IKEA Is Expanding Its Smart-Home Push With Five New Matter Sensors

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IKEA’s November 6, 2025 smart-home refresh introduced 21 Matter-compatible products, including five sensors for motion, doors and windows, temperature, air quality, and water leaks. The sensors are unusually inexpensive, with U.S. prices observed at approximately $9.99 for four models and $34.99 for the air-quality sensor. But the real cost and complexity depend on whether you already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router—or need IKEA’s $119.99 DIRIGERA hub.

For homeowners, renters, and renovation projects, the range offers affordable ways to automate lighting, monitor indoor conditions, and receive early leak warnings. It is less compelling if you need laboratory-grade air measurements, advanced automation logic, or a completely hub-free installation.

This is a broader Matter refresh, not just a sensor launch

The sensors are part of IKEA’s larger effort to rebuild its smart-home range around Matter-compatible products. The November 2025 announcement covered 21 products across sensors, lighting, and controls.

That wider range includes KAJPLATS smart bulbs, BILRESA remotes, and GRILLPLATS smart plugs. The significance is practical: sensors become more useful when they can trigger something else. A MYGGSPRAY motion event can turn on a hallway light, a MYGGBETT contact event can illuminate a cupboard, and a KLIPPBOK alert can notify a phone when water reaches the sensor.

IKEA’s strategy is a shift from a primarily IKEA-controlled lighting ecosystem toward a more interoperable platform. Existing IKEA customers may gain a broader choice of control systems, while new buyers can use inexpensive sensors without necessarily committing to every IKEA component.

What Matter over Thread actually means

Matter is the interoperability standard. It helps compatible smart-home devices communicate with supported ecosystems such as Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant, and IKEA Home smart.

Thread is the low-power wireless network used by these sensors. It is designed for small, battery-powered devices, but a Matter-over-Thread product still needs suitable network infrastructure. In particular, the home needs a Thread Border Router to connect the Thread network with the rest of the smart home.

IKEA’s product pages explicitly describe MYGGSPRAY and ALPSTUGA as Matter over Thread and state that a Thread Border Router is required. A compatible Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, Homey, or other controller may provide the necessary infrastructure, but a phone being Matter-compatible does not automatically mean it is a Thread Border Router.

Matter also does not guarantee identical features in every app. Basic readings or on/off states may transfer, while notifications, history, calibration controls, display settings, and automation options can vary by platform. Check the capabilities of the specific ecosystem and hardware you already own.

Do you need the DIRIGERA hub?

If you want IKEA Home smart

DIRIGERA is the practical—and according to IKEA’s setup model, required—choice for using the IKEA Home smart app’s complete control and automation experience. IKEA listed the hub at approximately $119.99 in the U.S. on the August 16, 2026 catalog snapshot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DIRIGERA also matters to people who already own older IKEA smart products. IKEA says the hub can act as a Matter Bridge, exposing compatible older IKEA devices to Matter-based platforms. That may be more valuable than the new sensors themselves for a household with an established IKEA lighting installation.

If you already use another smart-home platform

You may be able to pair a new IKEA sensor with Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, Home Assistant, or another Matter controller without buying DIRIGERA. The exact requirements depend on the platform’s Matter and Thread support and the hardware in your home.

Before purchasing, identify whether your existing hub, smart speaker, display, router, or home-automation server includes Thread Border Router functionality. If it does not, the nominally $9.99 sensor may require additional hardware.

What each sensor is best for

MYGGSPRAY: the inexpensive motion-trigger option

MYGGSPRAY is a motion sensor intended for indoor or outdoor lighting triggers. IKEA says it can control up to 10 light sources at the same time and gives it an IP67 rating for protection against dust and water exposure.

That makes it a sensible choice for hallways, stairs, entrances, garages, storage rooms, and closets—especially where a switch is inconvenient. It is better understood as a straightforward lighting trigger than as an advanced occupancy sensor with sophisticated presence detection.

It uses two AAA batteries, sold separately. IKEA customer reviews include reports of reliable operation as well as reports of random Thread disconnections. Those are user experiences rather than controlled testing, but they are a reason to plan for good Thread coverage and straightforward access for troubleshooting.

MYGGBETT: door and window status

MYGGBETT detects whether a door or window is open or closed. Through a connected smart-home system, it can support phone notifications, lighting routines, or reminders when a window has been left open.

For a home-improvement project, useful placements include exterior doors, basement windows, equipment cupboards, medicine cabinets, and utility-room doors. It can also trigger a light in a wardrobe or storage space when the door opens. Do not treat it as a substitute for a monitored security system; it is a contact sensor whose usefulness depends on the automation and notification platform around it.

TIMMERFLOTTE: low-cost temperature and humidity monitoring

TIMMERFLOTTE measures temperature and humidity and displays the readings locally when its button is pressed. It uses two AAA batteries, sold separately, and is designed to work with DIRIGERA and supported Matter systems.

It can help identify broad changes in a bedroom, nursery, basement, plant room, or storage area. In construction and maintenance contexts, that can make it useful for spotting persistent damp conditions or unusual temperature changes that deserve further inspection. It is not a replacement for investigating moisture intrusion, condensation, inadequate ventilation, or HVAC faults.

Customer reviews report both easy setup and complaints about Thread reliability, limited app settings, and questionable temperature accuracy. These reports should be treated as anecdotal warnings, not verified product defects or independent accuracy tests.

ALPSTUGA: the broadest indoor-air monitor

ALPSTUGA measures CO2, PM2.5, temperature, and humidity. It also has a display and clock function, and IKEA recommends using it with an air purifier.

Its readings can be useful as indicators of trends—for example, rising CO2 in a closed bedroom may suggest that ventilation needs attention, while changes in PM2.5 can indicate cooking or other particulate sources. Treat those readings as household guidance, not medical advice.

ALPSTUGA is not battery-powered. It requires continuous USB-C power, and IKEA sells the cable and power adapter separately. That affects placement: a convenient wall outlet may be more important than the ideal location for measuring room conditions.

IKEA customer reviews include concerns about CO2 accuracy, temperature calibration, power-cycle behavior, and firmware stability. There is no basis here for calling ALPSTUGA a professional, medical-grade, or laboratory-grade instrument. Buyers who need independently validated measurements should look for a product with published testing and specifications.

KLIPPBOK: an inexpensive leak warning

KLIPPBOK detects water leaks, emits an audible alert, and can notify a phone when connected through a hub. Good locations include the floor beneath sinks, washing machines, dishwashers, water heaters, and other plumbing fixtures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leak sensors are most valuable when they provide warning before water damage becomes extensive. Place them where water is likely to collect, keep the alarm accessible, and test the alert after installation. A sensor does not shut off a supply line or replace plumbing maintenance, a leak-detection valve, or a monitored alarm system.

Check IKEA’s current product listing for KLIPPBOK’s battery specification and expected battery life before purchase. Do not infer those details from the other models.

What the complete system can cost

One-sensor setup

If you already have a compatible Matter controller and Thread Border Router, the entry cost can be approximately $9.99 for one MYGGSPRAY, MYGGBETT, TIMMERFLOTTE, or KLIPPBOK, plus any required batteries. ALPSTUGA starts at approximately $34.99 and also needs a USB-C cable and power adapter.

This is where IKEA’s pricing is most compelling: an existing smart-home owner can add basic sensing at a very low device cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

IKEA-centered setup

A new IKEA Home smart installation may include:

  • DIRIGERA at approximately $119.99;
  • one or more sensors;
  • AAA batteries for MYGGSPRAY and TIMMERFLOTTE;
  • a USB-C cable and power adapter for ALPSTUGA;
  • smart bulbs, remotes, or GRILLPLATS plugs if the goal is automation rather than monitoring.

The hub can therefore cost more than a collection of sensors. Buying DIRIGERA solely for one $9.99 sensor is difficult to justify unless you also want IKEA Home smart, older-device integration, or a central IKEA-controlled setup.

Where IKEA’s sensors fit—and where they do not

Choose IKEA when:

  • Low device prices are the priority.
  • You already own IKEA lights or smart-home products.
  • You need simple lighting triggers, contact sensing, room monitoring, or leak alerts.
  • You want Matter compatibility and already have suitable Thread infrastructure.
  • You prefer inexpensive expansion devices over premium analytics and measurement specifications.

Be cautious when:

  • You need independently validated CO2 or PM2.5 accuracy.
  • You have no Thread Border Router and do not want to add or configure one.
  • You expect complex conditional automations, detailed history, or advanced notification rules.
  • You need guaranteed Thread performance throughout a large or difficult building.
  • You expect every feature to appear identically in IKEA Home smart, Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings, and Home Assistant.
  • You assume ALPSTUGA can operate without a permanent power connection.

How the alternatives compare

For an Apple household with HomePods or an Apple TV and suitable Thread infrastructure, using IKEA sensors directly in Apple Home may avoid buying DIRIGERA. The same principle applies to households already invested in Google Home, Alexa, or SmartThings hardware.

Home Assistant is potentially the strongest fit for technically confident users who want local control, detailed historical data, and multi-vendor automations. It also demands more setup and troubleshooting. IKEA Home smart is simpler for an IKEA-centered installation, particularly when legacy IKEA devices need to be brought into a Matter environment.

The right comparison is therefore not just sensor price. Consider the controller you already own, Thread coverage, the app’s automation features, the value of historical data, and whether you need one vendor’s ecosystem to manage everything.

Practical installation checklist

  1. Identify the intended job. Choose motion, contact, climate, air quality, or leak detection before choosing a model.
  2. Check network compatibility. Confirm that your chosen platform supports the sensor category and that your home has a Thread Border Router.
  3. Decide whether DIRIGERA adds value. It is most useful for IKEA Home smart, older IKEA products, and an IKEA-centered installation.
  4. Budget for accessories. Include batteries, USB-C power accessories, bulbs, plugs, and any additional network hardware.
  5. Plan placement. Keep leak sensors near likely collection points, contact sensors aligned correctly, and powered air-quality sensors near a suitable outlet.
  6. Test the automation. Confirm that a motion event turns on the intended light, a door event generates the expected notification, and a leak sensor’s audible and app alerts work.
  7. Plan recovery. Leave battery-powered devices accessible and make sure you can reach powered devices if they need a restart or firmware update.
