Keep the mix moist but not soggy; check the soil instead of watering by a fixed weekly schedule.
How to water a Chinese evergreen
- Check the mix. Press a finger into the soil, especially the top 1–2 inches. Water if that layer is dry; if it feels cool and damp, wait and check again. Clemson Cooperative Extension recommends this approach, and UF/IFAS Gardening Solutions also advises checking the top inch.
- Use room-temperature water. Avoid very hot or cold water, as Clemson Extension advises.
- Water thoroughly. Apply enough water for it to pass through the pot’s drainage holes. Empty the saucer or outer pot rather than leaving the plant standing in drainage water. Purdue Extension’s indoor-plant guidance recommends discarding excess drainage water.
Clemson Extension’s factsheet, revised October 3, 2025, says to “Keep the soil constantly moist but not too wet.” Its quick guide also says to let the top 1–2 inches dry before watering. In practice, aim for a balance: let the surface layer dry, but do not allow the whole root zone to become persistently dry or remain saturated.
How often should you water?
There is no reliable universal interval such as once a week. How quickly the mix dries depends on the conditions around the plant, so use the soil check each time rather than the calendar. NC State Extension advises keeping the mix moist from spring through fall and reducing watering in winter. Continue to check the soil in every season; slower growth and drying in winter often mean watering less often.
Pot and soil drainage
Choose a pot with drainage holes and a potting mix that drains readily. Clemson Extension recommends a standard soilless mix with extra humus and warns that slow drainage or overwatering can contribute to root rot. If water remains in the saucer or cachepot after watering, pour it away rather than letting the pot sit in it.

What yellow or damaged leaves can tell you
Yellow leaves
Yellowing can result from too much water, but it does not prove that overwatering is the cause. UF/IFAS Ask IFAS identifies overwatering as a concern, while Purdue Extension notes that both too much and too little water can yellow and drop leaves. Check the mix below the surface and confirm that water can drain before changing your routine.
Persistently wet soil or suspected root rot
Let the mix dry between waterings, confirm the pot has drainage holes, and empty standing water. Clemson Extension links root rot with overwatering or a mix that drains too slowly; NC State Extension also warns that overwatering can cause root rot.

Dry or damaged leaves
Do not automatically add water when leaves look dry or damaged. Check the soil first: both excess and insufficient water can harm roots and impede growth, according to Clemson Extension. Light, temperature, and drafts may also affect the plant.

Chinese evergreens include many species and cultivars, and their conditions vary. Clemson Extension notes that solid-green cultivars can grow in low light, while variegated types need low to moderate indirect light. UF/IFAS says high-color selections need bright indirect light to retain their color. These differences do not establish a fixed watering interval, so continue to judge watering by the mix.
