IKEA’s second-hand marketplace connects people buying and selling used IKEA products; it is not a store inventory of used furniture or a global classifieds service. Ingka Group announced five markets in January 2026: Spain, Norway, Portugal, Poland and Sweden. Availability, eligible items and transaction rules depend on the local marketplace.
What is IKEA’s second-hand marketplace?
It is a peer-to-peer marketplace for used IKEA products. Buyers and sellers connect through a local IKEA marketplace, while the transaction may be directly between the members rather than a purchase from IKEA. IKEA describes the Swedish service as a place to buy and sell second-hand IKEA products: IKEA Sweden’s marketplace explanation.
The service grew out of IKEA Preowned, a trial Ingka Group announced on 27 August 2024 in Madrid and Oslo. That trial was planned to run through December 2024 while Ingka evaluated how customers used a digital second-hand marketplace. On 28 January 2026, Ingka announced a Swedish launch and named five markets: Spain, Norway, Portugal, Poland and Sweden. The announcement is a dated market list, not confirmation that the service is available everywhere or that no later changes have occurred. Where can you buy second-hand furniture at IKEA?
Check IKEA’s marketplace or second-hand information for your country: local availability and terms vary. The five markets named by Ingka in January 2026 were Spain, Norway, Portugal, Poland and Sweden. That announcement does not establish availability in other countries; use the local IKEA site or marketplace to confirm whether listings are open to you.

IKEA’s peer-to-peer marketplace is separate from store resale. In the United States, IKEA says its online second-hand information and in-store As-Is section are ways to find used or reduced items. As-Is stock is held and sold by the store, and can include inspected returns and buybacks, showroom or demo products, new old stock and discontinued goods. The assortment changes daily. Can you sell your used IKEA furniture?
If the marketplace is available in your country and the item meets its local rules, you can list eligible IKEA goods for other people to buy. Listing tools described by Ingka include scanning an IKEA product to receive a suggested price and product information such as photos, dimensions, descriptions, assembly guides and care instructions. These tools were described in its January 2026 announcement; what is available to a seller may depend on the local service.

Rules are market-specific. For example, Belgium’s terms dated 19 March 2026 say IKEA Family members can connect to trade eligible second-hand IKEA furniture and home-furnishing accessories. They require at least two photos and condition information, with catalogue data provided where available. The terms say products must be safe and usable, and exclude IKEA Food, appliances and mattresses. Belgium’s terms are available in IKEA Belgium’s IKEA Family terms.
Portugal’s marketplace page says modified or combined products, mattresses, food and kitchen appliances are excluded. Those are Portugal-specific rules; do not assume the same item list or eligibility requirements apply in another market. Check the local marketplace terms before preparing a listing.

How does buying and selling work?
The service’s basic flow is to find or list an eligible IKEA item through the local marketplace, then follow that market’s reservation, payment and handover process. In Portugal, buyers browse and reserve items and arrange pickup with the seller. The Portugal page says sellers can choose payment by bank transfer or a refund card topped up by 15%. It also says purchase protection is free until 1 January 2027 and otherwise usually costs 5% of the purchase price. These terms and offers are specific to Portugal and may change; consult IKEA Portugal’s marketplace information for current details.
Fees and responsibility differ by location. In Belgium, the terms specify a 5% buyer-protection fee and say the buyer and seller contract directly with each other, not with IKEA Retail or the marketplace operator. Do not treat that fee or arrangement as a universal marketplace rule.

What does the marketplace tell us about demand?
Ingka said in its January 2026 announcement that demand in live markets included bedroom furniture, storage and living-room seating. This is a company-reported observation, not a disclosed count of completed sales. Ingka also set an ambition of 170,000 listings for 2026; that is a target, not an achieved listing count.
The same announcement attributed around 9% of Europe’s second-hand market and 4% globally to IKEA products, without explaining the underlying measurement in the cited passage. It also reported that 52% of younger people regularly buy second-hand furniture or household items mainly to save money, citing an Ingka Group and GlobeScan study; the announcement does not state the study’s fieldwork year in the cited passage. These figures should be read as claims reported by Ingka, not as independently established marketplace results.

Ingka’s 2026 announcement also reported a projection of 7% annual growth and a USD 43 billion market size by 2030 for the global second-hand furniture market. Separately, its 2024 pilot announcement cited 6.4% projected annual growth in 2024 and attributed 10% of the second-hand home-furnishing market to IKEA products. Those are figures from separate dated announcements and should not be combined into a single trend series.
Is IKEA’s marketplace a Craigslist replacement?
Calling it a Craigslist rival is headline shorthand, not a demonstrated comparison. The available marketplace information establishes a service focused on used IKEA goods in selected markets, with country-specific rules. It does not establish that IKEA has displaced Craigslist or that one service is better.
