Wash a weighted blanket only by the method allowed on its care label or product manual. A removable cover may be washable even when the weighted insert is not. Check the instructions for each part, confirm that your washer can handle an approved machine-wash load, and use only a permitted drying method.
Start with the blanket’s care instructions
Weighted blankets vary in their fabric, fill, weight, and construction, so there is no universally safe water temperature, wash cycle, or cleaning method. Read the care label and product manual before cleaning; follow those product-specific directions over general advice. Appliance manuals matter too if machine washing is allowed. Sleep Foundation’s guide and Maytag’s laundry guidance both direct readers to check the relevant care instructions.
Check the cover and insert separately
If your blanket has a removable cover, take it off and check its label. The cover and weighted insert may have different care rules: Tempur-Pedic, for example, says its insert is spot-clean-only while its removable cover can be washed according to the cover’s instructions. Tempur-Pedic’s guidance illustrates why it is important not to assume that instructions for one part apply to the other.
A cover can also help limit direct contact with the insert and make routine cleaning simpler, but it does not change the insert’s care requirements. IKEA recommends a duvet cover for its ODONVIDE weighted blanket. The ODONVIDE manual gives product-specific instructions.

Choose a cleaning method the label permits
Spot-clean a small stain
If the product instructions allow spot cleaning, treat a small mark rather than washing the entire blanket. Use a gentle cleaner and a soft cloth or brush, then remove cleaner residue as directed. Prompt treatment may help prevent a stain from setting. Sleep Foundation and Maytag describe spot cleaning as an option, but the product’s own instructions determine what is suitable for your blanket.
Hand-wash only when instructed
If hand washing is permitted, general expert guidance suggests using a clean bathtub, cool or tepid water, and gentle detergent, then rinsing until the water runs clear and suds are gone. Do not use this as a substitute for a product manual: IKEA’s ODONVIDE instructions prohibit machine washing and specify hand washing. The manual states, “You can wash the weighted blanket by hand, not in the washing machine.” That direction applies to the ODONVIDE model, not to weighted blankets generally.

Machine-wash only with product and appliance approval
Use a washing machine only if the blanket’s instructions allow it and the appliance’s capacity is adequate for the load. For blankets that qualify, Sleep Foundation and Maytag describe gentle cycles with cool or cold water. Maytag discusses commercial laundry appliances for heavier loads and gives guidance for blankets weighing 20 pounds or less, but that general advice is not permission to machine-wash a particular blanket. Check both the blanket’s care instructions and the washer manual; do not force a heavy, waterlogged blanket into a home machine that cannot handle it.
Dry it by an approved method, then wait
Follow the product instructions for drying. Some blankets allow low-heat tumble drying; others call for air drying. When flat air drying is permitted, spread the blanket out and redistribute the fill as it dries. A drying rack may help if it can safely support the blanket’s wet weight. Do not use a drying method simply because it is convenient, and do not put the blanket back into use until it is completely dry. Sleep Foundation, Maytag, IKEA, and Tempur-Pedic describe different drying directions for different products, underscoring the need to follow the instructions for your own blanket.

Decide how often to wash based on use
There is no single established washing schedule for every weighted blanket. Recommendations vary by source and use: Sleep Foundation suggests washing every few weeks for nightly use and three to four times a year for occasional use; Maytag says biweekly washing may benefit a blanket used nightly without a cover. Laundry experts quoted by Martha Stewart suggest monthly or biweekly washing when a blanket touches skin nightly or a pet sleeps on it, and less often when a duvet cover separates it from the user. These are recommendations, not findings from a measured study. Consider how often the blanket is used, whether it is covered, whether it is soiled, and what its care instructions allow.
