Yes—but the dependable setup is wired at the stereo end: phone or tablet → Bluetooth → Echo Dot → 3.5 mm audio cable → AUX or line input on the home audio system.
This works when your Echo Dot can receive Bluetooth audio and has a 3.5 mm audio output. Do not assume that every Echo Dot has the required jack, or that the Dot can act as a universal Bluetooth-to-Bluetooth bridge.

What “Bluetooth receiver” means in this setup
An Echo Dot can receive audio from a Bluetooth phone, tablet, or other compatible source and play that audio as a Bluetooth speaker. Amazon documents phone-to-Echo pairing and also documents connecting an Echo to an external speaker by Bluetooth or cable. Those are separate functions.

Bluetooth source → Echo Dot → analog audio cable → stereo line input
A setup in which the Dot receives Bluetooth audio from your phone and simultaneously sends it wirelessly to another Bluetooth receiver should not be promised as a general Echo Dot feature. Amazon’s support documentation does not establish simultaneous Bluetooth input and Bluetooth output for every Dot model and software version.
What you need
- An Echo Dot with a 3.5 mm audio output.
- A phone, tablet, or computer that can transmit Bluetooth audio.
- A 3.5 mm stereo cable, or a 3.5 mm-to-RCA cable.
- A stereo receiver, amplifier, AV receiver, powered speaker system, or similar equipment with an analog line-level input.
- The Echo Dot’s power adapter.
- The Alexa app for initial Echo setup and Bluetooth management.
A 3.5 mm-to-3.5 mm cable is suitable when both devices have 3.5 mm sockets. If the stereo has red and white RCA inputs, use a 3.5 mm-to-RCA stereo cable.
Check whether your Echo Dot has an audio output
Inspect the back or side of the Dot for a 3.5 mm socket. On models that include it, the socket is an audio output—not an AUX input. Amazon’s original Echo Dot quick-start guide labels the connection “AUX audio output,” and Amazon described line-out and external-speaker support for the Echo Dot in its 2018 device announcement.
Older Echo Dot generations commonly included this output, but model generations differ. Check the physical device and the specifications for your exact model before buying a cable. A cable cannot add an audio output to a Dot that does not have one.

Connect the Echo Dot to the stereo
- Turn the stereo or receiver off.
- Plug the 3.5 mm end of the cable into the Echo Dot’s audio-output jack.
- Connect the other end to the stereo’s AUX, LINE IN, CD, TAPE, or comparable analog input.
- Turn the stereo on and select the input used by the cable.
- Set the receiver volume low before starting playback.
With RCA connections, insert the red and white plugs into a normal left/right analog line input. Do not use PHONO; that input applies different gain and equalization. Do not connect the Dot to speaker-output terminals, a microphone input, or another powered output.
Set up the Echo Dot
If the Dot has not been configured, set it up in the Alexa app and connect it to Wi-Fi. Amazon’s setup guidance uses the Alexa app for screenless Echo devices such as the Echo Dot: Amazon’s Echo setup guide.
Wi-Fi and the Alexa ecosystem are needed for initial setup and Alexa’s online functions. Do not treat the Dot as a simple, guaranteed offline Bluetooth adapter; behavior after a Wi-Fi connection is lost can vary by model and situation.
Pair your phone with the Echo Dot
Using voice pairing
- Turn on Bluetooth on the phone.
- Say, “Alexa, pair.”
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth-device list and select the Echo Dot.
- Wait for the phone to show that the connection is active.
Amazon says this allows the phone to stream music and other audio to the Echo as it would to a Bluetooth speaker: Amazon’s Bluetooth pairing instructions.

Using the Alexa app
- Open the Alexa app.
- Select Devices.
- Select the Echo device.
- Select Device Settings.
- Select Bluetooth Devices.
- Select Pair A New Device.
- Choose your phone when it appears.
Menu wording can vary slightly by Alexa app version, region, or account experience. The current support path is documented by Amazon here.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPlay the phone’s audio through the home system
- Open Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube Music, a podcast app, or another audio app on the phone.
- Start playback.
- Confirm that the phone’s active media-output device is the Echo Dot.
- Confirm that the receiver is set to the correct AUX or line input.
- Raise the receiver volume gradually.
The phone supplies the content and playback controls. The Dot receives the Bluetooth stream and passes it to the connected stereo through its audio output. Bluetooth playback from a phone does not necessarily give Alexa full voice control over every third-party app.
After pairing, nearby devices may reconnect automatically, but this is not guaranteed for every phone. If necessary, say “Alexa, connect to my phone.” To end the connection, say “Alexa, disconnect from Bluetooth.”
Troubleshoot silence or incorrect playback
No sound from the stereo
- Check that the receiver is on the input used by the cable.
- Confirm that the cable is connected to the Dot’s output and a line-level input.
- Raise the phone, Echo, and receiver volume.
- Test the cable with another device.
- Try another suitable analog input.
- Temporarily disconnect any Bluetooth speaker paired with the Dot.
- Restart the Dot by unplugging its power adapter briefly and reconnecting it.
- Start playback only after the phone shows an active Bluetooth connection.
The phone says “connected,” but sound comes from the phone
Open the phone’s media-output selector and explicitly choose the Echo Dot. Then disconnect and reconnect Bluetooth. If that fails, forget the Dot in the phone’s Bluetooth settings and pair it again. Also stop playback in other apps before retrying.
The phone will not pair
- Make sure Bluetooth is enabled and keep the phone near the Dot.
- Say “Alexa, disconnect from Bluetooth” in case another device is connected.
- Remove obsolete Bluetooth pairings in the Alexa app.
- Restart both the phone and Dot.
- Retry through Alexa app → Devices → Echo device → Device Settings → Bluetooth Devices → Pair A New Device.
Can the Dot connect to the stereo wirelessly?
The Dot can send Echo-originated audio to a compatible Bluetooth speaker or external Bluetooth audio device. Separately, it can receive Bluetooth audio from a phone. Those documented directions do not prove that every Echo Dot can receive phone audio and forward it simultaneously to another Bluetooth receiver.

If the stereo already has Bluetooth input, connect the phone directly to the stereo. If it does not, use a dedicated Bluetooth audio receiver connected to the stereo’s AUX or RCA input. That device is designed specifically to convert a phone’s Bluetooth audio into a line-level output.
What if the Dot has no 3.5 mm jack?
Use one of these alternatives:
- Connect the phone directly to a Bluetooth-capable stereo or AV receiver.
- Connect a dedicated Bluetooth audio receiver to the stereo’s analog input.
- Use an Alexa device that officially supports the wired output you need.
- Play an Alexa-compatible music service directly through the Echo.
Do not buy a 3.5 mm cable expecting it to solve a missing hardware output. Echo product availability and features vary by model and market; verify the exact device before purchasing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.TV, computer, and game-console audio
A television or computer may be able to pair with the Dot if it supports Bluetooth audio transmission. A game console may not support the required Bluetooth profile at all. Even when pairing succeeds, Bluetooth latency can make dialogue, video, or game sound noticeably out of sync. Amazon’s general Bluetooth guidance does not guarantee acceptable synchronization for every source: see Amazon’s instructions.
For TV or gaming, a wired connection or a purpose-built low-latency audio solution is usually more suitable than an Echo Dot.

| Setup | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Phone → Dot by Bluetooth → stereo by cable | Owners of a compatible Dot with 3.5 mm output | Requires the cable and Echo setup |
| Phone → Bluetooth-capable stereo | Modern receivers and powered systems | Does not use the Dot |
| Phone → dedicated Bluetooth receiver → stereo | Older stereos with AUX or RCA inputs | Requires an additional device, but is purpose-built for the job |
| Alexa service → Dot → stereo | Alexa-compatible streaming services | Depends on service and account support |
Choose the Echo Dot when you already use Alexa or want its smart-home and voice features. Choose a dedicated Bluetooth audio receiver when your only goal is wireless phone playback through an older stereo; it is generally the simpler architecture.

Frequently asked questions
Can a fifth-generation Echo Dot do this?
Check the exact fifth-generation device for a 3.5 mm audio output before proceeding. Do not assume the jack is present simply because an older Dot had one.
Can I use RCA inputs?
Yes. Use a 3.5 mm-to-RCA stereo cable and connect it to a normal left/right line input, not PHONO.
Can two Bluetooth devices be connected at once?
Do not assume so. The desired phone-to-Dot input plus Dot-to-stereo Bluetooth output is not established as a universal supported bridge. Use the wired Dot output or a dedicated receiver.

Can the Dot’s internal speaker and stereo play together?
Do not rely on simultaneous playback. Output behavior can vary by model, and synchronized playback should be confirmed on the exact Dot and system.
Will Bluetooth audio have a delay?
It can. Delay is usually less troublesome for music but may be obvious with television, films, or games.
Can Alexa control Spotify or YouTube audio played from my phone?
The Dot receives the phone’s Bluetooth audio stream, but Alexa’s controls depend on the phone, app, and service. The phone remains the dependable source and control device.
