Start with the fixture: match its socket and shape, then choose the brightness and whether you want adjustable white light or colour. IKEA’s announced KAJPLATS range covers E26/E27, E14-family and GU10 fittings, but variants and availability differ by market. A DIRIGERA hub is optional for basic direct pairing; it is the route to IKEA Home smart app features such as scenes, schedules and multi-device control.
This is a feature-based buying guide, not a comparative test. IKEA’s official materials describe product specifications and setup, but do not establish which bulb performs best in independent testing. Check your local IKEA listing, fixture requirements and compatibility before buying.
Which IKEA smart light should you buy?
For a standard screw-base fixture
Look for a KAJPLATS bulb with the matching E26 or E27 base and the light output you need. IKEA’s November 6, 2025 announcement lists white-spectrum options at 470, 1,055 and 1,521 lumens, as well as a 1,055-lumen colour-and-white option. E26 and E27 are related but distinct base designations; use the one specified for your fixture and market, rather than assuming they are interchangeable.
For colour scenes
Choose a KAJPLATS variant explicitly described as colour-and-white, in the correct fitting. IKEA announced colour options in E26/E27, E14-family and GU10 formats, but not every base, shape or output in the range changes colour. If adjustable shades are not important, a white-spectrum version may be the more direct choice.

For a compact fitting or spotlight
Check E14-family bulbs for compatible compact fittings and GU10 bulbs for fixtures designed for GU10 spotlights. IKEA notes that E14 variants may use E12 or E17 bases in some markets. These fittings are not interchangeable: read the fixture label and local product specification before purchase.
For simple control without an app
IKEA says some bulbs, remotes and motion sensors can pair directly without the app or Wi-Fi. This can suit a single room where physical control is enough. Confirm that the specific bulb and control device support the pairing you want.

For app control, routines or multiple devices
Choose DIRIGERA with the IKEA Home smart app if you want app-based on/off and dimming, colour or colour-temperature adjustment, room and group controls, scenes, automations, routines, schedules or voice-assistant integration. IKEA’s UK support information lists Google Home, Apple Home and Alexa integration through IKEA Home smart; availability and behavior can vary by region, platform and feature.
For integrated cabinet or interior lighting
For compatible IKEA integrated lights, check whether the installation needs a TRÅDFRI LED driver and ANSLUTA power cord. Select a driver with adequate capacity and enough connections for the lights. IKEA’s U.S. guide documents 10 W and 30 W driver options, but that guide is not evidence that every listed model is currently in stock.

For motion-triggered lighting
A compatible sensor can trigger a suitable bulb or driver setup. IKEA’s 2025 range announcement describes MYGGSPRAY for indoor and outdoor motion use; its U.S. guide says VALLHORN can pair with up to ten light sources. These are different products, so do not assume they share the same features or setup limits.
What to compare before choosing a bulb

Do you need DIRIGERA?
No—not for every basic use. IKEA’s support FAQ says some bulbs, remotes and motion sensors can pair directly without the app or Wi-Fi. DIRIGERA is the documented choice when you want app control, routines, voice control, a multi-room setup or a mix of older and newer IKEA products.

For hub setup, connect DIRIGERA to power and your router with its Ethernet cable, then use the IKEA Home smart app to set up the hub and add products. IKEA’s instructions say to scan the product’s Matter QR code; bulbs are ready to pair for about 15 minutes after being powered on. Follow the instructions for your specific product if onboarding does not complete in that window.

IKEA’s November 2025 announcement describes a new Matter-compatible smart-home range. Its support information says Matter-enabled products require a compatible smart-home hub and describes DIRIGERA as supporting Matter, Thread and Zigbee. Separately, IKEA’s 2024 announcement described DIRIGERA’s Matter Bridge role for IKEA Zigbee products. In practical terms, the hub can expose supported IKEA products to Matter ecosystems; this does not establish that every product, platform or feature works universally. Check the compatibility details for the specific device and ecosystem.

IKEA’s U.S. buying guide, posted October 1, 2025, remains useful for its documented TRÅDFRI and integrated-lighting setup, but predates the KAJPLATS announcement. It warns that TRÅDFRI bulbs may not work with wired dimmers, advises checking fixture wattage, and explains the role of TRÅDFRI LED drivers with integrated lights. Treat those as model-specific compatibility checks, not proof of current stock for every item in the guide.
What IKEA’s published numbers do—and do not—tell you
- IKEA announced eleven KAJPLATS smart-bulb variations in November 2025. The announcement spans standard and compact bases, GU10 spotlights and clear-glass decorative bulbs; it does not mean every variant is sold in every market.
- The same announcement covers 21 Matter-compatible smart-home products across the wider range. That figure is not a count of lighting products alone.
- IKEA’s U.S. buying guide states a DIRIGERA capacity of up to 50 devices, including light sources and steering devices. This is the guide’s stated system capacity, not a performance test.
These are manufacturer-published specifications and claims, not independent measurements of brightness quality, colour accuracy, reliability, energy savings or lifespan.
