How to Thaw Frozen Pipes Safely

A trickling faucet may mean a pipe is frozen. Use gentle heat on an accessible section, avoid open flames, and call a licensed plumber if the pipe is broken or the blockage cannot be reached or cleared.

A faucet that produces only a trickle may signal a frozen pipe. If you can locate and reach the frozen section, keep the faucet open and warm the pipe gradually with gentle heat. Never use an open flame. If the pipe has burst, shut off the main water valve; if you cannot find or safely reach the blockage, call a licensed plumber.

How to tell whether a pipe may be frozen

Turn on the affected faucet. A trickle or no water can indicate a frozen pipe, though low flow alone does not prove that freezing is the cause. Check exposed plumbing near exterior walls and where the water service enters the foundation, then look in accessible unheated spaces such as basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages and cabinets. The American Red Cross guidance on preventing and thawing frozen pipes identifies these as places to inspect.

How to thaw an accessible frozen pipe

  1. Leave the affected faucet open. As ice melts, water can begin moving through the pipe and help the blockage clear.
  2. Apply gentle heat to the frozen section. Use an electric heating pad, an electric hair dryer, towels soaked in hot water, or a portable space heater placed safely away from flammable materials. Warm the pipe gradually rather than concentrating intense heat in one spot.
  3. Continue until normal pressure returns. Keep the faucet open while warming the pipe. Once full water pressure is restored, check the rest of the home’s faucets for signs of other frozen lines.

The Red Cross lists these thawing methods; Consumer Reports’ frozen-pipe guidance, updated January 23, 2026, also cautions that a pipe may already have burst. If it has, water can escape as thawing begins, so pay attention to leaks while working.

What not to use

Do not thaw pipes with a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open-flame device. Intense heat can damage plumbing, and open flames create a fire risk. Do not put a portable heater near flammable materials.

When to stop and call a plumber

  • You find a broken pipe or active leak: Shut off the water at the main valve to limit damage, then contact a licensed plumber.
  • You cannot locate or reach the frozen section: Do not apply heat blindly or dismantle inaccessible plumbing; call a licensed plumber.
  • Gentle heat does not restore flow: If the pipe will not thaw, stop and get professional help.

Consumer Reports quotes John Galeotafiore, who oversees space-heater and air-conditioner testing there: “If you suspect the pipes are frozen, be careful when thawing them out because if the pipe has already burst, the water will come flowing out and flood your home.”

How to reduce the chance of another freeze

  • Insulate vulnerable spaces and water lines; use pipe sleeves or UL-listed heat tape or heat cable on exposed pipes as prevention.
  • Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors so warmer room air can reach pipes inside.
  • During very cold weather, let cold water drip from a faucet served by exposed piping and keep the home’s thermostat steady. If you will be away, the Red Cross advises leaving the heat on at no lower than 55°F.
  • Before cold weather, drain and store hoses and close the inside valve that supplies outdoor hose bibs.

After a freeze, test other faucets: pipes in more than one area may be affected.
