Yes, IKEA’s roughly $6 Matter smart bulb is real—but the headline needs context. At CES 2026, IKEA showcased a new range of 21 Matter-compatible smart-home products. In the U.S., the likely match for the headline is the KAJPLATS E26 450-lumen smart white-spectrum bulb, listed at $5.99.

That price covers the bulb, not necessarily everything required to control it. The KAJPLATS uses Matter over Thread, so buyers need a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router—or IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub—for phone-based smart-home control.

What IKEA showed at CES 2026

CES 2026 marked IKEA’s first-ever CES appearance, according to CES coverage from Engadget. The company used the event to present a broader smart-home range rather than a single light bulb: lighting, motion and environmental sensors, smart plugs, remotes, and other connected controls.

IKEA had announced the wider Matter-compatible lineup in November 2025. Its global announcement describes 21 new products, with availability staggered by market and product. A CES demonstration or announcement did not mean every item was immediately available in every IKEA store.

The exact bulb behind the “$6” claim

Specification U.S. KAJPLATS model
Product family KAJPLATS
Socket E26
Brightness 450 lumens
Light control Adjustable white spectrum
Connectivity Matter over Thread
Observed U.S. price $5.99

The $5.99 model is a white-spectrum bulb. It can change between warmer and cooler shades of white and can be dimmed wirelessly, but it should not be described as a full-color bulb. IKEA sells separate color-and-white-spectrum KAJPLATS models at higher prices.

The $6 figure also applies to one specific size and output. IKEA’s U.S. catalog lists other KAJPLATS bulbs at roughly $7.99 to $13.99, including decorative versions, brighter 1,100- and 1,600-lumen bulbs, and color-capable models. Check the socket, lumen output, and lighting features before buying.

What Matter over Thread means

Matter is the smart-home interoperability standard. It helps compatible products work across platforms such as Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, Homey, and IKEA’s own system.

  • 【Note】Please ensure the bulb fits your lamp before buying to avoid trouble. It supports only 2.4Ghz WiFi, not 5.0Ghz. Smart bulbs usually don't work with dimmer switches, which may cause flickering, burning out, or buzzing. To dim the lights, use Hub/Apps
  • 【Stable & Smooth Connection】 No more concerns about control issues caused by network drops. All Matter devices within your local area network (LAN) operate smoothly, even when the internet is offline. 2.4 Ghz WiFi connection is supported (5.0 Ghz Wi-Fi connection is not supported)
  • 【Faster and Easier Setup】 Scan the Matter QR code to pair your light bulbs and easily add them to Matter-certisfied APP (Alexa App/ Google Home App/ Apple Home App/ SmartThings App) or AiDot APP. Thanks to the standard Matter protocol, integrating and using Matter - compatible devices has never been simpler
  • 【Robust and Reliable Security】Matter secures devices with proven, standard cryptographic algorithms, protecting every message. Unlimited OTA upgrades build a secure firewall, ensuring user info security and strengthening security measures
  • 【Multi - Platform Interoperability】 Enables simultaneous operation across multiple smart home systems. Boasts powerful interoperability: connect to all apps, control all devices, and link to all cloud services (Specialized in Matter protocol)

Thread is the low-power mesh networking technology used by this bulb. It is not the same as Wi-Fi. A Thread Border Router links the Thread network with the rest of the home network, allowing a phone or smart-home platform to communicate with the bulb.

In practical terms, “Matter-compatible” does not mean the bulb connects directly to any phone without additional equipment. IKEA’s product information says a compatible hub or Thread Border Router is required for phone-based control. A Matter controller that lacks Thread support may not be enough.

Do you need IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub?

Not necessarily. If you already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router, you may be able to add the bulb to your existing ecosystem without buying DIRIGERA.

DIRIGERA is IKEA’s most complete route. It supports the IKEA Home smart app and is designed to manage a larger IKEA setup containing bulbs, sensors, remotes, and plugs. IKEA’s U.S. listing showed the hub at $119.99.

  • 【Matter-Certified】 Matter devices work with any certified platform such as Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home & SmartThings. All Matter-certified devices in your local area network (LAN) will work smoothly even when your home internet goes offline. Take control of your smart home with Matter Multi-Admin by granting access to trusted individuals to manage your devices with ease and security.
  • 【Extra Bright 1100-Lumen Light】Tapo L535E provides 1100 lumens of crisp, high-quality lighting, which is brighter than most standard 800-lumen smart color bulbs. It can brighten up your daily routine or activities and is ideal for any space in your home that requires brighter lighting.
  • 【Millions of Colors & Dimmable】 Easily design scenarios with various vivid colors for your daily routine or special activities with this smart light bulbs. Adjust the brightness from 1% to 100% conveniently with the Tapo app.
  • 【Vibrant Colors & Tunable white】 Experience more attractive and vibrant colors with a higher Color Rendering Index (CRI). Witness the true color spectrum in every corner of your home. Tune your lights to warm white (2500K) for restful sleep in the evening, or cool white (6500K) during working hours or when you need a morning boost.
  • 【Voice & Remote Control】 Free up your hands by using simple voice commands with Alexa, Siri, or Google Assistant. Control your smart light bulbs from anywhere with the Tapo app Dim, turn on or off, or change the colors of your light bulb remotely at your fingertips.

That creates two very different costs:

  • About $6 incrementally: if your home already has suitable Matter and Thread hardware.
  • About $125.98 before tax: a $5.99 bulb plus the $119.99 DIRIGERA hub, based on the listed prices. This is an inferred total, not an advertised bundle price.

For someone buying one bulb, the hub can cost far more than the light itself. For a household planning a larger IKEA smart-home installation, the calculation may make more sense.

What the bulb can do

  • Dim wirelessly.
  • Adjust the tone of white light.
  • Work over Matter on a Thread network.
  • Join compatible Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, Homey, or IKEA smart-home setups.
  • Use an IKEA remote, sold separately unless purchased in a starter kit.

Platform support does not guarantee identical controls everywhere. Basic on/off, dimming, and white-tone adjustment may be available across ecosystems, while automations, firmware management, remote behavior, and app controls can differ.

Other KAJPLATS options

The broader range matters because the $5.99 bulb is not suitable for every fixture or room. IKEA’s U.S. catalog lists, among others:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • An E26 1,100-lumen white-spectrum bulb listed at $9.99.
  • An E26 1,600-lumen white-spectrum bulb listed at $13.99.
  • An E26 1,100-lumen color-and-white-spectrum bulb listed at $12.99.
  • E12 and GU10 versions with different prices and form factors.

A 450-lumen bulb may suit an accent light, bedside fixture, or modest lamp better than a primary room light. Confirm the fixture’s socket before ordering: the headline model is E26, while other KAJPLATS products use different fittings.

How to set it up

  1. Confirm the bulb’s socket, voltage compatibility, brightness, and color capability.
  2. Install it in the fixture and leave the fixture powered on during setup. A wall switch that cuts power will also cut off smart control.
  3. Choose a setup route: DIRIGERA with the IKEA Home smart app, or a compatible third-party Matter ecosystem with Thread Border Router support.
  4. Scan or enter the Matter setup code from the bulb’s packaging or product materials.
  5. Add the bulb to the chosen platform, assign it to a room, and test dimming and white-tone adjustment.
  6. If physical control is important, add an IKEA remote separately or buy a KAJPLATS starter kit. The starter kit includes a remote, but not the DIRIGERA hub.

If pairing fails

Matter setup is not always equally straightforward across platforms. If the bulb will not pair:

  • Confirm that the hub supports both Matter and Thread, not Matter alone.
  • Check that the Thread Border Router is online.
  • Keep the phone, bulb, and controller close together during commissioning.
  • Make sure the bulb remains continuously powered.
  • Verify that the Matter code belongs to that specific bulb.
  • If the bulb was previously added elsewhere, remove it from the old system or reset it first.

IKEA’s KAJPLATS instructions describe resetting the bulb by switching it on and off six times in the specified rhythm. Resetting may be necessary before re-pairing it with another Matter controller.

Who should buy it?

The KAJPLATS E26 450-lumen bulb is a strong low-cost entry point for someone who already owns compatible Matter and Thread hardware, needs adjustable white light, and does not need color effects or high brightness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is less compelling as a standalone purchase for someone starting from zero. The bulb’s low price can conceal the cost of a controller or hub, and DIRIGERA is a substantial purchase beside a $5.99 light. Buyers should also avoid assuming that every IKEA Matter bulb has the same price or features.

The larger IKEA announcement is arguably more significant than the bulb itself. By adding affordable Matter-over-Thread lighting, sensors, plugs, and controls, IKEA is positioning the KAJPLATS range as a broader smart-home platform rather than just another inexpensive connected light. Samsung SmartThings has also announced support for IKEA’s new Matter-over-Thread devices, making the range relevant to existing SmartThings households.

Bottom line

IKEA’s $6 smart-bulb claim is substantially accurate in the U.S.: the KAJPLATS E26 450-lumen white-spectrum bulb is listed at $5.99. But it is not a complete smart-lighting system by itself. The bulb uses Matter over Thread, may require a compatible controller and Thread Border Router, and offers adjustable white light rather than full-color lighting. It is an excellent inexpensive add-on for a prepared smart home—not necessarily an inexpensive way to build one from scratch.
