IKEA announced its new Matter-compatible smart-home range on November 6, 2025, including the GRILLPLATS smart plug and two BILRESA remote controls. The products use Matter over Thread and are now listed on IKEA’s U.S. website, although prices, stock and rollout timing vary by market.
The important qualification is that Matter does not mean the devices work entirely by themselves. For app-based control, buyers need a suitable Matter controller and Thread Border Router. IKEA’s DIRIGERA hub is one option, but compatible Apple, Google, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings or Homey setups may also work, depending on their support for each device and feature.

This was not a single-product announcement. IKEA introduced a broader range of 21 Matter-compatible smart-home products spanning lighting, motion sensors, air-quality sensors, door and window sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, water-leak sensors and controls.
The relevant control products are:
- BILRESA dual-button remote control
- BILRESA scroll-wheel remote control
- BILRESA three-pack kits in dual-button and scroll-wheel versions
- GRILLPLATS smart plug
- GRILLPLATS smart plug with remote control
IKEA describes the range as part of a rebuilding of its smart-home system around Matter. The company’s official announcement says the products would launch in stages, so the original announcement date should not be confused with a single worldwide availability date.

GRILLPLATS smart plug: inexpensive remote control for ordinary devices
The standalone GRILLPLATS turns a compatible lamp or smaller appliance into a remotely controllable device. IKEA says it can be operated through the IKEA Home smart app, a compatible remote control or a motion sensor. It also supports energy-use tracking within the IKEA ecosystem and can be paired with up to 10 plugs on one remote control or motion sensor.
The plug uses Matter over Thread, rather than operating as a simple Wi-Fi-only accessory. Its low price makes it attractive for lamps, fans and other suitable loads, but buyers should check the product’s electrical specifications and the appliance’s power-loss behavior before connecting it.

Safety qualification: a smart plug should not automatically be treated as suitable for every heater, high-power appliance, outdoor installation or safety-critical device. Avoid equipment that could operate unsafely when power returns after an interruption unless the appliance is specifically designed for that behavior.
GRILLPLATS with remote: the ready-made kit
The GRILLPLATS plug-with-remote bundle includes a physical remote and is intended for buyers who want basic on/off control without selecting the plug and controller separately. IKEA lists support for app, remote and motion-sensor control, along with energy-use monitoring and expansion with additional IKEA smart products.
In the U.S. research snapshot, the standalone plug was listed at $7.99, while the plug-and-remote bundle was listed at $14.99. The remote requires batteries, which are sold separately.
BILRESA remote controls: what each model does
BILRESA dual-button remote
The dual-button model is the lower-cost, simpler controller. IKEA says it can turn smart products on and off, dim lights, change color where supported, operate groups and trigger preset scenes. Its product information describes control of up to 10 smart products.
This is the better fit for a bedside, wall or entryway control where straightforward lighting and scene commands matter more than direct adjustment across several groups.

BILRESA scroll-wheel remote
The scroll-wheel model adds a physical wheel for adjusting brightness and color. IKEA describes support for on/off control, dimming, color adjustment, groups and preset scenes. It can control up to three groups, with up to 10 smart products per group according to the product information.
Choose it when physical, continuous adjustment is more useful than repeated button presses—for example, when changing the brightness of several lighting zones.
Neither remote should automatically be assumed to offer identical universal button remapping across every Matter platform. Matter enables interoperability, but scene behavior, group assignment and configuration depend partly on the controller ecosystem.

What Matter over Thread means
Matter is the application-layer standard that helps compatible smart-home products work across supported ecosystems. Thread is the low-power mesh networking technology used by these IKEA products.
That distinction matters. A Matter-over-Thread product still needs network infrastructure. For phone-based or networked operation, the setup generally requires:
- A Matter-compatible smart-home controller.
- A Thread Border Router.
- The relevant IKEA Home smart app or third-party platform app.
- Current firmware for the controller, app and device.
DIRIGERA is IKEA’s recommended hub and is particularly useful for an IKEA-centered home. It can provide IKEA Home smart app control, central device management and a way to organize newer products alongside older IKEA devices.

- 【Matter-Certified】Matter-certified devices, regardless of brand, can work together and are compatible with most major smart home platforms like Amazon Alexa, Apple HomeKit, Google Home, and Samsung SmartThings. Enjoy more flexible and unified control.
- 【Insightful Energy Tracking】 Monitor your energy consumption with in-depth statistics and clear visuals, helping you optimize power usage.
- 【Estimate Your Energy Bill】 Enhance energy management by integrating with billing systems for clear cost visualization (both single and periodic readings). Additionally, programmable scheduling allows automatic operation of high-consumption devices during off-peak hours with lower electricity rates, resulting in cost savings.
- 【Overcharge Prevention & Power Management】 Automatically cuts off power based on user-set thresholds and durations to prevent overcharging, conserve energy, and protect connected devices from overcurrents by shutting off when power exceeds set limits.
- 【Voice & Remote Control】 With built-in support for both Alexa and Google Assistant, issue simple voice commands to adjust settings, turn devices on or off, or even access specific functions without lifting a finger. Manage Tapo P110M and its connected devices from anywhere with the user-friendly Tapo app.
DIRIGERA is not necessarily required if the household already has a compatible Matter controller with Thread Border Router capability. However, “no DIRIGERA required” is not the same as “no hub or infrastructure required.” A controller may support Matter but lack Thread capability, or may support the device category while offering fewer features.
Compatibility with Apple, Google, Alexa, SmartThings and Homey
IKEA identifies Amazon, Apple, Google, Homey and Samsung among the compatible ecosystems. That means the products are designed to be added to supported Matter environments, not that every function behaves identically in each one.
Basic on/off control is generally the most portable function. Support can vary for:
- Energy-use displays and historical data
- Scenes and automation triggers
- Group assignment
- Remote commissioning and configuration
- Battery reporting
- Firmware updates
- Scroll-wheel or multi-button behavior
For the exact pairing sequence, use the relevant BILRESA manual or GRILLPLATS manual. Matter setup is not identical across Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Homey and IKEA Home smart.
How the new products fit older IKEA equipment
GRILLPLATS and BILRESA are native Matter products. That does not mean older TRÅDFRI or other Zigbee accessories have suddenly become native Matter devices.
DIRIGERA can serve as the central IKEA ecosystem component and may bridge or manage older IKEA devices alongside the newer range. IKEA says newer bulbs, sensors and remotes can work with IKEA products across generations, but the precise controls and integrations depend on the hub and platform involved.
Which product should you choose?
Choose GRILLPLATS if:
- You want low-cost remote on/off control for a suitable lamp or smaller appliance.
- Energy-use tracking is useful to you.
- You already have DIRIGERA or another Matter-and-Thread setup.
- You prefer Matter interoperability over advanced plug-specific features.
Choose the plug-and-remote bundle if:
- You want physical control immediately.
- You do not want to select a separate remote.
- The bundle’s higher price is worthwhile for your room or installation.
Choose the dual-button BILRESA if:
- You want the least expensive physical remote.
- Simple on/off, dimming, color and scene control are enough.
- You do not need several lighting groups controlled directly from one remote.
Choose the scroll-wheel BILRESA if:
- You frequently adjust brightness or color.
- You want direct control of multiple lighting groups.
- A wheel is more convenient than pressing buttons repeatedly.
Choose a three-pack if:
- You need controls at the bed, entryway and main living area.
- Several rooms need the same type of controller.
- The multi-pack price is better suited to your installation than individual remotes.
Choose DIRIGERA if:
- Your home is primarily built around IKEA products.
- You need older IKEA devices and the newer Matter range to coexist.
- IKEA Home smart app features matter more than minimizing the number of hubs.
Skip DIRIGERA if:
- You already have a reliable Matter controller and Thread Border Router.
- Your household is standardized on another supported platform.
- You only need one device and do not need IKEA-specific management.
Common setup problems
“My Matter controller cannot find the device”
Check whether the controller supports Thread, whether a Thread Border Router is available and whether the device has already been commissioned to another Matter fabric. Updating the app, hub and device firmware can also be necessary.

“Matter works, but a feature is missing”
That may be a platform-support difference rather than a hardware fault. Energy monitoring, scenes, group behavior, button mapping and wheel semantics may not be exposed identically in every ecosystem.
Recommended Free Tools
“The remote does not behave like a universal remote”
BILRESA’s exact commands and assignments can depend on the controller. Do not assume every button can be freely mapped to arbitrary third-party products.
“The plug is not suitable for my appliance”
Do not choose solely on the $7.99 price. Verify electrical ratings, intended use and how the appliance behaves when power is restored. A simple smart plug is not automatically appropriate for high-power, outdoor or safety-critical equipment.
Availability and alternatives
The products are listed on IKEA’s U.S. website as of the August 2026 research snapshot, but availability can vary by ZIP code, store and stock status. Other regions may have different launch schedules and prices.
Buyers who want alternatives should compare the specific product and protocol, not just the brand. Eve may suit buyers prioritizing established energy-monitoring and Apple-oriented products; TP-Link Tapo offers a broad Wi-Fi range; Nanoleaf is relevant to Thread-based lighting; Philips Hue offers a mature lighting ecosystem; and Home Assistant is aimed at advanced users who want extensive automation control and are willing to manage more setup themselves.
Bottom line
GRILLPLATS and BILRESA are compelling mainly because of their low prices and physical controls. The $7.99 plug and $6.99 dual-button remote are especially attractive for buyers who already have Matter-and-Thread infrastructure. The scroll-wheel remote is the more capable choice for lighting adjustment, while the plug-and-remote bundle is the simplest starting point.
The main cost question is not only the hardware. Buyers without a Matter controller and Thread Border Router may need additional infrastructure, and IKEA-focused households may find DIRIGERA worthwhile for managing older and newer devices together. Before buying, confirm platform support, battery requirements, local stock and whether the intended appliance is safe to control through a remotely switched outlet.
