For a tiny-house kitchen, capture cooking moisture at the stove with a range hood ducted outdoors, and give the exhaust air a deliberate path to be replaced. A hood’s fan rating alone does not guarantee effective capture: duct layout, installed resistance, make-up air, climate, and local code all matter. A kitchen hood handles cooking at its source; it does not automatically provide whole-house ventilation.
Put exhaust at the cooking source
Cooking releases moisture and odors in a concentrated area. A hood positioned over the cooktop can capture them more directly than relying on leaks or general room ventilation. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center recommends kitchen point exhaust for cooking moisture and odors, regardless of the home’s broader ventilation system (Kitchen Exhaust Fans).
For moisture removal, the key distinction is where the air goes. A ducted hood carries kitchen air outside. A ductless, recirculating hood returns filtered air to the room; it is not equivalent to outdoor exhaust and does not remove cooking moisture from the house. The 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) requires domestic cooking exhaust to discharge outdoors through a duct, while allowing a conditional exception for listed ductless hoods installed as directed when mechanical or natural ventilation is otherwise provided. Whether that code applies depends on local adoption, amendments, and project circumstances (2024 IRC, Chapter 15).
Choose airflow for the installed duct, not just the fan label
Published fan airflow can be a free-air figure. Once air has to move through a duct, bends, and a termination, resistance can reduce delivered flow. Select equipment for its expected performance under realistic installed conditions and follow the hood manufacturer’s instructions. Building America ventilation guidance discusses 0.25 in. w.c. as a useful selection condition for exhaust fans because duct runs can have greater pressure drop than the commonly listed 0.1 in. w.c.; this is general fan-selection guidance, not a universal kitchen-hood rating requirement (Whole-House Ventilation Strategies for New Homes).

The Building America guide describes local exhaust values in the 2015 IRC of 100 cfm intermittent or 25 cfm continuous. The 2024 IRC search result reports the same values in its local exhaust table. These are code figures, not a guarantee that a particular hood will capture emissions effectively in every kitchen. Use the applicable locally adopted edition and assess the fan’s performance with its actual duct arrangement.
Route and seal the duct carefully
Duct details affect airflow and help prevent unwanted air movement or leakage into the building. The 2024 IRC specifies a smooth interior surface, an airtight duct, a backdraft damper, and an independent kitchen exhaust duct. Building America guidance recommends rigid metal duct sized for the installation, with few bends. Keep the route as short and straight as practical, seal joints, fit the required damper, and discharge outdoors—not into an attic, crawlspace, or another interior space. Follow local code and the appliance instructions.

- One-Handed Loading - Keep one hand free with a 1/4 in. hex chuck that accepts 1 in. bit tips
- Power drill cordless with 1/2" single sleeve ratcheting chuck provides tight bit gripping strength, making bit changes faster and more secure
Provide a replacement-air path
An exhaust fan removes air; it does not supply fresh air in its place. In a tight tiny house, the fan may not work as intended if replacement air has no route into the kitchen. Plan an inlet or another suitable path, which may include an opened door or window when conditions allow. New Zealand Building Performance explains this general airflow principle in its active ventilation guidance; it is not a U.S. code requirement.
Consider pressure interactions if the house has combustion appliances or other exhaust equipment. Exhaust can affect how air moves through a small, airtight building. Where combustion appliances are present, have a qualified professional assess the design rather than assuming a window or passive leak will make the arrangement safe.

Keep kitchen exhaust separate from whole-house ventilation
A hood is local exhaust for cooking. Whole-house ventilation is intended to provide broader air exchange, and one system does not automatically replace the other. The 2021 International Tiny House Provisions compilation says tiny houses meeting its specified airtightness limit must have whole-house mechanical ventilation. The exact threshold, applicability, and enforcement depend on the adopted code text and local rules; confirm these with the authority having jurisdiction before applying the provision to a project (2021 International Tiny House Provisions, Chapter 11).
Adjust moisture control to climate and season
Ventilation can help control indoor moisture during heating conditions, but the right approach changes in hot or humid weather. Outdoor-air exchange may bring more moisture indoors during cooling conditions, so air conditioning’s dehumidification and control of moisture at its source can matter. Building Science Corporation’s guidance treats relative-humidity figures as climate- and season-specific, not as one target for every tiny house (BSD-012: Moisture Control for New Residential Buildings).

- For cold-climate heating periods, the 2009 guidance gives 30% or lower relative humidity at 70°F (21.1°C).
- For mixed-climate heating periods, it gives 40% or lower at 70°F (21.1°C).
- For cooling periods in mixed climates, it gives 60% or lower at 75°F (23.8°C).
These are Building Science Corporation’s climate-specific guidance figures, not universal setpoints or code requirements. A hygrometer can help you monitor indoor conditions, but it does not remove moisture. Avoid treating one humidity number as appropriate regardless of climate, season, or building conditions.

| Option | Moisture destination | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Ducted range hood | Exhausts captured kitchen air outdoors when correctly installed. | Capture at the cooktop, delivered airflow under duct resistance, duct route and sealing, backdraft damper, replacement-air path, noise, power, and local requirements. |
| Ductless recirculating hood | Returns air to the room; it does not exhaust cooking moisture outdoors. | Whether the model is listed and installed as directed, and whether other ventilation meets applicable code. The 2024 IRC exception is conditional. |
| Open window with an over-stove recirculating fan | The window may provide replacement air, but the recirculating fan is not outdoor kitchen exhaust. | Do not treat this arrangement as equivalent to a ducted hood for removing moist kitchen air from the house. |
There is no single hood size or airflow target established for every tiny house. The suitable choice depends on the cooking setup, capture design, installed duct, replacement-air strategy, climate, and applicable code.
