Do not flush again. Turn the shut-off valve clockwise, place towels around the base, put on rubber gloves, and lower the water level if necessary. Then try the gentlest method first: hot—not boiling—water, dish soap or shampoo, or careful manual pressure. These methods are mainly suitable for soft clogs caused by excess toilet paper or waste. A flushed object, recurring blockage, sewage backup, or clog that will not respond to gentle attempts may require a toilet auger or a licensed plumber.
Overflow prevention comes first: Do not flush repeatedly. Turn the toilet’s shut-off valve clockwise until it stops. If water is still entering the bowl, remove the tank lid and close the rubber flapper at the bottom of the tank. Put towels around the toilet base, wear gloves, and remove some bowl water into a bucket if the level is too high for the method you want to try. These steps help prevent contaminated water from spreading across the floor. See Home Depot’s clogged-toilet guidance for the basic shut-off procedure.

Before you start: identify the kind of clog
Household techniques are most likely to help when the toilet is draining slowly and the blockage consists of paper, waste, or another soft material. They are not a reliable way to retrieve a toy, towel, hygiene product, or other solid object lodged deep in the toilet trap.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Soft clog: Try the methods below, beginning with hot water or soap.
- Visible object: Remove it carefully if you can reach it without pushing it farther into the trap.
- Deep, recurring, or unknown clog: Stop improvised attempts and use a toilet auger or call a plumber.
Keep a bucket, towels, rubber gloves, and eye protection nearby. Never use a method that could splash contaminated water toward your face.

1. Pour in hot, non-boiling water
Heat water in a sink or bathtub until it is hot but not boiling. Pour approximately one gallon into the bowl gradually, stopping well before the water reaches the rim. The heat and added water pressure may soften paper and waste and help a slowly draining soft clog move through the trap.
Best for: A soft paper-and-waste clog that is already draining slowly.
Important: Do not pour boiling water into a porcelain toilet. Excessive heat can crack the porcelain. Hot water is not guaranteed to dissolve or move every blockage. Both Home Depot and Lowe’s recommend hot, non-boiling water for this type of attempt.

2. Add liquid dish soap or shampoo
Make sure the bowl is not close to overflowing. Add about one-half cup of liquid dish soap or shampoo, then wait several minutes so it can lubricate the obstruction. If there is room in the bowl, add hot—but not boiling—water afterward.
The likely benefit is lubrication and limited softening of paper or organic material, not a powerful chemical reaction. This is most appropriate for a soft obstruction rather than a solid object.
Best for: Paper, waste, and other soft clogs.
Do not mix products: Never combine dish soap with bleach, toilet-bowl cleaner, or another chemical. Household cleaners can react unpredictably. Poison Control’s guidance on dish soap explains why mixing cleaning products is unsafe.

3. Try baking soda and vinegar cautiously
If the bowl is approximately half full—not at risk of overflowing—add about one cup of baking soda. Slowly add vinegar and let the mixture sit. Reassess the water level afterward; do not immediately flush if the bowl remains high.
Home-improvement guides list this as a possible home remedy, but the chemistry has limits. The reaction mainly produces carbon dioxide. In an open toilet drain, it generally does not create enough pressure to clear a tough clog, so treat it as a low-risk experiment for a minor soft blockage rather than a dependable substitute for mechanical clearing. This limitation is discussed by Poison Control.
Never mix bleach with vinegar, acidic toilet cleaner, ammonia, or another cleaning product. Bleach combined with acids can produce chlorine gas, while bleach combined with ammonia can produce chloramine gas. If fumes develop, leave the area, get fresh air, ventilate it only if you can do so safely, and contact Poison Control or emergency services as appropriate.
4. Remove a visible object by hand
If you can clearly see and safely reach the obstruction, put on sturdy rubber gloves and remove it carefully. This can be appropriate for excessive paper, a washcloth, a toy, or another object sitting near the bowl opening.
Do not reach blindly into the trap. Do not force a sharp, fragile, or breakable object, and do not push an unreachable obstruction deeper into the drain. If the item is lodged out of reach or may have entered the building’s drain line, stop and use a toilet auger or call a professional.

- WHY KORKY: Made in America, our high quality toilet products are universal & specific to your toilet repair needs no matter if your toilet is modern or older. Our repair parts are easy to install & made exclusively from long lasting chlorine red rubber.
Best for: A soft or nearby obstruction close to the bowl opening.
A bare wire can scratch porcelain and can push a solid object farther into the trap. Do not force it deep into the toilet. For a deeper or recurring blockage, a guarded toilet auger is a better-designed tool.
6. Use a warm-water-filled plastic bottle to create pressure
Fill a flexible two-liter bottle with warm water. Put on gloves and eye protection. Invert the bottle and position its mouth as close to the drain opening as practical, then squeeze it to push water into the trap.
This attempts to reproduce some of the water-pressure effect of a plunger, but it is awkward and can cause splashback. Use it only when the bowl is not near overflowing. Stop if you cannot position the bottle without forcing contaminated water toward yourself. Home Depot describes this approach when the bottle has a sufficiently large opening.
Best for: A soft clog with enough space in the bowl for controlled pressure.
7. Wrap a toilet brush in a plastic bag
Place a sturdy plastic bag over the toilet-brush bristles and secure it around the handle with a rubber band. Insert the covered brush into the drain opening and use controlled up-and-down strokes to disturb a nearby soft clog.
Best for: A close, soft obstruction when no other tool is available.

- EFFICIENT SIZING: These hideaway caddies each measure 6.5 inches x 6.5 inches x 16.5 inches total with a rubber base to prevent the storage caddy from tipping or sliding, making it ideal for storing next to the toilet
This method is less sanitary and less reliable than a real toilet plunger or toilet auger. Discard the bag afterward, disinfect the brush according to its material and the product instructions, and wash your hands thoroughly.
What not to do
- Do not keep flushing. A blocked toilet can overflow with very little warning.
- Do not use boiling water. It can damage or crack porcelain.
- Do not mix cleaning chemicals. In particular, never combine bleach with vinegar, acids, ammonia, or toilet-bowl cleaner. Poison Control’s toilet-cleaner guidance covers the gas hazards.
- Do not assume ordinary liquid drain cleaner is safe for a toilet. Drano says its common liquid, gel, and foaming clog removers should not be used in toilets because the toilet trap may prevent the product from reaching the blockage. It also warns not to use a plunger during or after use because chemical product may remain in the drain. See Drano’s product guidance.
- Do not force a wire or improvised tool deep into the trap. It may scratch porcelain, worsen the blockage, or damage the toilet.
When to stop DIY attempts
Stop experimenting and call a licensed plumber or use a properly designed toilet auger if any of the following applies:
- The clog followed a flushed toy, towel, hygiene product, or other object.
- The blockage keeps returning after the toilet appears to clear.
- Multiple fixtures are slow or backing up.
- Sewage is backing up into the toilet, tub, or floor drain.
- The water does not respond to gentle methods.
- You cannot identify the cause or cannot work without risking splashback or chemical exposure.
A toilet auger is designed specifically for the bends in a toilet drain. For example, RIDGID lists its K-3 manual toilet auger for toilets and urinals with a three-foot cable and a vinyl guard intended to help protect the porcelain. That guarded design makes a toilet auger preferable to forcing a bare wire deeper into the trap.
If contaminated water has overflowed onto the floor, keep skin and eyes away from it, clean and disinfect affected hard surfaces, and wash your hands thoroughly. If anyone inhales irritating fumes or gets a cleaning chemical in the eyes or on the skin, leave the area and contact Poison Control or emergency services as appropriate.

Flush only human waste and toilet paper. Do not flush wipes—including products marketed as “flushable”—paper towels, hygiene products, toys, grease, or household trash. The EPA advises flushing only human waste and toilet paper because other products can clog household plumbing and wastewater systems.
Use a reasonable amount of toilet paper, particularly if the toilet already drains slowly. For future emergencies, keep a flange-style toilet plunger and a toilet-specific auger available; they are safer and more effective for toilet drains than improvised tools or ordinary chemical drain cleaner.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the fastest way to unclog a toilet without a plunger?
For a soft clog, dish soap followed by carefully added hot, non-boiling water is a reasonable first attempt. Do not use boiling water, keep the bowl from overflowing, and do not repeatedly flush. If the clog is solid, deep, or recurring, household methods may not work.

No. Use hot water from a sink or bathtub, not boiling water. Excessive heat can crack porcelain.
Recommended Free Tools
Will baking soda and vinegar unclog a toilet?
It may help with a minor soft clog, but it is not dependable for a tough blockage. The reaction mainly produces carbon dioxide and generally does not create enough pressure in an open toilet drain to clear a deep clog.
Is Drano safe to use in a toilet?
Drano says its common liquid, gel, and foaming clog removers should not be used in toilets because the toilet trap may prevent them from reaching the blockage. Never add a plunger after using a chemical product that may remain in the drain.
When should I call a plumber for a clogged toilet?
Call a licensed plumber when the clog follows a flushed object, keeps returning, affects multiple fixtures, causes sewage backup, does not respond to gentle methods, or cannot be addressed safely. A toilet-specific auger is another appropriate escalation for many deeper toilet clogs.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Prevent an overflow, then try hot non-boiling water, dish soap, or another gentle method for a soft clog. Avoid boiling water, chemical drain cleaner, and all dangerous cleaner combinations. If an object is lodged, the clog returns, sewage backs up, or gentle attempts fail, use a guarded toilet auger or call a licensed plumber.
