I stopped using robot vacuums after the third-generation Roomba era, around 2007. In a small apartment, sweeping took only a few minutes, and the robots I knew seemed too inconsistent to justify the cost. Moving into a larger home changed the calculation—and testing the ECOVACS DEEBOT T80 OMNI and X9 PRO OMNI changed my mind.
They do not replace every vacuum, mop, or cleaning session. What they do is more useful: they provide frequent maintenance cleaning with far less day-to-day effort. Dust, small debris, dander and everyday marks are dealt with regularly, so manual cleaning becomes less frequent.

My earlier experience made robot vacuums seem unnecessary. In a small apartment, I could sweep quickly, and older machines were associated with primitive navigation, missed areas and unpredictable cleaning. I was even more doubtful about mopping. A robot dragging a damp pad across the floor did not sound like a substitute for actually cleaning it.
A larger home exposed the weakness in that logic. A few minutes of sweeping was no longer the whole job, especially with a cat, more floor area and multiple rooms. The relevant question was not whether a robot could clean every surface perfectly. It was whether it could keep the frequently used areas acceptably clean between proper manual cleanings.

That is where the newer ECOVACS machines are different. The T80 OMNI and X9 PRO OMNI combine mapping, scheduled cleaning, obstacle recognition, automated dust collection, water management and mop washing and drying. The result feels less like buying a gadget that occasionally bumps around the room and more like adding a low-maintenance cleaning routine.
What changed since the early robot vacuums?
The biggest improvement is not one headline specification. It is the convenience stack working together:
- The robot maps rooms and can clean selected areas on a schedule.
- The station automatically empties the dustbin.
- It can refill clean water and collect dirty water.
- The mop is washed and dried at the station.
- Room-specific controls let you target kitchens, hallways or other high-traffic areas.
- Obstacle-recognition systems help it navigate around furniture and everyday objects.
- Cleaning histories and logs show where and when it has worked.
- Smart-home integrations and voice controls can start cleaning without opening the app.
That automation changes the ownership experience. The machine can clean frequently without requiring a person to get out a vacuum, fill a bucket or wash a mop after every run. It is still not maintenance-free, but the routine work is substantially reduced.
Vacuuming: effective maintenance, not a full replacement
Both robots were good at the work I wanted most: removing dust and small particles from hard floors and maintaining carpets between deeper cleaning sessions. The floors felt cleaner underfoot, and regular runs helped reduce visible cat dander and everyday debris.
In the original review, the robots covered roughly 90% of the home and nearly all of the frequently walked areas. That is a personal estimate from one home—not a standardized measurement—but it captures the practical benefit. A robot does not have to reach every square inch to make a noticeable difference if it repeatedly handles the areas people use most.

Automated dock functions keep T50 MAX PRO ready for its next cleaning cycle with less everyday upkeep.
Carpets were also maintained well, although neither machine should be treated as an upright vacuum. A person can aim a powerful vacuum at a particular patch, work more deeply into dense carpet and clean stairs or furniture. The robots are better at repeated general upkeep than targeted extraction.

Edges and corners remain the weak spots. Baseboard heaters, unusual wall shapes and awkward furniture can leave narrow strips untouched. Cat hair can gather in those missed areas, and a heavily soiled or hairy section may need more than one pass—or a manual vacuum altogether.
The mopping was the surprise
The roller mop changed my opinion more than I expected. Used frequently, it picked up the fine residue and everyday marks that vacuuming leaves behind. Its value comes from repetition: a light clean performed regularly can prevent floors from reaching the point where they need a major scrubbing session.
That does not make it a replacement for a traditional mop or steam mop. Sticky spills, deep grime, dried stains and moisture-sensitive surfaces still require judgment and often manual work. Floor compatibility also matters, as do rugs, tassels and transitions between floor materials.
The right expectation is automated floor maintenance, not guaranteed stain removal or deep scrubbing. Within that limit, the system makes mopping much easier to keep up with.
ECOVACS T80 OMNI versus X9 PRO OMNI
The two models overlap considerably, so the practical distinction is more important than simply choosing the one with the larger number. On August 16, 2026, ECOVACS’ US store listed the T80 OMNI at $399 and the X9 PRO OMNI at $499. Those were observed promotional prices, not permanent prices or universal pricing outside the US.

| Listed height | 98mm | 98mm |
| Obstacle detection | AIVI 3D | AIVI 3D 3.0 |
ECOVACS’ listed specifications are manufacturer data, not directly comparable independent test scores. Pa ratings, airflow claims and mopping-pressure figures should not be treated as a guarantee of household performance. The T80 OMNI product page lists 18,000Pa suction, a 20mm obstacle-crossing capability, a 10mm brush lift, carpet-first cleaning, AIVI 3D detection, temperature-controlled mop washing and 45°C hot-air drying. The X9 PRO OMNI product page lists BLAST suction technology, 3,700Pa mopping pressure, up to 220rpm roller speed, TruEdge 2.0 edge cleaning, AIVI 3D 3.0 and 63°C hot-air drying.
The X9’s most meaningful practical advantage is its ability to lift the mop apparatus for carpet cleaning. That is more flexible than simply cleaning carpets first. However, in this particular home, the T80’s carpet-first approach worked well enough that the premium feature was not essential. The original reviewer found the T80 sufficient for his needs; that is a personal conclusion, not a universal ranking.
The app is powerful, but not effortless
The app offers the controls expected from a modern robot cleaner: editable maps, detailed schedules, room-specific cleaning, remote control, cleaning history and logs. Voice control can also work through Apple, Google or Alexa ecosystems, depending on the setup and region.
The trade-off is complexity. There are many settings, and some are not explained as clearly as they could be. The review also questioned why AIVI 3D appeared as a feature toggle rather than being presented through a simpler, more explicit explanation of camera-based obstacle recognition and privacy.
That matters for buyers who dislike apps, cloud-connected appliances or indoor cameras. More controls do not automatically create a simpler experience. Before buying, check what the current app offers in your country and whether the privacy controls match your comfort level.

Where the robots still fall short
Rug tassels and loose materials
Tasselled rugs can intermittently jam the robot. In practice, the solution was to tuck the tassels underneath before cleaning. Cables, socks, toys and loose threads can create similar problems.
Corners and irregular edges
Edge-cleaning systems help, but furniture, heaters and unusual room geometry still create missed strips. You will occasionally need a handheld vacuum or broom.

Pet hair
Regular cleaning can reduce loose hair and dander, but it does not guarantee complete removal from corners or dense carpet. A robot is especially useful for preventing buildup, not for eliminating every trace after it accumulates.
Thresholds and rugs
The T80 is listed with 20mm obstacle-crossing capability, but actual results depend on the threshold, rug construction, angle and floor conditions. Measure transitions rather than assuming the headline figure will cover every doorway.
Consumables and station care
The station removes daily chores but introduces ongoing ownership costs. You still need to manage dust bags, filters, brushes, roller mops and cleaning solution, as well as the dirty-water system. ECOVACS’ US listings observed in August 2026 showed a T80 accessory kit at $104.97, an X9 PRO cleaning kit at $154.95, antibacterial dust bags at $24.99 and a T80-compatible roller mop at $33.99. These are time-sensitive prices, not an annual cost estimate; replacement frequency depends on usage, pets, floor area and manufacturer guidance.

Who should buy one?
A T80 OMNI-type machine makes the most sense when routine dust and dander reduction matter more than perfect deep cleaning, the home has mostly hard floors or manageable carpet, and carpet-first cleaning is acceptable. It is the more persuasive value choice when the objective is to automate regular maintenance at the lowest observed price of the two.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →An X9 PRO OMNI-type machine is easier to justify in a home with a mix of hard floors and carpet where mop lifting, more advanced obstacle handling and premium edge-cleaning features matter. It is also the better fit for buyers who specifically want more adaptive carpet and mop behavior and are willing to accept additional complexity.
Consider a different category if the home has many thresholds, tasselled rugs, narrow spaces or clutter; if perfect corner cleaning is the priority; or if you dislike apps, cameras, voice assistants and recurring consumables. A cordless stick vacuum remains better for stairs, furniture, corners and quick spot cleaning. An upright or canister vacuum is better for deep carpet work, while a manual or steam mop remains better for sticky residue and intensive scrubbing.
Before buying
- Measure furniture clearance. Both reviewed models are listed at 98mm tall, but approach angles and surrounding space also matter.
- Measure thresholds and inspect rugs, especially tasselled or loose-weave designs.
- Decide whether carpet-first cleaning is enough or whether you specifically need automatic mop lifting.
- Check camera and AI obstacle-detection privacy controls.
- Confirm local availability, electrical compatibility, warranty, return policy and replacement-part supply.
- Budget for dust bags, filters, brushes, rollers and cleaning fluid—not only the initial robot price.
- Do not choose solely from Pa ratings or manufacturer coverage percentages.
The verdict
Modern robot vacuums can convert a skeptic when judged as automated maintenance cleaners rather than autonomous replacements for every cleaning tool. The T80 OMNI and X9 PRO OMNI made the biggest difference through consistency: they kept most frequently used areas cleaner with less intervention.
For this reviewer’s home, the T80 OMNI delivered enough of the benefit that the X9 PRO OMNI’s premium features were not essential. The X9 is more flexible, particularly around carpet and mop lifting, but the T80’s lower-cost carpet-first workflow was sufficient. Neither eliminates manual cleaning—and both demand some preparation and maintenance—but they make the routine work considerably easier.
