Yes—birch can be good firewood when it is properly seasoned. Its usefulness depends less on the name of the tree than on whether the wood is dry, how it is stored, and how it is burned. Alaska’s Department of Environmental Conservation lists seasoned birch at 23.6 MMBtu per cord, a regional comparison figure rather than a guarantee for every birch species, stack, or stove. For a reliable burn, split the wood, store it with airflow, and check its moisture: the EPA’s target for properly dried firewood is 20% or less.

How much heat does birch firewood provide?

Alaska’s Department of Environmental Conservation lists seasoned birch at 23.6 MMBtu per cord. The agency’s source does not state a publication year. Treat this as an Alaska comparison, not a universal heat value: species, moisture, and how much solid wood is in a cord affect the result. Alaska DEC firewood heat values.

A different measure comes from a USDA Forest Service table: dry paper birch is listed at 8,019 to 8,650 Btu per pound; the publication year is not stated in the surfaced table. This is energy per unit of dry wood mass, not the usable heat from a household cord or a particular appliance. Do not compare it directly with a cord figure. USDA Forest Service wood heating values.

When comparing birch with another firewood, match the basis of comparison: cord figures to cord figures with similar volume and moisture assumptions, or dry-mass values to dry-mass values. Density varies by species and among trees, and the preparation, local supply, and delivered dryness affect practical value. A quoted price alone does not establish how much dry wood you are getting. The cited figures do not support a blanket claim that birch always outperforms oak, maple, or other woods.

Why dryness matters more than the species name

Wet wood wastes heat and produces excessive smoke, according to the EPA. Properly dried firewood should read 20% moisture or less. Measure with a moisture meter on a freshly split face, following the meter’s instructions; a reading from the outside of an unsplit piece may not represent its interior. EPA guidance on wood-burning appliance efficiency and EPA moisture guidance.

Calendar time is only a guide. Alaska forestry guidance describes green paper birch as having about 80% moisture and air-dry wood as roughly 12% to 20%; those are Alaska-specific figures, not a promise that a particular log will be ready on schedule. The same guidance recommends a year of covered seasoning with good circulation. Check the wood itself before burning. Alaska Division of Forestry firewood guidance.

How to season birch firewood

  1. Split it into manageable pieces. Exposing more surface to air speeds drying. The EPA advises splitting pieces to 6 inches in diameter or smaller for faster drying. Alaska forestry guidance also notes that split wood dries faster and burns more evenly.
  2. Stack it off the ground. Keep the pile stable and allow air to circulate through it. The EPA advises stacking split-side down.
  3. Cover the top, not the sides. Limit rain and snow while leaving the stack open to airflow. Avoid wrapping or enclosing the pile in a way that traps moisture.
  4. Allow adequate time, then measure. The EPA advises storing hardwood for at least 12 months; Alaska’s forestry guidance recommends one year under cover with good circulation. Local weather, log size, and storage conditions can change drying time, so confirm readiness with a moisture check.

Burning birch safely and cleanly

Burn only dry, seasoned birch in an appliance designed for wood, and follow its manual and local air-quality rules. The EPA recommends hot fires and advises against burning wet or green wood, trash, plastic, or pressure-treated wood. EPA best wood-burning practices.

If smoke continues after you have burned dry wood and opened the damper to establish a full fire, the EPA’s Burn Wise guidance recommends contacting a chimney-safety or fireplace professional. When possible, buy and burn locally cut firewood to reduce the risk of transporting invasive forest pests. Transport requirements differ by jurisdiction. For example, Maine’s Forest Service says seasoning and removing bark do not guarantee firewood is pest-free and are not approved pest treatments under its rules; do not assume Maine’s requirements apply elsewhere. What to check when buying birch

  • Ask what birch species is being sold and whether the wood has been split and seasoned.
  • Ask how it was stored and whether it can be checked with a moisture meter.
  • Compare the amount of wood delivered and its dryness, not just the quoted price.
  • Check local rules before transporting firewood across areas or jurisdictions.

These checks help assess a specific load; the available figures do not establish current prices or supplier availability.
