How to Tell Whether You Have a 15-Amp or 20-Amp Outlet

A T-shaped slot identifies a common 20A, 125V receptacle; two straight slots indicate a 15A model. Neither pattern confirms the circuit’s breaker, wiring, or capacity.

For common U.S. 125-volt receptacles, look at the slot pattern: two straight slots indicate a 15-amp NEMA 5-15R; a T-shaped slot indicates a 20-amp NEMA 5-20R. That identifies the receptacle’s configuration—not the circuit’s breaker, wiring, capacity, or code compliance. Don’t choose a replacement based on the face alone.

How to identify the receptacle by its face

This visual check applies to common U.S. 125V NEMA 5-series receptacles:

  • 15A, NEMA 5-15R: Two straight blade slots. It accepts the common 15A plug.
  • 20A, NEMA 5-20R: One slot has a T shape, allowing it to accept the sideways blade on a 20A plug as well as a standard 15A plug. Leviton identifies its DTC20-T duplex model as a 20A, 125V NEMA 5-20R receptacle (Leviton DTC20-T specifications).

A plug that has a horizontal blade generally requires a 20A receptacle. Do not force a plug into a receptacle that does not match it.

What the face pattern cannot tell you

The receptacle and the branch circuit are separate parts of the installation. A face pattern or device label does not establish the breaker rating, conductor size, circuit configuration, connected load, or whether the installation meets the code adopted by your local jurisdiction. A 20A receptacle does not upgrade a 15A circuit.

One manufacturer example illustrates another distinction: Leviton lists its AFTR1-T as a 15A, 125V NEMA 5-15R receptacle with 20A feed-through. “Feed-through” is a separate device specification; it does not make the receptacle a 20A model or establish that a particular circuit is suitable (Leviton AFTR1-T specifications).

Can a 15A receptacle be on a 20A circuit?

It can be permitted in the specific multiple-receptacle context described in NFPA code-development material reproducing NEC Table 210.21(B)(3): the table lists 15A receptacles on 15A circuits, and 15A or 20A receptacles on 20A circuits serving two or more receptacles or outlets. The material treats a single receptacle on an individual branch circuit separately, so the multiple-receptacle table should not be applied to every installation. The cited document does not establish which code edition or amendments apply where you live (NFPA response document, 2022 NEC code-development materials).

The same NFPA document reproduces Table 210.21(B)(2), which lists a maximum cord-and-plug-connected load of 12A for a 15A receptacle connected to a 15A or 20A circuit. This is the table value in that document’s code-development context, not a blanket assurance about every installation or a substitute for checking locally adopted requirements.

How to decide what you need

  1. Match the plug requirement. Check the appliance plug and its instructions. A 20A plug with a sideways blade needs a compatible 20A receptacle; do not alter the plug or force it into another pattern.
  2. Identify the existing receptacle. Use the slot pattern as a clue to the receptacle type, not as proof of circuit capacity.
  3. Have the circuit verified before changing anything. A qualified electrician can check the breaker, conductors, circuit arrangement, load, and the requirements adopted by your local authority. This is especially important for a single receptacle, an unusual installation, or a planned replacement.

The NFPA document reproduces committee language stating, “The branch circuit should be protected by the proper sized OCPD.” OCPD means overcurrent protective device; the statement reinforces that circuit protection must be appropriately sized, not inferred from the receptacle face.

Why a 20A replacement is not an upgrade

Replacing a 15A receptacle with a 20A model changes the receptacle, not the branch circuit. Whether that device is permitted depends on the circuit configuration and applicable local code. Do not install a 20A receptacle simply because a breaker appears to be 20A, or change a breaker to match a receptacle. If the breaker, wiring, or circuit details are unclear, ask a licensed electrician to inspect the installation.

This guidance is U.S.-focused on common 125V NEMA 5-series receptacles and NEC-related material. Local jurisdictions adopt codes and amendments; the applicable rules depend on where the work is done.
