Before applying it, check that your specific pesticide product’s label allows use against the ant species and at the garden site you have in mind. Moisture from rain, irrigation, or dew can also limit its effectiveness.
Does diatomaceous earth kill ants in a garden?
It can kill individual ants that contact the dust while it is dry. DE acts on the insect’s outer body: it scrapes the surface and removes protective oils and fats, contributing to dehydration. It is a contact dust, not a poison that travels through the colony. The University of Minnesota Extension explains how it works.
Whether you may use a particular DE product in a garden depends on its label. A label permitting outdoor ant treatment at a foundation, patio, or ant trail does not automatically permit dusting garden beds, edible plants, or all garden soil.
Check the product label before applying
Use a pesticide product labeled for the intended ant and site; “food grade” DE is not interchangeable with a pesticide labeled for that use. Check the label for the target pest, permitted outdoor locations, site or crop restrictions, application directions, frequency, and protective measures.

For example, the EPA-accepted label dated August 4, 2023, for Concern Diatomaceous Earth Crawling Insect Killer (EPA Reg. No. 50932-12) gives outdoor directions for ants other than carpenter, fire, harvester, and pharaoh ants. It lists locations such as patios, window and door frames, outdoor sills, foundations, ant trails, and areas around sewer pipes and drains. It directs users to apply a light amount where listed pests occur, using a hand duster, power duster, or similar equipment, no more than once a week. These directions apply to that product only; they do not authorize a blanket application to garden soil or edible plants. See the EPA Concern product label and EPA registration listing.
Apply only where and how the label allows
- Identify the ant and treatment site. Do not assume the product covers every ant species or every outdoor location. The example label above excludes four ant groups and names specific sites.
- Read the complete label. Confirm the site, pest, application method, frequency, precautions, and any restrictions that apply to plants or food crops.
- Apply a light dusting only as directed. If the label permits the site and pest, use the listed application equipment, such as a hand or power duster. Do not improvise a garden-wide application.
- Observe the label’s reapplication limit. Weather exposure does not override the product’s stated frequency. For the cited Concern label, the limit is no more than once a week.
Expect reduced performance in wet or humid conditions
DE works best when dry and uncompacted. Rain, watering, and dew can reduce its effectiveness; Minnesota Extension advises reapplication after those exposures, subject to the product label. That advice does not permit applying more often than the label allows. Minnesota Extension also notes that studies have found little effect in some humid environments.

Outdoor results can therefore be limited even when DE kills ants on contact. UF/IFAS Extension describes DE as impractical for outdoor insects in the evaluations it cites, in part because it must remain completely dry. The UF/IFAS guidance supports treating it as a limited contact option, not a reliable garden-wide solution.
Will it get rid of the whole colony?
Do not count on DE alone to eliminate an outdoor colony. Delaware Cooperative Extension says organic controls including DE have not been found to effectively eliminate the plant-damaging ant colonies discussed in its fact sheet. Oklahoma State University notes that DE can kill some ants but is less effective in moist soil and rarely eliminates fire-ant colonies by itself. Those cautions do not mean DE never kills ants; they distinguish contact kills from dependable colony control.

If the colony is damaging plants or creating a persistent problem, use an approach specifically labeled for that ant and site. The available guidance supports DE’s limitations but does not establish a universally best alternative.

Follow the label’s precautions, first-aid directions, and storage and disposal instructions for the product in hand. The cited EPA label says to avoid breathing the dust and getting it in the eyes, and to keep the product out of reach of children and pets. Apply it in a way that avoids creating airborne dust.
