Start with the non-negotiable safety rules
Portable heaters concentrate substantial electrical power in a small appliance. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and U.S. Fire Administration (USFA) put placement, direct connection and supervision ahead of convenience. Apply these checks before switching on any unit.
Keep a three-foot clearance
Set the heater at least 3 feet (0.9 metres) from drapes, curtains, furniture, bedding, clothing, paper, cardboard, sawdust and any other material that can burn. Measure from every side where the heater emits heat, not just from its front. Do not place it under a desk, beside a bed, behind a sofa or where a blanket can fall across it. Keep the clearance open for the entire time the heater is operating.

Use a stable, level location
Place the unit on a hard, level surface where it cannot be knocked over. Avoid shelves, boxes, loose rugs, uneven flooring and high-traffic routes. A heater that rocks, has a damaged stand or is likely to be struck should not be used. Never cover the heater or use it to dry clothing.
Connect it directly to the wall
Plug an electric heater directly into a properly installed wall outlet. The CPSC’s wording is explicit: “Plug electric space heaters directly into a wall outlet—never into an extension cord or power strip.” Do not use a multi-plug adaptor, surge strip or extension lead to gain reach. If the cord cannot reach a suitable outlet without an extension, move the heater or have a qualified electrician install an appropriate outlet.
Inspect the appliance and electrical connection
Before each use, look for cracked housing, loose controls, damaged insulation, bent prongs, scorch marks or a plug that does not fit firmly. Keep the cord visible; never run it under a rug or carpet, through a doorway, beneath furniture or where it can be pinched.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Stop immediately if the cord, plug, outlet or wall faceplate becomes hot, discoloured, smells of burning or shows arcing. Disconnect the heater if it can be done safely, stop using that outlet and arrange inspection by a qualified electrician or authorised repair service. A hot cord requires disconnection and authorised inspection or repair. Do not open or improvise repairs on the heater.
Turn it off when unattended
The USFA advises: “Turn space heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.” Do not rely on a thermostat, timer or tip-over switch as permission to leave a heater running while nobody is present. Switch it off, unplug it if the manufacturer instructs you to do so, and allow it to cool before moving or storing it.
Why placement and supervision matter
US figures show why a small appliance deserves the same attention as any other heat source. CPSC estimates an average of 1,600 portable-heater fires, 70 deaths and 150 injuries each year for 2020–2022. That estimate covers portable heaters broadly, including electric space heaters, rather than electric models alone.

USFA reports that portable-heater fires represented 3% of home heating fires but 41% of fatal home heating fires during 2017–2019. Its separate 2021 total—32,200 home heating fires, 190 deaths, 625 injuries and $442 million in property loss—covers all home heating fires, not just portable electric heaters. These statistics are U.S.-specific and do not predict the risk for a particular home, but they explain the emphasis on clearance, direct connection and switching off.

Match output to the space
Look at the heater’s input rating and select enough output for the room without assuming that the largest available unit is best. A higher-wattage heater can warm a space faster but draws more power whenever its element is on. Room size, insulation, outdoor temperature, ceiling height and draughts all affect the required output. If the heater cannot be positioned with the required clearance, it is the wrong choice regardless of its wattage.
Prefer an adjustable thermostat
A thermostat lets the heater stop heating after the room reaches a chosen temperature and restart when the temperature falls. That cycling can reduce average energy use compared with an uncontrolled element that runs continuously. Check that the control is an actual temperature thermostat rather than only a low/high power switch.
Look for independent safety shutoffs
When comparing products, check for tip-over shutoff and overheat protection, clear operating instructions and safety certification recognised in your country. These features are safeguards, not substitutes for supervision or correct placement. Certification marks and electrical requirements differ by jurisdiction, so confirm that the marking applies where you live.
Understand what heater style can and cannot change
Fan, radiant and oil-filled portable heaters use resistance heating. EECA explains that plug-in electric heaters are broadly 100% efficient at converting the electricity they consume into heat. In practical terms, one style does not inherently deliver each unit of heat more cheaply than another. Differences in fan operation, heat distribution, thermostat behaviour, duty cycle, room conditions and tariff can change the bill.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Heater style | What to compare | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Fan heater | Input wattage, thermostat quality, airflow and noise, tip-over and overheat protection | No inherent lower cost per unit of heat |
| Radiant heater | Rated output, directional coverage, guard design and safe clearance | No inherent lower cost per unit of heat |
| Oil-filled radiator | Rated output, thermostat response, surface temperature and mobility | No inherent lower cost per unit of heat |
Compare models under the same room conditions and tariff. A claim that one category is automatically cheaper needs product-specific evidence showing lower energy use for the same delivered warmth.

Set up and operate the heater step by step
- Prepare the room. Remove clothing, paper, bedding, packaging and other combustibles from the heater’s intended area. Make sure the floor is level and the required clearance can remain unobstructed.
- Inspect the unit. Check the housing, controls, plug and entire cord. Do not use a damaged heater, a loose plug or a cord with cuts, crushed sections or exposed conductors.
- Position the heater. Stand it upright on the stable surface, with the air intake and outlet unobstructed. Orient it so people will not walk into it and children or pets cannot pull it over.
- Check the outlet. Use a wall outlet that accepts the plug firmly. Do not share the heater through an extension cord, power strip or adaptor. If the outlet, plug or faceplate becomes hot, switch off and arrange qualified inspection.
- Select the lowest comfortable setting. Set the thermostat or power level for the temperature you actually need. Closing doors to an occupied room can prevent heat from escaping, provided the heater still has ventilation and clearance specified by its instructions.
- Monitor the first cycle. Stay nearby while the heater warms the room. Confirm that it remains upright, the outlet and plug stay cool, and no burning smell, unusual noise or repeated tripping occurs.
- Switch off before leaving. Turn the controls off whenever the room is unoccupied and before sleeping. Let the appliance cool before moving it; store it where the cord and housing will not be damaged.
Calculate exactly what it costs to run
Use your own tariff rather than a universal hourly figure:
Cost = input power in kilowatts × hours the element runs at full power × electricity price per kilowatt-hour.
Convert watts to kilowatts by dividing by 1,000. A 2,000-watt heater is 2 kW; a 1,000-watt heater is 1 kW. If the element runs continuously for three hours on a tariff of $0.30 per kWh, the estimate is 2 × 3 × $0.30 = $1.80. This is an energy charge only; taxes, fixed supply charges and tiered tariffs may be billed separately.
Examples using New Zealand assumptions
EECA gives illustrative maximum costs using NZ$0.35 per kWh. Its figures are New Zealand examples, not current universal prices, and assume the element is operating at full rated power.
| Rated input | Maximum energy use per hour | EECA example at NZ$0.35/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 W (1 kW) | 1 kWh | About NZ$0.35 per hour |
| 2,000 W (2 kW) | 2 kWh | About NZ$0.70 per hour |
| 2,400 W (2.4 kW) | 2.4 kWh | About NZ$0.85 per hour |
The 2,000–2,400 W range is common for portable heaters in EECA’s guidance. Your price, voltage, heater setting and operating time may differ, so substitute the figures from your electricity bill.
Account for thermostat cycling
Nameplate wattage describes the rate while the heating element is energised. Once the room reaches its target, a thermostat may turn the element off for part of the elapsed time. For a closer estimate, multiply by the fraction of time the element is actually on:

Cost = kW × elapsed hours × duty cycle × price per kWh.
For example, a 2 kW heater operating for four hours with an estimated 50% duty cycle on a $0.30/kWh tariff would use about 2 × 4 × 0.5 = 4 kWh, costing about $1.20. The duty cycle changes with insulation, outdoor temperature, door openings, thermostat setting and room size; it is not a guaranteed percentage.
Measure instead of guessing
For a real household figure, record the electricity meter before and after a comparable heating period, or use a properly rated energy monitor if its instructions permit heater loads. Compare readings under similar weather, room temperature and runtime. Do not use an inexpensive monitor or adaptor that is not rated for the heater’s current.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reduce running costs without reducing safety
Heat only an occupied space
Turn the heater on shortly before the room is needed and off when everyone leaves. Heating an empty room is runtime with no useful benefit. A timer can help schedule occupied periods, but it does not remove the need to switch the heater off when you leave or sleep.
Contain the heat
Close doors where practical so warm air is not lost to unused rooms. Keep the heater’s required clearance open; do not use curtains, furniture or improvised screens to trap heat around the unit. Draughts, poor insulation, large windows and low outdoor temperatures can increase runtime, so the same heater will cost more in a leaky room than in a well-insulated one.

Set a temperature that is comfortable rather than overheating the room. EECA estimates that a thermostat can reduce energy use by around 9% under its stated assumptions: an uncontrolled average temperature of 23°C compared with an ideal 21°C. That is an example under specific conditions, not a saving guarantee for every household.

Use the lowest effective power
If the heater has multiple power levels, use the lowest setting that maintains comfort. Lower input can extend warm-up time but may reduce consumption when the room would otherwise reach the target quickly. Judge the result by the room temperature and meter reading, not by the heater style’s name.
Know when to stop and get help
- Hot plug, outlet or faceplate: switch off, disconnect if safe and stop using that outlet until a qualified electrician checks it.
- Hot or damaged cord: disconnect and arrange authorised inspection or repair; never tape over damage and continue operating.
- Burning smell, smoke, arcing or discolouration: stop use immediately and follow local emergency procedures if there is a fire risk.
- Repeated circuit trips: stop resetting the breaker and have the circuit and appliance assessed by a qualified professional.
- Tip-over, cracked casing or failed controls: remove the heater from service. Do not operate it again until an authorised repair service confirms it is safe.
- Need for an extension cord: do not improvise. Relocate the heater or arrange a suitable wall outlet.
Apply the right local rules
The clearance, direct-outlet and switch-off guidance above comes from U.S. CPSC and USFA sources and is written for U.S. consumers. Their fire statistics should be read in that context. Electrical installation rules, plug designs and certification marks vary elsewhere; follow the requirements for the country where the heater is installed and the manufacturer’s instructions.
EECA’s cost examples and thermostat estimate are New Zealand-specific. Its page was updated 25 June 2026, but electricity tariffs change, so use the rate on your own bill. In the United Kingdom, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero published a consultation on local space-heater standards on 25 March 2026, closing 20 May 2026. A consultation discusses proposed ecodesign updates; it is not a universal current product label or a final rule.

A practical decision checklist
Before buying or using a portable electric heater, confirm each point:
- The output suits the room and the electrical circuit.
- An adjustable thermostat is available if you need automatic cycling.
- Tip-over and overheat protection, instructions and locally recognised safety certification are present.
- You can maintain the required clearance on every side during use.
- The cord and plug can reach a wall outlet directly without an extension, adaptor or power strip.
- The unit can be monitored and switched off whenever the room is empty or occupants go to bed.
- You know your electricity price per kWh and can calculate a realistic cost from actual runtime.
The safest low-cost setup is therefore not a particular heater style. It is a correctly sized, certified unit with effective thermostat control, placed safely, operated only when needed and evaluated against your own tariff and room conditions.
