“Not recyclable” often means “not accepted in your curbside cart.” Rules vary by U.S. community and its recycling facility, and many materials have separate drop-off or take-back options. The EPA’s practical rule is: “Do not put items in your recycling bin unless you know they are accepted.” Check your local program’s accepted-material list before putting an unfamiliar item in the bin. A plastic resin code alone does not mean your local program accepts the item.

23 common curbside trouble spots

These are examples of items that often need a different route from household curbside recycling—not a universal list of materials no one can recycle. Your local provider’s instructions control. Some items below can be recovered through dedicated programs; others need careful disposal or are recyclable only when clean and in suitable condition.

  1. Plastic shopping bags

Loose bags generally do not belong in curbside recycling because plastic film can tangle processing equipment. Some retailers collect bags separately; check for a participating location and its accepted materials.

  2. Plastic wrap and other film

Plastic wrap and similar film are commonly handled apart from curbside recycling. Look for a retail film drop-off or local collection instructions rather than putting film loose in the cart.

  3. Foam packaging

Very few localities accept expanded polystyrene foam in curbside recycling, according to EPA consumer guidance. Check local drop-off or disposal rules; a recycling symbol is not proof of curbside acceptance.

  4. Plastic utensils

EPA’s general guidance lists plastic utensils among items that cannot be recycled in its common-recyclables stream. Follow local trash or reuse guidance.

  5. Compostable or bio-based plastic

Compostable plastics are not intended for conventional plastics recycling and can disrupt that stream. Use an organics program only if it explicitly accepts the product; otherwise follow local disposal instructions.

  6. Electronics, including phones, computers, and televisions

Electronics generally are not curbside recyclables. EPA points to collection sites, manufacturer or retailer take-back programs, and local facilities as possible routes. Before handing over a device, remove personal data and verify the program accepts it.

  7. Clothing, shoes, and linens

Textiles generally do not belong in curbside recycling. Donate wearable items or check for a local textile collection or store program; availability and accepted condition vary.

  8. Rechargeable and lithium batteries

Keep batteries requiring special handling out of municipal recycling. EPA identifies dedicated retail bins and household hazardous-waste events as collection options for lithium-ion batteries. Follow the local program’s handling directions.

  9. Lead-acid vehicle batteries

Do not place these in household trash or municipal recycling. Return them to a battery retailer or ask your local household hazardous-waste program about its route.

  11. Paint, solvents, pesticides, and similar chemicals

These products may require household hazardous-waste handling. Ask local waste officials about collection events, permanent facilities, or—where offered—reuse options for paint. Do not pour chemicals down a drain.

Paper for recycling should generally be clean and dry; wet or food-soiled paper may be better suited to an organics program. Check whether your local program accepts the specific item.

  15. Disposable diapers

Dirty disposable diapers do not belong in recycling. EPA’s general advice is to flush excrement and put the diaper in the trash; follow local sanitation guidance.

  16. Garden hoses

Hoses are among EPA’s examples of items not to put in curbside recycling. Keep them out of the cart and check local bulky-waste or reuse options.

  17. Sewing needles and syringes

Many coated gift wraps are not recyclable because of their finish. Check local rules, and reuse gift bags, boxes, or tissue when practical.

Tires do not belong in curbside recycling. EPA says many garages must accept used tires when installing new ones, and local collection events may also be available. Confirm the route before delivery.

Before putting packaging in the recycling cart

  • Check acceptance first. Local programs decide which materials and formats they can process. A resin identification code does not establish that a plastic item is accepted.
  • Keep recyclables in suitable condition. EPA generally recommends empty, rinsed plastic, metal, and glass containers, and clean, dry paper. Follow local preparation rules.
  • Separate food from packaging. Remove food scraps from pizza boxes and flatten them if your local program accepts them. Compost scraps only where permitted.
  • Keep hazardous and sharp items out of the cart. Batteries, chemicals, sharps, and broken bulbs need instructions from the local waste authority, not a guess based on the recycling symbol.

How to find the right route

Start with your municipality or recycling provider’s accepted-material list. For a curbside rejection, look for a named alternative—such as a retail take-back, collection site, transfer station, or household hazardous-waste event—and confirm that it accepts your exact item and condition. Routes and availability vary by location.

The EPA’s national figures illustrate why separate routes matter, but they are historical rather than current rates: the agency reported that the United States generated more than 35 million tons of plastics and recycled 8.7% in 2018. EPA also reported 2.7 million tons of consumer electronics generated and 38.5% recycled in 2018. Those figures describe the stated national categories and year; they do not tell you what your local cart accepts.
