A tablesaw tune-up starts by aligning the blade to the miter slot, then checking the fence, riving knife or splitter, bevel stops and tabletop. Disconnect power before making adjustments, and use the owner’s manual for the exact saw: adjustment methods vary by design.

Before you adjust anything

Unplug the saw or disconnect it from its power source using the method specified in its manual. Bosch’s safety instructions call for disconnecting power before certain adjustments involving the table insert, blade, riving knife, anti-kickback device and guard. Keep the intended guard and kickback-prevention devices in working order, and reinstall them before operating the saw. See Bosch’s table-saw safety instructions.

Gather the tools your saw’s procedure calls for. A dial indicator with a suitable alignment accessory can show small differences; a combination square offers a simpler check described by WOOD Magazine’s tune-up guide. Do not use another model’s instructions to guess which bolts to loosen or how to move an assembly.

Align the blade with the miter slot

The miter slot is the reference for this check. Compare the same blade tooth at the front and rear of the slot; using different teeth can make the blade’s tooth set distort the comparison.

#1 Best Overall
Neoteck 0-1" Digital Dial Indicator Table Saw Gauge Suitable for Table Saws
  • 【Professional Table Saw Gauge】Neoteck table saw gauge is designed according to the standard miter grooves(3/8 inch x 3/4 inch). It can check table saw miter slot to blade squareness, blade and fence alignment, arbor and blade run-out, or any other alignment and measurement you want, in order to make the table saw in its best condition, which is suitable for most table saws and can be widely used for aligning and calibrating work, shop machinery, band saws, drill presses.
  • 【Accurate Digital Dial Indicator】The measuring range of the digital indicator is from 0 - 1 inch (0 ~ 25.4 mm) with high resolution up to 0.0005 inch (0.01 mm),also it is switchable between mm and inch with zero setting function. Compared with the dial gauge, Neoteck digital indicator can provide more convenient use experience and quickly help you finish the alignment work.
  • 【CNC Anodized Aluminum Bars】2PCS 3/4 inch adjustable, CNC-machined anodized aluminum bars with 3 chute partitions for enhanced stability and usability. The rod features 6 holes for a digital dial indicator, facilitating precise adjustments across various workshop machines, regardless of differences in chamfer groove and blade distances.(Note: Suitable for table saws with a groove width of 3/4" (19mm) or more; adjustable via screws for optimal fit if the groove width exceeds 3/4" (19mm))
  • 【Easy to Install】You can quickly set-up, tune up and check the accuracy of your shop's tools. This system is the self-adjusting “Smart Bar” that will stay tight in a miter slot that isn’t the same size along it’s slot length. You only need to adjust the spring plungers once, and after that, its a perfect fit in the miter slot, which is more efficient and convenient.
  • 【Practical Package】Package includes: 2 x anodized aluminum Bar, 1 x digital dial indicator, 1 x back cover, 2 x plum blossom nut, 2 x spring plunger, 2 x hexagon socket nut, 2 x hexagon socket wrench, 2 x metal shop. What's more, the practical storage case can well protect your table saw gauge set and it is more convenient for you to store the gauge and can be carried with you to everywhere.
  1. Choose and mark one tooth. Rotate the blade by hand as needed to bring that tooth to the front measuring position.
  2. Measure the distance from the marked tooth to the same side of the miter slot, using a dial indicator or the combination-square method described in the WOOD Magazine guide.
  3. Rotate the blade so the marked tooth is at the rear, then measure again from the corresponding side of the slot.
  4. Compare the readings. WOOD Magazine advises striving for a discrepancy within .002 inches. That is its setup guidance, not a universal tolerance specified by every saw manufacturer.

If adjustment is needed, follow the manual for your saw’s design. Some saws are adjusted by shifting the tabletop; others require moving the trunnion assembly. Tightening hardware can change the setting, so repeat the measurement after securing the adjustment. The detailed methods and the .002-inch target are in WOOD Magazine’s blade-alignment guide.

Check the fence against the slot

Use the miter slot as a reference and compare the fence’s position near the front and rear. Follow the saw manual for adjustment and for the appropriate setup for the operation. WOOD Magazine describes a slight rear opening for one ripping setup, but that is not a universal toe-out specification: do not assume the same setting suits every saw or task. Recheck alignment periodically and after moving or servicing the saw.

  • Extended 18cm Rod: Boasts an 18cm dial gauge rod that offers a wider operating range compared to standard 13cm rods; covers diverse measurement needs for small DIY projects large-scale woodworking tasks and various equipment sizes so you can tackle most of your alignment jobs with one tool
  • Durable & Ready-to-Use Design: The digital dial indicator is designed for durability, allowing for immediate out-of-the-box use. It includes 2 hex keys, so you can start calibrating your tools right away without the need for extra preparation

Check the riving knife, splitter and safeguards

With power disconnected, inspect the riving knife or splitter in relation to the blade. WOOD Magazine’s guide says the splitter should be behind and centered with the blade; check alignment again whenever it has been removed and reinstalled. The exact clearances and adjustment procedure depend on the saw, so use its manual.

OSHA explains that spreaders and anti-kickback fingers help prevent stock from squeezing the blade or being thrown back. Use the safeguards intended for your saw and the operation, and follow the manual’s directions for installing them. OSHA’s table-saw guidance also recommends maintaining blades, guiding stock parallel to the rip fence, and standing to the side to reduce exposure to kickback. It is workplace safety guidance; follow your saw maker’s instructions and applicable local requirements as well.

A Line It Basic, Table Saw Alignment Calibration Tool
  • The A-LINE-IT Basic Kit is the perfect starter kit for hobbyists and small shops. The A-LINE-IT Basic Kit comes with hardware and hex wrench for assembly, and instructions for expert guidance in getting the best performance and accuracy from your woodworking machinery.
  • The self-adjusting “Smart Bar” that will stay tight in a miter slot that isn’t the same size along it’s slot length. This makes the measuring process much more efficient since you don’t need to keep shimming or adjusting the miter bar for a snug fit.
  • Included is the precision 1" capacity dial indicator that reads in .001" increments for absolute precise measurements. Wether your measuring your table saw blade run-out or the parallelism of your fence to the miter slot, the A-Line-It Basic is the ideal device.
  • Dial indicator mounting bar measures 3/4” x 3/4” x 5-1/2”, miter groove bar measures 3/8” x 3/4" x 6-1/4". This setup will work with most table saw slots.
  • With the A-Line-It Basic you can also determine your depth of cut on your jointer and it can be use for planer alignment as well.

Verify the 90- and 45-degree stops

Check the blade at both the 90-degree and 45-degree settings with an appropriate square. If either setting is off, adjust the stops according to the saw manual rather than relying on a generic procedure. Recheck the setting after adjustment.

Clean and protect the tabletop

Clean the table surface so debris does not interfere with workpiece support or movement. WOOD Magazine’s older tune-up guidance suggests non-silicone wax to help reduce rust and sliding friction, but check the manufacturer’s instructions before applying wax or another surface product. See WOOD Magazine’s tablesaw tune-up overview.

When a cut signals a problem

Binding, burning or inconsistent cuts can be signs that alignment or setup needs attention. They are not proof of one particular fault: check blade-to-slot alignment and the fence, then inspect the blade and safeguards using the saw’s manual. OSHA identifies kickback as a major table-saw hazard, so stop and correct an unsafe setup rather than continuing through a binding cut.
