Yes. IKEA TRÅDFRI smart lighting works with Google Assistant, but IKEA’s documented setup requires a TRÅDFRI gateway; it is not a hub-free, direct connection from bulb to Google Home. IKEA announced the compatibility in 2017, so “now works” describes a historical launch, not a new feature. To connect it, enable Google Assistant in the IKEA Home smart app, then link TRÅDFRI in Google Home.
What IKEA announced—and when
On May 23, 2017, IKEA announced that its smart-lighting range would gain compatibility with Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa and Apple HomeKit. IKEA described Google support as forthcoming, initially aiming for summer or early autumn. IKEA’s announcement framed the system as an accessible way to add connected lighting without replacing a home’s fixtures.

In an update dated November 1, IKEA said Alexa and Apple Home app support were available and described Google Assistant as the next expected compatibility release. That update did not establish a single public launch date for every market or language. IKEA’s current US support guidance confirms the integration is available for the documented TRÅDFRI setup. What you need for the documented TRÅDFRI setup
- A compatible IKEA smart light, already paired with the IKEA system.
- A TRÅDFRI gateway, connected to your home network. IKEA says the gateway is required for controlling TRÅDFRI lights through the IKEA app and for Google Assistant control in this setup.
- The IKEA Home smart app, the current name for the app formerly called the TRÅDFRI app.
- The Google Home app and a Google account with access to Google Assistant in your market and language.
- A compatible steering device, such as a remote, dimmer or sensor, for initial IKEA product setup where required.
IKEA’s guidance describes the gateway as connecting the lighting system to the network; it does not document TRÅDFRI bulbs as direct, hub-free Google Assistant devices. If you have a newer IKEA hub, identify it before following instructions: DIRIGERA is a different generation from the TRÅDFRI gateway, and IKEA’s support policy refers to both. How to link TRÅDFRI with Google Home
- Set up the light in IKEA Home smart. Pair it with your IKEA lighting system using a compatible steering device if needed. Make sure the light responds in the app before moving on.
- Enable the integration in IKEA Home smart. Open the app’s integrations menu and turn on Google Assistant integration. IKEA’s sequence starts here.
- Link the service in Google Home. Open Google Home, choose the option to add or link a device or service, and select the TRÅDFRI service. Follow the account-linking prompts. Google’s wording and screens can vary by app version and platform; its third-party device guidance describes the general linking route.
- Assign the discovered lights to rooms. Check room names and device names so voice commands identify the intended lights rather than another device.
- Test a command. Try turning a light on or off, dimming it, or addressing a named room. Exact phrasing depends on Assistant language and your Google Home setup.
IKEA’s app labels may differ slightly by country, language, phone platform, hub generation and app revision. Its current US instructions specify enabling the integration in IKEA Home smart before linking TRÅDFRI in Google Home. See IKEA’s troubleshooting and integration steps.
What voice control can—and cannot—do
Representative commands include “Hey Google, turn on the living room lights,” “Hey Google, dim the kitchen lights,” and “Hey Google, set the bedroom light to 50 percent.” Room and group control depend on how devices are named and assigned in Google Home.
Capabilities depend on the particular bulb or fixture. IKEA’s smart-lighting range includes products with dimming, adjustable white tones and color effects, but those features are not universal. Check the specific product: a dimmable bulb does not necessarily support color or warm-to-cool adjustment. IKEA describes dimming and warm/cool adjustment as system functions where supported by the product. IKEA’s usage guide covers the system’s controls.

Google Assistant is one way to control the lights, not the only one. Depending on the products and setup, IKEA controls can include remotes, wireless dimmers, motion sensors, the IKEA app, and IKEA scenes or timers. IKEA says one steering device can control up to 10 light sources in the documented setup. A conventional wall switch can cut or restore power, but it cannot provide smart dimming or color-temperature adjustment; if it is off, the bulb cannot receive wireless commands.
TRÅDFRI gateway and DIRIGERA are different setups
TRÅDFRI gateway is the legacy hub; DIRIGERA is IKEA’s newer hub. IKEA’s support policy refers to both, along with the IKEA Home smart app and the older IKEA Home Smart 1 app. Do not assume that a menu sequence, app name or device capability for one hub applies identically to the other. Check the IKEA instructions for the hub and product you own before pairing or migrating devices. IKEA’s support policy describes the current ecosystem terminology and support conditions.
IKEA identifies Zigbee Light Link as the protocol used by its smart-lighting products. That is useful context for the older system, but it does not make every newer IKEA or third-party Matter product part of the same TRÅDFRI gateway workflow. IKEA’s compatibility information also notes that Google receives data generated when Google Assistant is used to control IKEA smart lighting.

If the lights work in IKEA but not Google Home
When a light responds in IKEA Home smart but not through Google, focus first on the integration and network path rather than resetting the bulb.

- Check that the gateway is powered and online, and confirm the light still responds in IKEA Home smart.
- In the IKEA app, confirm Google Assistant integration is enabled.
- In Google Home, unlink the TRÅDFRI service. Then enable the integration in IKEA Home smart first and link it again from Google Home.
- Review room assignments and names. Duplicate names or a light assigned to the wrong room can make voice control appear unreliable.
- If Google still cannot discover the devices, restart the gateway and router, then retry the linking sequence.
- Reset and re-pair a bulb only as a last resort; a reset can require setting it up again in the IKEA system.
IKEA recommends disabling and re-enabling integrations in the correct order for comparable voice-assistant connection problems. If a Google service-linking problem persists, check Google’s device setup guidance and IKEA’s troubleshooting page. Remote control and network limits
IKEA describes control through its app for the TRÅDFRI gateway setup as limited to the local Wi-Fi range. Remote control may be available after linking an external service such as Google Assistant, but it depends on internet access, account linking, Google Home availability and regional support; it is not a guarantee of access from every location. IKEA also says gateway-specific settings such as groups and moods are stored on that gateway, so separate gateway installations have separate configurations. Is TRÅDFRI a sensible choice now?
If you already own TRÅDFRI
Google Assistant can add voice control without requiring you to replace compatible lights. Keep the gateway connected, link the service using the IKEA-first sequence, and retain physical controls as an alternative if cloud linking is unavailable.
If you are buying a new system
Check the exact IKEA bulb and hub generation before buying. The legacy TRÅDFRI Google integration requires a gateway, while products in newer smart-home systems may use different standards and setup paths. Compare the need for a hub, physical controls, bulb features and the platform’s support terms rather than assuming every IKEA light is TRÅDFRI. IKEA’s support policy covers specified support periods and conditions, not indefinite development. IKEA’s smart-lighting support page is the place to check current product guidance.
If privacy matters
There are distinct parts to the setup: Zigbee communication between compatible lights and the IKEA gateway, IKEA’s app and account, and Google Assistant’s voice and smart-home services. IKEA says Google receives data generated when Assistant is used to control IKEA lighting. Review the relevant service settings and privacy terms for the accounts you choose to link.
