You can admire the Chrysler Building from the sidewalk, and a visitor guide updated in April 2026 reports that you can also enter its Art Deco lobby for free on weekdays, approximately 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The upper floors and crown are not open to the public, and there is no operating public observatory. Because lobby hours are reported by a secondary source rather than building management, confirm access before you go.

What can visitors see inside the Chrysler Building?

The practical visit is limited to the building’s exterior and, when open, its lobby. It is an occupied office building, not a public attraction with a tower tour.

  • Exterior: The Chrysler Building is at 405 Lexington Avenue at East 42nd Street in Midtown Manhattan. You can view and photograph its distinctive Art Deco crown from nearby streets.
  • Lobby: New York Welcome’s visitor guide, updated in April 2026, reports free weekday entry without a ticket or reservation during approximate hours of 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The guide lists the lobby as closed on weekends and public holidays. Treat this schedule as provisional and check before traveling; entry practices can change.
  • Upper floors and crown: These are not reported as publicly accessible. There is no operating public observatory.

If you enter the lobby, keep the visit brief and respectful of people working in the building.

How do you get to the Chrysler Building?

The address is 405 Lexington Avenue at East 42nd Street. The visitor guide identifies Grand Central–42nd Street as the nearest subway stop, a short walk away. Subway routes and service can change, so check current MTA trip information on the day of your visit.

Can you take a tour or visit an observatory?

Guided architecture walks

The building does not offer official tours. Some independent New York architecture walks reportedly include an exterior stop and lobby visit, but routes and access arrangements vary. Confirm with the operator that the tour runs on your chosen date and whether it enters the lobby; do not assume lobby access is included.

Proposed 61st-floor observatory

A visitor guide reports that a 61st-floor observatory plan was approved in 2020, but construction had not begun by its April 2026 update, and no opening date was reported. Approval is not current visitor access, so do not plan a trip around the proposal.

The building’s former 71st-floor “Celestial” observatory closed in 1945, according to the same guide.

Views of the Chrysler Building from another deck

For an elevated view that includes the Chrysler Building, the guide names Summit One Vanderbilt, Top of the Rock, and the Empire State Building. These are separate attractions; check each venue directly for current admission, schedules, and ticket conditions.

Why is the Chrysler Building notable?

Its construction history helps explain why visitors seek it out, even though public access is limited. The building’s official history says Walter P. Chrysler acquired the property in 1928 for $2 million and hired architect William Van Alen. Construction began in 1929 and finished in 1930. The official account gives the building’s height as 1,048 feet, including a 125-foot steel spire, and says it won the “Race to the Sky” and held the title of world’s tallest building until 1931.

Those height and chronology details come from the Chrysler Building’s official history. The practical visitor details above come from New York Welcome’s visitor guide, updated April 2026, so verify operational access close to your visit.
