Yes—eucalyptus can be good firewood if it is properly seasoned and suitable for your appliance. Check its moisture on a newly split face and aim for less than 20% before burning indoors. Eucalyptus covers many species, so no single drying time or heat-per-cord figure applies to all of it.

What makes eucalyptus suitable firewood?

Dryness matters more than the name on the woodpile. Eucalyptus species vary, and the available species-level evidence does not support treating every eucalyptus log as having the same density, drying behavior, or heat output.

A controlled fuelwood evaluation that included Eucalyptus melliodora and E. blakelyi found little difference among the tested species in oven-dry calorific value. It identified density and moisture as more important practical fuel properties, and only air-dry samples performed satisfactorily in its water-boiling tests. These findings support using dry eucalyptus, not a blanket claim about every species or modern stove. ACIAR’s fuelwood evaluation describes the study.

How to tell whether eucalyptus is dry enough

Use a firewood moisture meter and test the freshly split interior, not just the outside of the log. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends wood below 20% moisture for efficient burning and specifies checking a newly split side. Its 2020 guidance provides the target and checking method.

A dry-looking surface does not establish that the center is ready. If the meter reading is above 20%, continue seasoning the wood rather than relying on appearance or a promised delivery label.

How long does eucalyptus take to season?

There is no dependable universal seasoning time for eucalyptus. The EPA’s general firewood guidance recommends seasoning for at least six months, but this is not a eucalyptus-specific guarantee. Split size, airflow, stacking, weather, and climate all affect drying. Use the moisture reading—not the calendar—as the deciding check.

For better drying, split logs to expose more surface area and stack them outdoors off the ground with airflow around the pile. The EPA recommends covering only the top, leaving the sides open. General drying advice also emphasizes splitting and airflow; see EPA best practices and University of Minnesota Extension’s firewood guidance.

Does eucalyptus burn hot?

There is no well-supported universal heat-per-cord value for eucalyptus as a whole. At equal moisture content, most wood species contain approximately similar energy per pound; denser wood generally provides more heat per cord because a cord contains more wood mass. Iowa State University Extension gives 7,000 Btu per pound for firewood at 20% moisture or air-seasoned for at least a year. That is a general firewood figure, not a eucalyptus-specific rating. See Iowa State Extension’s firewood explanation.

When comparing a eucalyptus supply with another type of firewood, consider the measured moisture, species and density, and how much usable wood fits in the delivered stack. A species label alone is not a reliable heat comparison.

What about green eucalyptus?

Green wood is wet wood: some of its energy goes toward evaporating water instead of heating the room. Wet wood also produces more smoke and contributes to creosote buildup in the chimney. The Firewood Association of Australia gives mature River Red Gum (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) a green moisture content of around 40–50%; that figure applies to this species, not all eucalyptus or seasoned firewood. See the association’s River Red Gum firewood factsheet.

Burn eucalyptus safely in a stove or fireplace

  • Follow the appliance manual, including any restrictions on fuel type and log size.
  • Burn dry wood and operate the appliance as instructed; wet wood can increase smoke and creosote buildup.
  • Maintain and inspect the chimney or flue regularly. Creosote deposits can contribute to chimney fires.
  • Do not burn painted, treated, glued, moldy, or otherwise contaminated wood.
  • Check local air-quality restrictions and, where possible, buy and burn locally cut firewood to reduce the risk of moving invasive forest pests.

These are general wood-burning precautions, not evidence of a eucalyptus-specific indoor toxicity. Wood smoke itself contains harmful particulate pollution. The EPA’s best-practice guidance discusses dry wood, appliance operation, chimney maintenance, and local firewood sourcing; its Burn Wise program is historical, with updates ending October 30, 2025.
