January 23, 2026 winter-heating safety guidance.
Separately, USFA reports an estimated 32,200 U.S. home heating fires, 190 deaths, 625 injuries and $442 million in property loss in 2021. Those totals cover home heating fires broadly, not portable heaters alone. USFA also reports that portable heater fires accounted for 3% of home heating fires but 41% of fatal home heating fires annually during 2017–2019. The figures use different periods and classifications from the CPSC estimates, so they should not be combined. See USFA’s Heating Fire Safety guidance, last reviewed May 4, 2023.

How to use a portable heater more safely while awake
Turning a heater off for sleep is the key overnight rule. When it is in use, these precautions help reduce other fire and electrical hazards; they do not make it appropriate to leave on while sleeping.
- Keep a three-foot clear zone. Keep bedding, curtains, clothing, furniture, paper and other combustible materials at least 3 feet away on all sides.
- Plug an electric heater directly into a wall outlet. Do not use an extension cord or power strip, and do not run the heater cord under a rug or carpet.
- Set it on a stable, level surface. Keep it away from water and where it cannot easily be knocked over.
- Check the heater, cord and plug. Do not use damaged equipment. If the cord or plug becomes hot, disconnect the heater and contact an authorized repair person; if the outlet is hot, contact a certified electrician.
- Check for recalls. Look up the specific heater with the CPSC before using it.
These precautions are consistent with the CPSC portable-heater safety flyer and its 2026 guidance.

Electric heaters, fuel-burning heaters and carbon monoxide
Electric portable heaters present fire and electrical hazards but do not burn fuel. Carbon monoxide (CO) concerns apply particularly to fuel-burning heaters and heating systems: faulty installation, poor maintenance, incorrect venting or misuse can allow CO to build up. A CO alarm is an important warning layer, not a way to make unsafe heater use safe.

Set up and maintain smoke and CO alarms
CPSC recommends smoke alarms on every level of the home and inside each bedroom, and CO alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas. Consider interconnected alarms and battery backup so alarms can continue to work during a power outage. Test alarms monthly. These measures support early warning; they do not replace turning a portable heater off before sleep.
