To winterize pots and planters, protect the plant’s roots and the container separately: move vulnerable planted pots to suitable shelter or insulate them outdoors, and empty and store unused pots that may crack in freezing weather. Keep drainage open and check soil moisture during winter.

First decide whether the pot is planted or empty

A planted pot raises two questions: can the plant survive the local winter with its roots exposed above ground, and can the container withstand freezing and thawing? Roots in pots are more exposed to cold than roots in the ground because the surrounding soil mass is smaller. Some pot materials also absorb water that can freeze and crack them. The University of Illinois Extension explains these risks in Overwintering Plants in Containers and Overwintering potted plants.

If the pot is empty

Empty unused pots made from vulnerable materials, let them dry where appropriate, and store them under cover. Illinois Extension recommends storing many containers upside-down so they do not collect snow and debris. Its guidance that large concrete and wooden planters can remain filled through winter applies to northern Illinois; it is not a guarantee for every region, planter design, or exposure.

If the pot contains a plant

Identify the plant and check its cold hardiness for your area before leaving it outdoors. Illinois Extension’s advice to choose plants hardy two zones colder than the local zone is guidance for central Illinois, not a universal rule. Use local conditions and plant-specific recommendations rather than applying that margin everywhere.

Choose where the planted pot will spend winter

Move vulnerable plants to suitable shelter

Where practical, move a vulnerable container to a protected place such as an unheated garage, shed, basement, greenhouse, or cold frame. Oregon State University Extension lists protected locations that stay above freezing; Nevada Extension recommends sheltering small or thin-walled pots in an unheated garage and grouping outdoor containers in a wind-protected spot near the house. Match the shelter to the plant: a warm indoor room is not automatically suitable for every species.

Leave hardy plants outside in a sheltered position

If the plant can tolerate local winter conditions and the pot can withstand them, place the container somewhere protected from wind. Grouping pots can help shelter them, but it does not make a tender plant hardy or remove the need to protect exposed roots. Consider the plant, the region’s winter severity, and the container’s material, size, and condition together.

Insulate containers that must remain outdoors

For a suitable plant that needs to stay outside, wrap or insulate the container to help protect its exposed roots. NC State Extension lists frost blanket, bubble wrap, closed-cell foam, quilt batting, household insulation, and blankets. Oregon State Extension also lists straw, leaves, burlap, woven row cover, plastic, and bubble wrap. Choose materials appropriate to local conditions and keep drainage clear; insulation can help, but it is not a guarantee against severe cold.

Check the pot material and drainage

Give extra attention to porous containers

Unglazed ceramic and terracotta absorb water and are especially vulnerable to cracking when that water freezes. Advice about wood, plastic, and concrete varies by source, planter size and construction, region, and exposure. For example, NC State Extension describes wood and plastic as materials that can remain outdoors year-round, while Illinois Extension’s advice about large concrete and wooden planters staying filled is specific to northern Illinois. Treat material as one factor in the decision, not proof that a pot is freeze-proof.

Keep water moving through the container

Clear drainage holes and avoid leaving pots standing in water. Rutgers New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station recommends raising pots on pot feet or bricks to improve drainage and air circulation. Penn State Extension advises that plastic and metal pots left outside need plenty of drainage holes. Risers help with drainage and airflow; they do not insulate a pot.

Manage moisture through winter

Overwintering plants still need moisture, but there is no reliable universal watering schedule: how quickly a pot dries depends on the weather, shelter, plant, potting mix, and container. NC State Extension advises checking the mix periodically and watering dry containers when temperatures are expected to be above freezing. Oregon State Extension advises against watering at or below freezing. Illinois Extension recommends watering potted perennials well before winter and checking them during winter, with particular attention to evergreens. Avoid both waterlogged soil and letting overwintering plants dry out completely.

Compare the main winterizing options

Option Useful when Trade-offs and cautions
Move to protected shelter The plant or pot is vulnerable and suitable space is available. Choose a location that suits the plant; an unheated garage may suit some dormant hardy plants, but needs vary by species.
Leave outside in a sheltered or grouped position The plant is hardy enough and the container can tolerate local winter conditions. Wind protection and grouping can help, but do not eliminate the need to consider root hardiness and drainage.
Wrap or insulate the pot A suitable plant must remain outdoors in an exposed container. Choose locally appropriate material, maintain drainage, and do not treat wrapping as a guarantee against severe cold.
Empty and store the pot The pot is unused or its material is vulnerable to freezing and thawing. Store it under cover; many containers can be turned upside-down to reduce collection of snow and debris.

There is no single best method for every garden. The choice depends on plant hardiness and local winter severity, pot material and condition, drainage, and whether suitable shelter is available.
