Yes—but the headline needs context. Apple announced robot-vacuum support for Apple Home as part of iOS 18 in June 2024. Reports from the iOS 18.3 beta later revealed that Apple was still implementing or exposing the feature, which is why iOS 18.3 received much of the attention. The support is for compatible Matter-enabled robot vacuums, not every Wi-Fi model with an iPhone app.
Why iOS 18.3 was linked to robot vacuums
Apple’s original announcement came on June 10, 2024, when it described robot-vacuum support as one of the upgrades coming to the Home experience in iOS 18. Apple said compatible vacuums would be able to provide core controls through Home and Siri, including power, cleaning modes, vacuuming, mopping and charge status. They could also participate in scenes and automations.

When iOS 18 became generally available on September 16, 2024, the feature was not clearly available to all users. In late 2024 and early 2025, analysis of the iOS 18.3 beta found code and user-facing strings related to robot vacuums. The early beta reporting also cautioned that the feature was not yet live. That made iOS 18.3 look like a new feature release, although the more accurate description is that Apple was completing or exposing a capability already announced for iOS 18.
iOS 18.3 was released on January 27, 2025. Secondary coverage described robot-vacuum support as part of the Home update, but Apple’s official iOS 18.3 release notes do not provide a prominent, detailed robot-vacuum section. It is therefore better to describe the story as a delayed rollout or implementation milestone than as a major feature formally introduced in the release notes.

Is this HomeKit or Matter?
The important technical detail is Matter. Apple’s Home platform supports Matter accessories, and Apple identifies robot vacuum cleaners as a supported Matter device category. A vacuum must support the required Matter functionality and be certified or updated by its manufacturer before it can be added properly to Apple Home.

A model that works only through a manufacturer’s cloud service, Alexa integration, Google Home integration or an iPhone app is not necessarily a Matter accessory.
Apple’s Works with Apple Home guidance and Matter documentation explain the distinction. Matter improves interoperability between smart-home ecosystems, but it does not guarantee that every brand exposes the same controls in every platform.
What Apple Home can control
For a compatible robot vacuum, Apple Home may provide the controls supported by both the device and its Matter implementation. These can include:
- Starting or stopping cleaning.
- Selecting supported cleaning modes.
- Choosing vacuuming, mopping or related supported functions.
- Checking charging or cleaning status.
- Adding the vacuum to scenes.
- Using automations, such as starting cleaning after everyone leaves home.
- Using Siri to start cleaning or, where supported, clean a particular room.
Apple’s current Home app page gives examples such as starting a vacuum when leaving for work and asking Siri to clean a specific room. Room-specific commands depend on the vacuum’s implementation, its room configuration and the availability of the feature in the relevant language and region.
Apple Home should be viewed as a convenient control and automation layer, not necessarily as a replacement for the vacuum’s own app.

What may still require the manufacturer’s app
Apple’s stated support covers core functionality. It does not promise that Home will expose every feature found in a manufacturer’s application. You may still need the vendor app for:
- Initial setup or Matter activation.
- Firmware updates.
- Detailed maps and multi-floor map management.
- No-go zones and virtual boundaries.
- Room naming and advanced room configuration.
- Suction, water-flow and mop settings.
- Mop-lift and obstacle-avoidance options.
- Cleaning schedules and advanced routines.
- Maintenance alerts and consumable replacement information.
- Technical troubleshooting.
The Roomba Home, Roborock and ECOVACS Home listings describe mapping, room selection, schedules and cleaning customisation that go beyond Apple’s basic Home controls.
Which robot vacuums work?
Compatibility is model-specific and firmware-specific, not brand-wide. It is not accurate to say that every Roomba, Roborock, DEEBOT or other Wi-Fi robot vacuum works with Apple Home.
Before buying or attempting setup, verify all of the following:
- The exact model number. A manufacturer may support Matter on newer products but not on its entire range.
- Matter or Apple Home support. Look for confirmation from Apple or the manufacturer, not merely an iPhone app or generic smart-home branding.
- The required firmware. A compatible vacuum may need an update before a Matter pairing option appears.
- Regional availability. Features can vary by country, language and hardware configuration.
- Supported functions. Confirm whether the model supports only basic cleaning control or also room-specific commands and other features.
Apple’s developer guidance says manufacturers must complete the relevant Matter certification for supported product categories, including robot vacuum cleaners. The available documentation does not establish a complete model-by-model compatibility list for every major brand, so buyers should check the exact product documentation before purchasing.
What you need to use the feature
The general requirements are:
- An iPhone or iPad running a compatible release. Apple’s current badge guidance specifies iOS 18 or later or iPadOS 18 or later for pairing and local control of a Matter accessory.
- A robot vacuum with the required Matter support.
- The vacuum’s Matter QR code, numeric setup code or supported manufacturer pairing flow.
- A compatible home network. Wi-Fi and Thread requirements vary by accessory.
- A properly configured Apple home hub—such as a HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV—for automations, notifications and remote access.
- Current firmware for the vacuum and Apple Home devices.
Local pairing and control are different from remote access. Apple says a home hub is required for automations, notifications and controlling accessories while away from home. Thread-based accessories may also require a Thread-capable home hub or compatible Thread border router.
Apple’s accessory setup guide explains that Matter pairing may involve scanning a QR code or entering a setup code.

General setup process
The exact procedure varies by manufacturer, but the usual process is:
- Update the iPhone, Apple Home devices and vacuum firmware.
- Confirm that the exact vacuum model supports Matter and Apple Home.
- Open the manufacturer’s app if it is required to enable Matter or create a pairing code.
- Open the Home app and tap Add Accessory.
- Scan the Matter QR code or enter the supplied setup code.
- Assign the vacuum to a room and give it a clear name, such as “Downstairs Vacuum.”
- Test the available controls in Home.
- Create a scene or automation and test it while you are at home.
- Try Siri using the vacuum’s exact name and the configured room name.
The expected result is an accessory tile in Home showing only the functions supported by that vacuum and its Matter implementation. Seeing fewer controls than in the manufacturer’s app is normal.
Troubleshooting failed pairing
- The vacuum works in its own app but is missing from Home: confirm that it is genuinely Matter-enabled. Vendor-app connectivity alone is insufficient.
- No Matter option appears: update the vacuum, then check the manufacturer’s app for a Matter, Apple Home or smart-home integration setting.
- Pairing fails: check the intended Wi-Fi network, setup code and any Thread border-router requirement.
- The accessory appears but controls are limited: this usually reflects the functions exposed by the model’s Matter implementation.
- Siri cannot clean a named room: check the vacuum’s room configuration, accessory name, language and regional support.
- Remote control or automations fail: verify that a functioning Apple home hub is installed and connected.
Remove a failed partial pairing before trying again. Reset the vacuum only as a last resort, because a reset or firmware operation may erase maps, schedules and device settings. Keep the manufacturer’s app available for features Apple Home does not provide.
Should you buy a new vacuum for Apple Home?
Only if Apple Home integration is a specific priority and the exact model has confirmed Matter support. Do not buy a vacuum solely because its brand has an iPhone app, supports Siri Shortcuts, works with Alexa or advertises general smart-home compatibility.

For example, a vacuum could be included in a leaving-home scene or scheduled to clean after occupants depart. The trade-off is that detailed maps, cleaning customisation and maintenance tools will often remain in the manufacturer’s app.
The same distinction applies to brands such as Roomba, Roborock, ECOVACS and SwitchBot: their apps may offer extensive controls, but brand-level app support does not prove Apple Home compatibility for every model. Check the model, firmware, Matter certification and regional availability before purchasing.
The accurate bottom line
“iOS 18.3 added robot-vacuum support” is understandable shorthand, but it is not the most precise version of the story. Apple announced the capability for iOS 18 in June 2024, and iOS 18.3 beta evidence suggested that the delayed Matter-based Home integration was being completed or made visible. The resulting feature applies to compatible Matter-enabled robot vacuums only, offers core Home and Siri controls, and does not eliminate the need for a manufacturer app.
