Start by identifying the exact machine, telematics unit, data field, time window, and alert that appear wrong. Then determine whether the value comes from GPS, the machine’s electronic control module (ECM), a direct sensor, or a platform calculation. Check installation, power, signal conditions, and diagnostic states before changing calibration or replacing hardware. Validate the reading against a trusted reference, preserve the evidence, and use the machine OEM’s and telematics provider’s model-specific procedures for testing, calibration, compatible parts, and repair.
Why telematics readings become misleading
A telematics dashboard is not a single sensor. It combines observations from a positioning receiver, machine networks, discrete inputs, analog or digital sensors, firmware, cellular communications, and software calculations. An apparently wrong value can therefore originate in the machine, the wiring, the telematics unit, the radio environment, the platform, or the map used to display it.

A misplaced marker does not by itself prove that the receiver or installation is defective. Similarly, an engine-hour, fuel, temperature, or motion value cannot be judged accurately until you know whether it is read from the machine ECM, a separate sensor, or inferred from another signal. Treat the first screenshot as a symptom to investigate, not as a repair diagnosis.
Define the symptom before testing anything
Write down the complete event before disconnecting a harness, clearing a fault, or recalibrating a sensor. Use one record for each affected asset and time period.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.
- Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current, Resistance, and Diode. This Multimeter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues. Suitable for Household Outlets, Fuses, Batteries (including Vehicles), Automotive Circuit Troubleshooting, Charging Systems, Testing electronics in Cars etc.
- Troubleshooting with Accuracy - This Multimeter has a sampling speed of 2 times per second; Built-in a backlight LCD display with 3 ½ digits (1999 count) 0.6”, and high polarity including negative and positive readings.
- Ensures Safety - Double fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading. The silicone cover can protect the multimeter from failing damage and prevent electric shocks. And low battery indication will be displayed when battery power is low.
- Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.
- Machine: make, model, serial number or fleet asset ID, and current hour or mileage display.
- Telematics unit: model, firmware version if visible, installation date, and mounting location.
- Field: location, engine hours, distance, speed, fuel, temperature, pressure, utilization, or a particular alert.
- Time window: local time zone, start and end time, operating state, and whether the dashboard may be showing delayed data.
- Pattern: consistently offset, drifting, intermittent, frozen, spiking, missing, or wrong only under particular conditions.
- Alert or diagnostic: exact text, code, severity, and when it appeared and cleared.
- Reference: machine display, service-tool value, known position, measured distance, or another trusted source captured at the same time.
Save the original export or screenshots with timestamps. A single screen image can hide reporting delay, a stale cache, a map-label error, or a temporary loss of source data.
Separate location errors from machine-data errors
When the mapped location looks wrong
First distinguish incorrect coordinates from an incorrect map presentation. If the latitude and longitude are plausible but the marker appears on the wrong road, parcel, or point of interest, the map layer may be at fault. If the coordinates themselves jump, drift, or place the asset far away, investigate positioning conditions and receiver installation.

GPS.gov notes that “Many things can degrade GPS positioning accuracy.” Its examples include blocked signals, indoor or underground operation, reflections from nearby surfaces, atmospheric conditions, satellite geometry, and receiver design. Tall structures, metal surfaces, roofs, cuttings, tree cover, and work beside buildings can all change the signal environment. Compare the same asset in an open area and in the problem area, and record whether the error is repeatable.
GPS.gov describes a typical accuracy of about 4.9 m (16 ft.) radius under open sky for GPS-enabled smartphones. That figure is for smartphones, not a guarantee for an equipment receiver. The same source cites a government signal-in-space commitment of a daily global average user range error of no more than 2.0 m (6.6 ft.) with 95% probability across healthy satellites, while explicitly distinguishing signal-in-space error from the accuracy an actual user experiences. Neither number is a universal tolerance for an off-highway machine.
When a machine value is wrong or missing
Determine the value’s source path. An engine-hour or engine-load field that should come from the ECM must be obtained through a compatible, authorized connection to that ECM or its relevant sensor. A GPS-derived motion estimate is not an equivalent substitute for an ECM value.
In guidance dated March 10, 2022, the U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration states, “Global positioning systems (GPS) cannot be used to identify the vehicle’s motion status.” That statement addresses U.S. electronic logging device (ELD) requirements for commercial motor vehicles. It is not a universal legal rule for construction equipment, but it illustrates an important diagnostic principle: identify the required source instead of assuming that a convenient proxy represents the machine’s own data.

FMCSA also says that retrievable ECM data must be accessed for the ELD fields covered by its rule. For a construction machine, use the OEM and telematics documentation to determine whether the installed unit supports the machine’s network, connector, protocol, authorization, and data list. If a field is absent, confirm that the machine actually exposes it and that the unit is configured to request it.
Use a source-and-symptom comparison
When two readings are available, compare them in a consistent order rather than deciding that one is correct by appearance.
| Comparison | What it can reveal | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| GPS, ECM, direct sensor, or platform-derived value | Whether the disagreement is between a source and a calculation | Source name, protocol or input, and configuration |
| Machine display versus telematics value | Whether the machine and remote system disagree at the same instant | Both values and synchronized timestamps |
| Event time versus dashboard time | Reporting delay, buffering, or stale data | Machine clock, device timestamp, server receipt time, and time zone |
| Stable error versus intermittent error | Configuration or calibration bias versus signal, power, or connection instability | Operating state and exact times the error starts and stops |
| Open-sky versus obstructed location | Environmental positioning effects | Structures, indoor/underground operation, terrain, and satellite visibility conditions |
| Reference measurement versus reported value | Magnitude and direction of the error | Reference method, conditions, tolerance, and person who made the check |
Inspect installation, mounting, and power
Mounting and vibration
Follow the telematics unit’s installation guide and inspect the unit without altering wiring first. Check that the mounting surface is secure, the orientation matches the guide, fasteners have not loosened, and the enclosure is not contacting a vibrating panel. Inspect visible harnesses and connectors for chafing, water entry, bent pins, corrosion, strain, or a connector that can move under vibration.
A Geotab firmware guide explains that its accelerometer calibrates while driving and that calibration can take one or two trips. Weak GPS can delay that process. The guide also warns that insecure mounting or excessive vibration can produce unreliable or incorrect accelerometer data. These are Geotab device details, not universal timing or mounting thresholds for every telematics product. Verify the device generation and current manual before applying them.

Check the applicable supply, ground, fuse, ignition sense, and any switched-power circuit according to the machine and device documentation. Look for symptoms that correlate with engine start, accessory loads, battery isolation, or a machine shutdown. A unit that repeatedly reboots can create gaps, duplicate events, or implausible totals even when the sensors themselves are healthy.
The same Geotab documentation describes low-voltage warning behavior, but it does not establish one voltage limit for all equipment. Do not copy a threshold from another model. A qualified person may use a digital multimeter when the OEM and telematics procedures specify where and how to measure. The FHWA weigh-in-motion calibration example lists a multimeter among its equipment, but that does not validate a particular meter or test point for every machine.

Connections to the ECM or sensors
Do not infer pinouts, termination, polarity, or compatible parts from a generic diagram. Confirm the machine’s connector and network requirements in the OEM service information and the telematics provider’s installation instructions. An apparently live unit can still be unable to retrieve a particular ECM parameter because the machine does not expose it, the adapter is incompatible, access is not authorized, or the configured parameter list is incomplete.
Review device and platform diagnostics
Open the unit’s diagnostic page and the platform’s event history. Export the records if possible, then note when each condition appeared, persisted, and cleared. Do not assume that a diagnostic name or threshold used by one product applies to another.

FMCSA’s ELD guidance provides useful categories for organizing an investigation: power faults, loss of ECM synchronization, timing problems, position failures, missing required data, recording problems, and transfer problems. In that ELD context, an ECM synchronization diagnostic occurs when required connectivity is lost; a positioning diagnostic is tied to failure to acquire a valid position measurement under the ELD rule; and a missing-data diagnostic occurs when a required field is absent. Other equipment platforms can use different names, timers, and severity levels, so use their own definitions.
Correlate diagnostics with the symptom. A location jump during a recorded positioning fault points to a different branch than a steady engine-hour offset with no power or network fault. A missing field that begins exactly when an ECM connection drops is different from a field that has never been supported by that machine model.
Validate the reading against a known reference
Do not recalibrate because a value merely looks suspicious. First choose a reference appropriate to the field and document the conditions.
- Location: use a known surveyed or clearly identifiable position, record the environment, and compare coordinates rather than only the map marker.
- Engine hours, speed, or distance: compare with the machine display or an OEM service reference at synchronized times. State whether the machine was moving, idling, or shut down.
- Fuel, temperature, pressure, or another sensor: use the OEM-approved service value or measurement method, with the sensor’s specified operating conditions.
- Alerts: capture the triggering value, threshold, hysteresis or clearing condition if documented, and the machine state when it fired.
Preserve the raw reading, reference value, timestamps, weather or site conditions when relevant, and every adjustment made. If the reference itself is uncertain, label it as provisional rather than treating it as truth.

The Federal Highway Administration’s 2022 Traffic Monitoring Guide says, “WIM calibration is performed to ensure that the data accuracy remains consistent and within the performance specification.” Its weigh-in-motion example compares measured weights and distances with known values, adjusts operating parameters, documents the result, and calls for a qualified technician using manufacturer procedures. That is a sound validation principle, not a calibration standard for excavators, loaders, agricultural machines, or other unrelated equipment. Use the tolerance and service method specified for the actual sensor and machine.
Check for timing and reporting effects
A dashboard can show a correct value at the wrong apparent time. Compare the machine clock, telematics-unit timestamp, cellular upload time, and platform receipt time. Check whether the unit stores data while out of coverage and uploads it later, whether the platform rounds values, and whether the display is showing the last known position rather than a live fix.
For intermittent errors, build a timeline that includes ignition state, movement, cellular coverage, satellite visibility, heavy electrical loads, vibration, and any diagnostic transition. A pattern that occurs only after a cold start suggests a different investigation from one that appears only beside a building or under a steel canopy.

Handle calibration and replacement safely
Calibration is a controlled change, not a guess. Before adjusting anything, record the current settings and the reference comparison. Confirm that the OEM or telematics provider permits field calibration, identify the required operating conditions, and use the specified sequence. Some units calibrate automatically during driving; others require a service tool, a stationary zero, a known load, or a qualified technician.
Do not install a replacement sensor, adapter, antenna, or harness solely because its connector appears to fit. Compatibility can depend on firmware, network protocol, termination, measurement range, environmental rating, and machine configuration. Use the exact part and procedure approved for the machine and device.
After a change, repeat the same reference test and retain before-and-after data. Confirm that the original symptom is gone without creating a new one, such as correct hours but lost location, or correct location but missing ECM fields.

Escalate with a complete evidence packet
Contact the machine OEM, authorized service organization, or telematics provider when a fault persists, a safety-critical value is involved, or the required procedure is not documented. Send:
- Machine make, model, serial number or asset identifier.
- Telematics unit model, firmware, installation date, and mounting location.
- Affected field, exact symptom, and start/end times with time zone.
- Raw exports or screenshots showing timestamps, not only a cropped map.
- Diagnostic codes and the times they appeared or cleared.
- Power, connector, ECM, and network observations made under the approved procedure.
- Reference value, measurement method, operating conditions, and observed difference.
- Any calibration, wiring, firmware, or part change already attempted.
Ask the provider to identify the source of the field, its expected units, update interval, validity flags, and behavior when the source is unavailable. Ask the OEM to confirm the supported data interface and the safe test points. This prevents a general troubleshooting article from being used as a substitute for model-specific electrical or mechanical instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhat published accuracy figures do—and do not—tell you
No general published accuracy statistic for off-highway equipment telematics, and no universal machine-data tolerance, was established for this troubleshooting method. Published figures must stay attached to their original conditions.
Geotab reported a 2022 closed-track validation on a 1.86-mile test loop using two medium-duty panel trucks with Mecanica Scientific Services Corp. That bounded, vendor-associated test does not establish performance for every machine, receiver, installation, terrain, or telematics provider. It is not a basis for ranking aftermarket and OEM systems across the market.
Use the tolerance specified by the applicable OEM, sensor, calibration procedure, contract, or regulatory requirement. Where no tolerance is stated, obtain one from the responsible manufacturer or service organization rather than inventing a pass/fail number.
A concise field checklist
- Identify the machine, unit, field, time window, alert, and error pattern.
- Save raw records and synchronize timestamps.
- Classify the value as GPS, ECM, direct sensor, or platform-derived.
- Separate a bad coordinate from a bad map label.
- Check signal environment, mounting security, vibration, connectors, power, and grounds using approved procedures.
- Review product-specific diagnostics and correlate them with the timeline.
- Compare with a trusted reference under documented conditions.
- Only then calibrate, update, repair, or replace components using OEM and provider instructions.
- Repeat the reference test and document the result.
- Escalate with the complete evidence packet if the discrepancy remains.
When the equipment should be taken out of service
Stop relying on the affected value for a safety, compliance, dispatch, load, or maintenance decision when it is missing, contradictory, or outside the documented tolerance. Follow the site’s safety procedure and the machine manufacturer’s instructions. A telematics discrepancy should not be used to justify operating a machine with an unresolved mechanical, electrical, braking, steering, lifting, or engine fault.
