Where is Necker Island?
Necker Island lies in the North Sound of the British Virgin Islands in the eastern Caribbean. Virgin Limited Edition places it east of Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands. The operator lists the island’s area as 74 acres; its property page does not state a publication year (accessed 2026).
The official pages describe lodging and booking options, but do not establish a general public-entry or day-tour program. Necker is presented as a private resort property for booked guests.
How did Richard Branson come to own it?
Virgin’s corporate timeline records that Richard Branson purchased Necker Island in 1978 and that it later became his family home. Separately, Virgin Limited Edition’s history says the collection launched in 2000 with Necker among its initial properties. The purchase and the hospitality collection’s launch are distinct milestones.

Branson has also offered a personal account of why he bought the island. In a first-person Virgin blog post referring to his wife Joan, the Virgin Group founder wrote: “She was also the inspiration behind Necker Island, which I originally bought in an effort to impress her!” That is Branson’s stated recollection of his motive.
How can you stay on Necker Island?
Virgin Limited Edition offers two booking formats. Exclusive use is available at any time of year, while individual rooms or several rooms in a private Balinese house are offered on selected dates. Minimum stays may apply. Use the operator’s booking engine to check current availability and rates.

As checked on October 8, 2026, the individual-stays page listed October 20–27 and November 18–29, 2026, with the November listing marked check-out only, as well as selected dates from January through December 2027. These listings can change; confirm directly before making travel plans.
How many guests can the island accommodate?
Virgin Limited Edition describes the standard arrangement as sleeping up to 48 guests across eleven Great House bedrooms and ten individual Bali Houses. For larger celebrations, it says four additional bedrooms and a bunkroom can be booked, extending capacity to 56 guests plus 14 children across two bunkrooms. Its FAQ describes the larger arrangement as 56 adults and 14 children. These are operator-stated capacities, not independent measurements.

The operator calls Necker Island all-inclusive. Its FAQ says the rate includes meals, drinks, a speedboat transfer from Beef Island and most on-island activities. “All-inclusive” does not cover every experience or purchase.

Activities described by Virgin Limited Edition include hiking, paddleboarding, wildlife encounters, tennis, padel, pickleball, yoga and water sports. The operator’s general inclusion statement is “most” activities, so check whether a specific activity is included or separately charged; availability and fees can change.

The operator identifies Beef Island in Tortola (EIS) as the closest international airport. Its described transfer involves a short drive from the airport to a dock, followed by a 30-minute speedboat trip. Virgin Gorda (VIJ) is also named as an airport option via regional connections. Flight routes and transfer arrangements can vary, so verify both for your dates with the operator and airline.

What to check before booking
