1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo test a capacitor with a digital multimeter, first confirm the circuit is de-energized, safely discharge the capacitor, and isolate it from the circuit. Then use a meter with capacitance mode, wait for the reading to settle, and compare the result with the capacitor’s marked value and tolerance. A capacitance reading is useful, but it does not prove the part is healthy in every respect.
Prepare the circuit and capacitor safely
Turning off power does not necessarily make a capacitor safe: it can retain charge after the circuit is disconnected. Fluke warns in its capacitance measurement guide that capacitors may remain charged. Fluke’s 287/289 manual likewise says to disconnect circuit power and discharge high-voltage capacitors before measuring capacitance (Fluke 287/289 User Manual, “Measuring Capacitance”).
- Switch off circuit power. Set the meter to voltage mode and verify that power is off. Follow the equipment’s safe isolation procedure.
- Discharge the capacitor using an appropriate procedure. Follow the meter manual and applicable work procedure; do not short the terminals with a screwdriver or other tool. Fluke’s guide gives an example of placing a 20,000 Ω, 5 W resistor across the capacitor terminals for five seconds, then checking with the meter that it is discharged. This is Fluke’s example, not a universal discharge instruction or guarantee for every capacitor, stored-energy level, or work environment.
- Isolate the component. Once safely prepared, disconnect at least one lead from the circuit, or remove the capacitor. In-circuit paths can affect the measurement; Fluke’s guide instructs users to detach the capacitor from the circuit.
Measure capacitance with the DMM
- Check the meter’s capacitance capability and range. Select the capacitance function, often marked with a capacitor symbol or units such as nF or µF. The control and supported range vary by meter, so consult its manual.
- Connect the meter across the capacitor terminals. Observe the polarity markings on polarized capacitors and follow the meter manual’s instructions for lead connections.
- Wait for the display to settle. The meter may take time to complete the measurement or select a range. For small capacitance values, Fluke suggests using relative mode to compensate for test-lead capacitance.
- Compare the reading with the specification. Find the capacitance value and tolerance printed on the component or in its datasheet. Judge the reading against that specification, not against an assumed universal tolerance.
A DMM measures capacitance by charging the capacitor with a known current, measuring the resulting voltage, and calculating capacitance, according to Fluke’s guide. The meter’s supported range matters: an “OL” display can mean the capacitance exceeds the range, or it can indicate a faulty component. Check the manual and range before concluding the capacitor has failed.
What a capacitance reading can—and cannot—tell you
A capacitance-mode result is a direct measurement of capacitance within the meter’s supported range. A value outside the component’s stated tolerance is a reason to investigate or replace it, but a value within tolerance does not establish that every aspect of the capacitor is sound. Capacitors can fail as a short circuit, an open circuit, or through physical deterioration; deterioration may change capacitance, as Fluke explains in its measurement guide.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.
- Versatile Digital Multimeter - Accurately measures AC/DC Voltage, DC Current, Resistance, and Diode. This Multimeter is a really useful tool for solving industrial and household electrical issues. Suitable for Household Outlets, Fuses, Batteries (including Vehicles), Automotive Circuit Troubleshooting, Charging Systems, Testing electronics in Cars etc.
- Troubleshooting with Accuracy - This Multimeter has a sampling speed of 2 times per second; Built-in a backlight LCD display with 3 ½ digits (1999 count) 0.6”, and high polarity including negative and positive readings.
- Ensures Safety - Double fuse is anti-burn and protects from overloading. The silicone cover can protect the multimeter from failing damage and prevent electric shocks. And low battery indication will be displayed when battery power is low.
- Ease of Use - Support Data Hold and Continuity Buzzer. Includes Convenient feature like LCD Backlit Screen makes it easy to use in dimly light areas. Batteries/Set of Test Leads/User Manual are Included.
If your DMM has no capacitance mode, it cannot make this direct capacitance measurement. A resistance-mode display may change while a capacitor charges, but the cited Fluke material does not establish a universal resistance-only pass/fail procedure. Do not treat a changing resistance display as a definitive capacitor test.
