The short verdict: IKEA’s newer smart-home hardware is unusually affordable, practical, and well designed. Its Matter and Thread strategy makes the products more flexible than older proprietary systems. But “works with Google Home” does not always mean “works well in Google Home”—especially for buttons, remotes, DIRIGERA-bridged devices, and automation triggers.
Buy IKEA confidently if you plan to use IKEA Home smart, Apple Home, Alexa, or a carefully configured Matter setup. Be more cautious if Google Home must be your only app and you specifically need IKEA buttons or remotes to trigger routines.

What IKEA is selling now
IKEA announced a new Matter-focused smart-home strategy in 2025, with the newer range rolling out in stages through 2026. IKEA says the range includes 21 Matter-enabled devices covering lighting, sensors, remotes, buttons, and everyday controls. Many of the newer sensors use Matter over Thread, while other products may use Wi-Fi or another supported connection.
Matter matters because it is designed to let compatible devices work with multiple ecosystems rather than locking owners into one manufacturer’s app. Through Matter’s Multi-Admin feature, a device can potentially be shared between compatible platforms such as IKEA Home smart, Google Home, Apple Home, and Alexa.
#1 Best Overall
- Alexa can show you more - Echo Show 5 includes a 5.5” display so you can see news and weather at a glance, make video calls, view compatible cameras, stream music and shows, and more.
- Small size, bigger sound – Stream your favorite music, shows, podcasts, and more from providers like Amazon Music, Spotify, and Prime Video—now with deeper bass and clearer vocals. Includes a 5.5" display so you can view shows, song titles, and more at a glance.
- Keep your home comfortable – Control compatible smart devices like lights and thermostats, even while you're away.
- See more with the built-in camera – Check in on your family, pets, and more using the built-in camera. Drop in on your home when you're out or view the front door from your Echo Show 5 with compatible video doorbells.
- See your photos on display – When not in use, set the background to a rotating slideshow of your favorite photos. Invite family and friends to share photos to your Echo Show. Prime members also get unlimited cloud photo storage.
That promise is real, but it has an important limitation: Matter standardizes communication, not the complete user experience. Each platform still decides which device categories, controls, events, and automation features it supports.
IKEA’s 2025 announcement describes DIRIGERA as a Matter Controller and presents Matter as a way to broaden compatibility across brands. IKEA’s current Matter guide also makes clear that new Matter devices do not strictly require DIRIGERA.
Why the hardware is so appealing
Low prices make smart controls practical
IKEA’s biggest advantage is cost. Launch coverage reported prices starting at approximately $8, although actual prices, stock, bundles, and availability vary by country and product. DIRIGERA has been reported at approximately $110 in the United States; check the current IKEA U.S. product page before buying.
A low-cost button or remote can add useful control to a room without replacing every light switch or installing an expensive whole-home system. That is a more approachable proposition than many enthusiast-oriented smart-home products.
Physical controls are IKEA’s strength
Buttons, remotes, scroll wheels, motion sensors, contact sensors, and simple lighting controls solve everyday problems more naturally than a phone app. They can be placed beside a bed, near a door, or next to a lamp where everyone in the household can use them.

IKEA also designs products around rooms, furniture, lamps, blinds, and storage. That gives the hardware a practical context that many generic smart-home accessories lack. Hands-on coverage from 9to5Google described the BILRESA remotes as pleasant to use and IKEA’s lighting as responsive even in difficult trade-show network conditions. That is a positive hands-on impression, not a controlled latency benchmark, but it reflects where IKEA performs best: physical design and basic interaction.
Local-oriented connectivity is promising
Matter devices can communicate locally over Wi-Fi or Thread instead of routing every command through a vendor cloud. Google describes local Matter control as faster and more reliable in principle, while IKEA says its products are designed to retain basic functionality without an internet connection or remote server.
Recommended Free Tools
That does not make every installation automatically reliable. Matter still depends on a compatible controller, sound local-network discovery, IPv6, and—where applicable—adequate Thread Border Router coverage. Remote access, integrations, updates, and some advanced features may still depend on network or cloud services.
Where Google Home holds IKEA back
The precise problem is not that IKEA devices do not work with Google. IKEA officially supports Google Home and Matter. The problem is that Google Home may recognize a Matter device while exposing incomplete controls, unreliable onboarding, missing device types, or poor support for IKEA’s button and hub architecture.
There is a meaningful difference between these five claims:

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteButtons and remotes expose the fault line
Buttons are not equivalent to lights. A smart bulb mainly needs an on/off or brightness control. A button may require Google Home to support press events, multiple press types, event-based routines, and device-specific metadata.
That is why an IKEA button can be physically excellent and fully useful in IKEA Home smart while remaining a poor Google Home accessory. 9to5Google’s hands-on report and its follow-up coverage reported problems involving IKEA buttons, Google Home, and DIRIGERA.
These reports should not be treated as proof that every IKEA device fails in every Google Home installation. They do demonstrate the more useful warning: technical compatibility is not the same as complete feature support.
Google’s own documentation describes uneven support
Google’s documentation says that Matter device categories are supported at different times and that some third-party devices may appear in Google Home without all controls being available. Google also identifies several setup requirements:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- A Thread Border Router for Matter-over-Thread products.
- IPv6 enabled on the home router.
- A recent Google Home app.
- A compatible Android or iOS device with Bluetooth Low Energy for commissioning.

DIRIGERA: useful bridge, unnecessary extra hub, or both?
DIRIGERA is most valuable to existing IKEA owners. It connects newer and older IKEA products, supports IKEA’s own Home smart experience, can bridge older Zigbee-based products into Matter, and includes Thread Border Router functionality.
IKEA recommends DIRIGERA for an all-IKEA system and says it supports older TRÅDFRI devices as a Matter Bridge. But new Matter devices do not require it. Adding a new Matter bulb or sensor directly to a compatible Google, Apple, or Amazon controller may be the simpler route.
DIRIGERA can also introduce another abstraction layer. A device may be paired to IKEA Home smart, exposed through DIRIGERA, and then imported into Google Home. That creates more opportunities for duplicate devices, mismatched capabilities, offline states, incorrect room assignments, and controls that do not map cleanly between apps. DIRIGERA can simplify IKEA management, but it does not guarantee perfect Google Home behavior.
Which setup makes sense?
| Buyer | Best route |
|---|---|
| One or two new IKEA Matter devices | Pair them directly with an existing compatible Matter ecosystem. |
| Large existing IKEA or TRÅDFRI system | Use DIRIGERA with IKEA Home smart, then share or bridge devices where necessary. |
| Google-first buyer wanting buttons | Verify the exact device and automation support before buying; expect possible limitations. |
| Budget lighting buyer | IKEA remains one of the most attractive low-cost options. |
| Advanced automation enthusiast | Consider Home Assistant or another mature hub-oriented controller. |
| Multi-platform household | Use Matter Multi-Admin carefully and test each device category first. |
How to add a new IKEA Matter device to Google Home
- Confirm that the product carries the Matter logo and determine whether it uses Wi-Fi or Thread.
- Confirm that your home has a compatible Google Home Matter hub. For Thread products, confirm that a compatible Thread Border Router is available.
- Enable IPv6 on the router and update the Google Home app.
- Power on the IKEA device and place it in pairing mode.
- Open Google Home and tap Add → Device.
- Scan the Matter QR code.
- If scanning fails, choose the option to use a setup or pairing code and enter the numeric Matter code. IKEA says the 11-digit numeric code is printed on the device or packaging.
- Assign the device to a room.
- Test basic control, sensor status, button presses, automation triggers, and remote access before installing or mounting the device permanently.
Google documents the QR-code and setup-code process in its Matter device setup instructions.

If pairing or automation fails
- Confirm that the phone and Google Home hub are connected to the same home network.
- Check IPv6 and confirm that the Thread Border Router is online if the device uses Thread.
- Reboot the router, Google Home hub, and IKEA device.
- Try pairing through IKEA Home smart first, then share the device to Google Home using Matter Multi-Admin.
- Use the 11-digit numeric code instead of the QR code.
- Remove incomplete duplicate entries from Google Home before trying again.
- If the device appears but its button or automation controls are missing, treat that as a likely platform-support limitation rather than immediately assuming the hardware is defective.
Do not factory-reset a large established IKEA system until you understand the migration path. A one-device experiment is low risk; rebuilding dozens of bulbs, remotes, rooms, and scenes is not.
What older TRÅDFRI owners should know
Existing owners do not need to abandon working products simply because IKEA is moving toward Matter. IKEA says customers can continue using smart products with DIRIGERA or the TRÅDFRI gateway for as long as the products last.
Its formal support policy is more precise: IKEA promises at least three years of support after purchase for DIRIGERA and TRÅDFRI gateways, including security and compatibility updates for Alexa, Apple HomeKit, and Google Assistant. IKEA also promises at least five years of support after purchase for IKEA smart products paired with a supported hub or gateway. See the smart-product support policy.

Who should buy IKEA smart-home products?
Buy with confidence if:
- Price is the main priority.
- You mainly want lights, sensors, remotes, or simple physical controls.
- You value buttons and room-by-room usability.
- You are comfortable using IKEA Home smart as the primary app.
- You already own IKEA products and can benefit from DIRIGERA’s bridge function.
- You want Matter and Thread without paying premium-brand prices.
Be cautious if:
- Google Home must be the only app.
- You specifically need button presses to launch Google Home automations.
- You expect identical functionality across Google, Apple, Alexa, and IKEA.
- You dislike troubleshooting local-network issues.
- You are replacing a TRÅDFRI gateway in a large, heavily customized installation.
Consider another controller if:
- Advanced event-based automations are central to the purchase.
- You need mature support for remotes, scenes, and mixed-brand devices.
- You are comfortable managing Home Assistant or another enthusiast-oriented platform.
- You want the smoothest possible single-app experience for every device category.
Apple-centric households may prefer Apple Home with a HomePod or Apple TV Matter controller. Echo households can consider Alexa. Advanced users may prefer Home Assistant, while mixed-brand households may find SmartThings a better hub-oriented fit. None is automatically best; the controller should match the automations and devices you actually plan to use.
Final verdict
IKEA’s smart-home hardware gets the fundamentals right: it is affordable, tactile, approachable, and increasingly based on open standards. For budget lighting, sensors, remotes, and everyday controls, IKEA is a compelling choice.
The weak point is the ecosystem layer. Google Home officially supports IKEA and Matter, but support can be uneven for buttons, remotes, bridged devices, and automation events. DIRIGERA is valuable for existing IKEA owners and IKEA-first households, but it is not mandatory for new Matter products and can add complexity to a Google-centered system.
