Complete the digital setup near your router before drilling. After mounting, verify the final viewing angle, Wi‐Fi connection, motion alerts, power, and night performance.
The exact setup button, bracket, power requirements, Wi‐Fi bands, and mounting hardware vary by model. Identify your camera first and keep its model-specific Ring instructions available.

Before you start: identify the exact Ring camera
“Ring camera” does not describe one installation method. Your device may be an indoor plug-in camera, battery outdoor camera, solar-compatible model, plug-in camera, wired camera, PoE model, Spotlight Cam, or Floodlight Cam. These products do not all use the same bracket, power supply, setup button, or installation procedure.
Ring’s current documentation calls the Stick Up Cam (3rd Gen) the Outdoor Cam. If your packaging or older guide uses the Stick Up Cam name, use the current Outdoor Cam installation guide for that model.
#1 Best Overall

What you need
Equipment and tools
- Ring camera and its compatible battery, adapter, solar panel, hardwired kit, or PoE equipment.
- Smartphone or tablet with the Ring app.
- Your home Wi‐Fi name and password.
- Included mounting plate, bracket, screws, anchors, cable clips, and security screws.
- Phillips-head screwdriver.
- For applicable Outdoor Cam masonry installations: a drill and 0.24-inch (6-mm) bit.
Do not replace the supplied power adapter with a generic unit just because the connector fits. Voltage, wattage, connector type, and power-mode compatibility are model-specific. Ring’s power guidance gives examples such as 5 VDC/12.5 W for certain Outdoor Cam models and 9 VDC/18 W for some Spotlight models; those figures are not universal Ring-camera requirements. Check the power requirements for your exact camera.
Electrical safety
Battery and ordinary plug-in mounting are usually suitable DIY projects. Floodlight, wired, and mains-powered installations are different. Turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse box before handling mains wiring. Use a qualified electrician when working with line voltage, climbing to an unsafe height, routing cable through walls, or where local law requires permits or professional installation. Ring notes that local regulations may require professional work or permits.
Step 1: charge or power the camera
Battery and solar models
- Remove the battery if your camera uses a removable pack.
- Charge it with the supplied cable until the indicator shows a full charge.
- Insert the battery until it clicks securely into place.
- Keep the camera accessible during setup in case the battery must be reseated.
Fully charge a battery camera before setup, even if you plan to add a solar panel later. Solar reduces manual charging but does not provide unlimited power: shade, season, weather, motion volume, nighttime lighting, temperature, and battery condition all affect performance.

Plug-in and wired models
Use the included or explicitly compatible Ring power supply. For hardwired-only cameras, follow the in-app and model manual instructions before applying power. Never assume a battery model can be converted to hardwired operation without confirming compatibility.
Step 2: install and prepare the Ring app
- Install the Ring app from the appropriate iOS or Android app store.
- Update the app and your phone’s operating system if updates are available.
- Sign in or create a Ring account.
- Allow requested permissions, including camera, location, and Wi‐Fi-related setup permissions where prompted.
- Make sure your phone can connect to your home Wi‐Fi and have the password ready.
Ring products require an existing home Wi‐Fi network, a mobile device, and the Ring app. This is not a general Bluetooth-pairing process: Ring’s FAQ says its products do not support Bluetooth as a general product feature.

Step 3: add the camera in the Ring app
- Open the Ring app dashboard.
- Tap Set Up a Device.
- Choose the relevant security-camera category.
- Select an existing location or create one.
- Scan the camera’s QR code.
- Name the camera clearly, such as “Driveway,” “Back Patio,” or “Nursery.”
- Follow the preparation instructions for your model.
The QR code may be beneath a removable faceplate or battery cover, on the packaging, or in the setup guide. If scanning fails, use the manual or non-Ring-device setup option offered in the app. Ring’s setup troubleshooting guide covers additional QR-code recovery steps.
Step 4: put the camera into setup mode
- Press the camera’s setup button when the app prompts you.
- Wait for the status light to flash or for the camera to provide its setup indication.
- Confirm the setup prompt in the app.
- Keep the phone close to the camera.
The setup button may be inside a removable cover, on the bottom, or on top, depending on the device. Do not assume its location from another Ring model.
Step 5: connect to Ring’s temporary Wi‐Fi network
During setup, the camera creates a temporary Ring network so the app can configure it.
- iPhone: tap Join when prompted to connect to the temporary Ring Wi‐Fi network.
- Android: allow the app to connect automatically. If that fails, open the phone’s Wi‐Fi settings and select the Ring or Ring Setup network manually, then return to the Ring app.
If the temporary network does not appear, confirm that the camera has power, press the setup button again, move the phone closer, and try another phone before power-cycling or resetting the camera.
Step 6: connect the camera to your home Wi‐Fi
- Select the correct home network from the list.
- Enter the Wi‐Fi password carefully.
- Keep the phone and camera close together while the connection is established.
- Wait for the camera’s light pattern or audio confirmation.
- Allow the firmware update to finish.
Do not remove power or press the setup button during a firmware update. The app screens and available choices vary by model, phone, region, and app version.

Ring says all its devices support 2.4-GHz Wi‐Fi, while only some support 5 GHz. If the network does not appear, 2.4 GHz is the safest fallback. Separate 2.4-GHz and 5-GHz network names can make troubleshooting easier.
In Canada, Europe, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and Japan, Ring identifies restrictions affecting certain 5-GHz channels and recommends channels 100–165 where a router permits manual selection. This is a region-specific recommendation, not a universal requirement.
Step 7: choose the mounting position before drilling
Set up the camera temporarily near the router, then test it from the intended final position before permanently mounting it. A camera can connect successfully beside the router and still have an unreliable connection on an exterior wall.
Positioning checklist
- Aim across the approach path so people move through the frame rather than directly toward the camera.
- Keep faces, vehicles, and packages within a useful distance and angle.
- Avoid direct sunlight, reflective surfaces, headlights, and large areas of bare sky.
- Check for obstructions such as eaves, branches, walls, railings, and glass.
- Leave clearance to remove a battery or reach a power connection.
- Protect outdoor cable connections from water, pulling, and sharp edges.
- For indoor cameras, preserve access to any privacy cover and avoid views into private areas.
- Respect household privacy and avoid unnecessarily recording neighboring property or public spaces.
For Spotlight Cam Plus and Spotlight Cam Pro, Ring recommends approximately 8–10 feet (2.5–3 meters) above ground for optimal motion detection. Treat that as a model-specific recommendation, not a universal height for every Ring camera.
Step 8: mount the camera
Wood and drywall
For the current Outdoor Cam installation, drive the mounting screws into wood as directed. For drywall or other surfaces where the screw cannot reach a structural point, use suitable anchors. Keep the mounting plate’s UP arrow correctly oriented.

- Versatile mounting options – Find the perfect angle on a table, or mount up high with the flexible swivel mount. Indoor Cam is plug-in, making it easy to move where you need it.
Brick, concrete, or stucco
- Hold the mounting plate in position and mark the holes.
- Drill the marked holes with the applicable 6-mm masonry bit.
- Insert the included wall anchors.
- Drive the screws through the plate and into the anchors.
- Attach the camera and confirm that the bracket is secure.
Use the instructions for your exact model when mounting to masonry, ceilings, or eaves. For an eave or ceiling installation, orient the plate and camera toward the monitored area rather than copying a wall-mounted angle.
Flat surfaces
If your camera includes a shelf or table base, place it on a stable surface, route the cable safely, and check that vibration or accidental contact cannot change the view. A table-mounted camera is easier to move and charge but is generally more exposed to tampering.
Security screws and covers
Install supplied bracket and battery-compartment security screws where instructed. Do not install a screw in a way that prevents battery removal. Retain rubber plugs and reinstall them in the locations specified by the manual.
Step 9: connect the power accessory
Plug-in cameras
- Connect the correct indoor or outdoor adapter for the model.
- Seat the connector fully.
- Use supplied cable clips where provided.
- Prevent the cable from hanging, pulling, rubbing, or crossing a sharp edge.
- For outdoor installations, follow the manual’s instructions for weather protection and connector placement.
Solar cameras
Mount the compatible Ring solar panel where it receives reliable direct sunlight, then connect it as directed. Shade, dirt, snow, seasonal sun changes, and camera activity can all reduce charging. Solar is a maintenance-reducing option, not a guarantee that the battery will never need attention.

Step 11: test the completed installation
- Open Live View promptly from the camera’s final location.
- Walk through the intended motion zone and confirm an alert arrives.
- Confirm that the image covers the required area without excessive glare or obstruction.
- Test night vision and any spotlight or floodlight behavior after dark.
- Test two-way audio if your model supports it.
- Check battery or power status in Device Health.
- Confirm the camera does not reboot when infrared, lighting, or the siren activates.
- Verify shared-user permissions and notifications.
- Verify recording if you have an eligible plan.
- Recheck the connection after the camera has remained at its final position, not only during setup beside the router.
Troubleshooting common setup problems
| Problem | First checks | Escalation |
|---|---|---|
| QR code will not scan | Improve lighting, clean the code area, move the phone farther away, check beneath covers, and try the manual setup route. | Confirm the code belongs to this camera, then power-cycle or reset it if repeated attempts fail. |
| Temporary Ring Wi‐Fi is absent | Confirm power, press the setup button again, move closer, and manually select Ring or Ring Setup in phone Wi‐Fi settings. | Try another phone, then power-cycle or factory-reset according to the model instructions. |
| Home Wi‐Fi does not appear | Move the camera near the router, try 2.4 GHz, confirm the SSID is not hidden, and check unusual SSID characters. | Check model band compatibility, router topology, and region-specific 5-GHz channel restrictions. |
| Wi‐Fi connects but internet setup fails | Test internet access on the same phone and network. Check firewall and network restrictions. | Investigate multiple-router or bridge-mode configuration with your ISP or router manufacturer. Do not leave security disabled permanently. |
| Camera works near router but not when mounted | Check Device Health, reduce obstructions, and test the final location again. | Move the camera or router, or add a compatible mesh node or Chime Pro if coverage—not internet speed—is the problem. |
| Battery drains quickly | Check weak Wi‐Fi, high motion traffic, frequent Live View, cold weather, nighttime lighting, solar shade, and battery condition. | Confirm the correct power mode; battery- or solar-only devices should use Battery Mode where applicable. Review the battery or accessory if the problem continues. |
| Alerts miss activity | Reposition for cross-frame movement, widen or reposition zones, check phone permissions, and review Modes and schedules. | Confirm smart-alert eligibility, then reposition the camera or contact Ring support. |
Ring’s setup troubleshooting guide covers QR, Wi‐Fi, router, reset, and connection failures. Its power-mode guidance covers model-specific power and battery behavior.
Which power type is right for your installation?
| Power type | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Battery | Renters, simple DIY mounts, and locations without an outlet. | Requires periodic charging; motion volume, weak Wi‐Fi, cold weather, and lighting can shorten runtime. |
| Plug-in | Fixed indoor or outdoor locations near a suitable outlet. | Cable routing, outlet placement, and outdoor weather protection constrain placement. |
| Solar | Outdoor locations with dependable direct sunlight. | Shade, season, weather, orientation, and activity affect charging. |
| Wired | Permanent installations and high-activity locations. | Requires electrical safety, correct compatibility, and possibly an electrician. |
| PoE | Structured networks with compatible Ring hardware and Ethernet cabling. | More complex networking and power requirements than battery or ordinary plug-in installation. |
A battery camera is a poor fit for a high-traffic location that is difficult to access. Solar is a poor fit for a shaded wall. A Floodlight Cam is a poor fit without suitable electrical power unless you plan professional wiring. Choose the power system based on the location and maintenance you can realistically support.

Do you need a Ring Protect plan?
A subscription is not generally required to complete setup or use basic Live View. A Ring Home plan can affect saved video, video history, smart alerts, extended Live View, Modes, and other features. Exact availability depends on the camera, plan, geography, and current Ring terms.
As listed on Ring’s U.S. plan page around August 16, 2026, Ring Solo was $4.99 per month or $49.99 per year for one home camera or doorbell; Ring Multi was $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year for devices at one location; and Ring Pro was $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year. Prices, features, promotions, taxes, and availability can change. Check Ring’s current plan page before subscribing.
If you only want occasional live viewing and do not need cloud event history or smart alerts, you may not need a plan. If local storage, offline operation, continuous recording, or an existing non-Ring smart-home ecosystem is your priority, compare other camera types before committing. Continuous recording is not available on every Ring camera; Ring identifies particular compatible cameras and power configurations.
