An index is a rules-based representation of a defined market or strategy. Its methodology determines which securities qualify, how they are weighted, and when weights or membership change. Those choices shape what the index actually represents: the label alone does not tell you its exposures.

This guide focuses on equity indexes and explains the main weighting approaches, the difference between rebalancing and reconstitution, and how to assess concentration. The specific rules and schedules vary by index, so consult the provider’s methodology for the index and version you are considering.

What does an index methodology determine?

An index methodology is the rulebook for constructing and maintaining an index. S&P Dow Jones Indices describes its methodology as the rules governing index construction. In practice, the rules answer four separate questions:

  • Target: What market, segment, or investment strategy is the index intended to represent?
  • Eligibility: Which securities meet its inclusion rules, such as requirements related to market, listing, liquidity, or other screens?
  • Weighting: How much influence does each eligible security have on the index?
  • Maintenance: When are weights adjusted, membership reviewed, and corporate actions handled?

These are distinct design choices. Two indexes with similar names or overlapping constituents can have different exposures because their eligibility, weighting, or maintenance rules differ. CFA Institute’s 2026 “Security Market Indexes” reading notes that construction choices—especially the weighting method—affect index valuation and returns.

How do equity indexes assign weights?

A constituent’s weight determines how strongly its price movement affects the index, subject to the index’s calculation rules. Weighting is not a neutral label: a method can emphasize company size, share price, an accounting measure, or a selected factor.

Weighting method Basic rule What it means for exposure and maintenance
Float-adjusted market capitalization Weight follows each company’s eligible, float-adjusted market value relative to the total eligible index value. Larger eligible companies generally have larger weights. Relative price changes move weights naturally; share counts, investable float, eligibility, membership, and corporate actions may also require index maintenance.
Equal weight Each constituent receives the same target weight at a specified reference or rebalance date. The largest constituents have less weight at the reset than under capitalization weighting, while smaller members have more. Price changes cause weights to drift until a later reset.
Price weight Relative influence is based on share price, as specified by the index’s calculation rules. A stock’s share price, rather than its company-wide market value, determines its relative influence. Splits and other corporate actions require calculation adjustments to preserve index continuity.
Fundamental weight Weights use a defined accounting or other fundamental measure, such as sales, earnings, or dividends. The selected measure, data source, and treatment of that data matter. “Fundamental weighting” is not one uniform formula.
Factor weight or tilt A factor screen, score, or exposure determines or adjusts constituent weights. The resulting index can have exposures beyond its named target. The precise screens, scoring, and weighting rules determine those exposures.
Capped market capitalization Capitalization-based weights are adjusted using a specified cap procedure. The cap constrains individual weights under the methodology. The cap level, redistribution method, and timing of adjustments are index-specific.

Market capitalization weighting

Most S&P Dow Jones Indices equity indexes use float-adjusted market capitalization weighting. “Float-adjusted” means the weighting calculation uses the portion of a company’s shares considered available to investors under the provider’s rules, rather than automatically treating every issued share as investable. The methodology governs how float, shares, eligibility, and corporate actions are handled.

Because weights reflect relative market values, a company whose eligible market value grows relative to other constituents generally takes a larger share of the index. This approach does not keep each constituent at a fixed target weight.

Equal weighting

An equal-weight index gives each constituent the same target weight at its scheduled reset. For example, S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index as resetting constituents to equal weights quarterly; its approximate 0.2% target per constituent applies at the rebalance reference point for an index of 500 constituents, not throughout the period between resets.

After a reset, market movements change the constituents’ relative weights. Returning to the targets requires the index to reset them on its schedule. Equal weighting therefore changes exposure relative to capitalization weighting; it does not guarantee higher returns, lower risk, or better diversification in every sense.

Other rules-based approaches

Price-weighted, fundamental, factor-based, and capped indexes each apply their own rule to determine influence. A label is only a starting point: to understand the actual exposure, inspect the metric used, the data treatment, any caps or screens, and how often the rules are applied.

What is the difference between rebalancing and reconstitution?

Rebalancing changes weights

Rebalancing updates constituent weights to restore or implement the index’s weighting rule. In an equal-weight design, it restores equal targets after market movements have caused weights to drift. In a capitalization-weighted design, ordinary relative price changes move weights with market values; the index does not need to trade simply to restore fixed equal targets. Changes in shares, float, or other methodology inputs can still lead to maintenance.

Reconstitution changes membership

Reconstitution changes which securities are included so the index continues to represent its target market or selection rules. It can also change weights when members are added or removed. CFA Institute’s 2026 reading distinguishes periodic rebalancing, which maintains appropriate weightings, from reconstitution, which maintains representation of the desired target market. It also notes that reconstitution can affect prices of current and prospective constituents.

Both processes can create turnover. When a provider announces a review, check whether it is changing weights, constituents, or both; also distinguish the date used to determine changes from the date those changes take effect.

How often does an index rebalance?

There is no universal schedule. S&P Dow Jones Indices lists March, June, September, and December as quarterly rebalancing months for the S&P 500, and describes quarterly resets for the S&P 500 Equal Weight Index. These are index-specific examples, not a schedule that applies to every index.

For another index, consult the provider’s current methodology and review notices. A scheduled review may involve a weight adjustment, a membership change, or both; the word “review” by itself does not establish that all constituents will be rebalanced.

What does concentration tell you?

Concentration describes how much index weight is held by a small number of constituents, sectors, or other groupings. A capitalization-weighted index can place substantial weight in the largest companies when their eligible float-adjusted market values are large. Equal weighting starts with equal constituent targets at the reset, while a capped approach limits individual weights according to its rules.

Concentration is time-sensitive: prices move after a rebalance, so actual weights can diverge from their reset values. A useful numerical comparison should identify the index, the metric—such as the combined weight of its ten largest constituents—the data date, and the provider or file used. Without those details, a concentration figure can be stale or misleading. A lower weight in the largest companies does not by itself establish lower overall volatility or better returns; weighting changes other exposures too.

How can weighting change other exposures?

A weighting rule affects more than the share assigned to the largest names. MSCI research on weighting schemes found that different methods can alter target-factor exposure, unintended factor exposure, concentration, and investability. In the schemes examined, equal and inverse-volatility weighting also created size and low-volatility exposures. Those findings illustrate a general mechanism; they are not current holdings data or a performance forecast.

When comparing indexes, consider the target exposure alongside top-constituent concentration, turnover and reset frequency, sensitivity to price and membership changes, eligibility or liquidity constraints, and investability or tracking implications. No weighting approach is a free diversification improvement: the effects depend on its rules and the index’s constituents.

How to read an index methodology

  1. Confirm the target. Identify the market or strategy the index is intended to represent and the eligible universe it starts from.
  2. Check inclusion rules. Look for security eligibility, screens, float or liquidity requirements, and how additions and removals are decided.
  3. Find the weighting formula. Determine whether weights use float-adjusted market value, equal targets, share price, fundamentals, factor scores, or a capped formula. For caps, check the level and redistribution procedure.
  4. Separate maintenance events. Note which rules govern weight changes and which govern constituent selection. Record review, reference, and effective dates separately.
  5. Review calculation and corporate-action rules. Index providers use calculation adjustments to maintain continuity when non-market events affect the index. S&P Dow Jones Indices explains that its divisor helps maintain index-level continuity after corporate actions, rebalancing, and other non-market-driven actions.
  6. Use dated data for comparisons. For current concentration or constituent-weight claims, use a dated provider factsheet or constituent-weight file and state the date and metric. Apply the same effective methodology version when comparing actual indexes.

Reading these rules together reveals what the index represents, how that representation can change, and which exposures its label leaves unstated.
