A card scraper smooths wood by shaving fibers with a small hook, or burr, turned along its edge. To use one, prepare a straight, square edge, form a modest burr with a polished burnisher, then test the cut on scrap before working on your project. Refresh the edge when useful shavings give way to dust.
What a card scraper does
A card scraper is a flat woodworking tool used to refine a surface and address tearout or machining marks. Its cutting action comes from a small burr on the edge: when the burr is sharp and properly formed, it shaves wood fibers rather than simply rubbing the surface.
What you need
- A card scraper with an edge that can be made straight and square.
- A smooth, polished burnisher harder than the scraper. Lee Valley Tools’ care-and-use instructions say the burnisher should be harder than the scraper and polished to avoid creating a ragged hook: Lee Valley Tools scraper care and use.
- A fine diamond plate or sharpening stone if the edge needs preparation. Sharpening approaches differ; neither is the only valid option.
- A vise or padded holding blocks if you want help stabilizing the scraper. A vise is useful, not essential.
- Scrap wood for checking the cut.
Prepare the scraper edge
File and hone when the edge is new or damaged
If the edge is uneven or damaged, file it straight and square. Hone the edge to remove roughness; some methods also hone the faces near the edge. Keep the edge square rather than rounding it over. The preparation sequence varies among woodworking guides, but the goal is a clean, straight edge ready to take a burr.
Hold it securely
You can hold the scraper upright in a vise, using padded jaws or wood blocks to protect it. You can also work without a vise if you can control the tool safely. Keep your hands clear of both the scraper edge and the burnisher.

Turn a small burr with a burnisher
- Start with a polished burnisher. A smooth surface helps form a clean hook rather than a ragged one.
- Draw the metal toward the edge. Some methods begin by running the burnisher flat against the scraper face toward the edge.
- Run the burnisher along the upright edge. Use controlled pressure to prepare the edge for the hook.
- Tilt slightly and make a controlled pass. This turns a small burr. Stop when a modest hook has formed; the exact angle and number of passes depend on the method and are not universal.
Guides differ on whether to form hooks on one or both sides and on the precise sequence of honing and burnishing. The shared aim is a clean edge with a small, usable hook, not a large burr.
Test the cut before using the scraper
Try the scraper on scrap wood. A working burr should produce shavings; if the tool only makes dust, the edge may need more preparation or a fresh burr. Check the cut before moving to the workpiece rather than assuming that a particular number of burnisher passes has worked.

Use the scraper and know when to refresh it
Keep the scraper under control and use pressure that lets its edge cut rather than skid or rub. The exact hand position and stroke direction depend on the work and are not established as one universal technique. When a previously useful cut degrades from shavings to dust, reburnish the edge; if the edge itself is no longer straight or clean, reset it before turning another burr.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why sharpening instructions differ
Some instructions emphasize filing, honing with a diamond plate, and removing unwanted burrs before burnishing. Others focus on squaring the edge and turning hooks on both sides, or specify a slight burnisher angle and light pressure. These are variations in method and detail, not a reason to pursue a large hook. Use a consistent approach that produces a clean edge and confirm it on scrap.
