1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesInspect the carbide tip: rounded or chipped cutting edges, missing material, or a manufacturer’s wear mark indicating end of life are reasons to replace a masonry bit. A bit that drills slowly is not automatically worn out; material, tool choice, drilling mode, pressure, and dust removal can also affect progress. For anchor holes, confirm that the hole still meets the anchor manufacturer’s diameter specification.
What to inspect on the bit
Switch off the drill and let the bit cool before handling it. Examine the carbide head and cutting edges for rounded or blunt edges, chips, cracks, or missing material. Hilti identifies worn cutting edges and reduced drill-head geometry as common causes of inaccurate holes, and recommends replacement when the cutting edges are no longer sharp. Hilti’s concrete and masonry bit guidance
- Rounded or blunt edges: the cutting edges have lost their sharp profile.
- Chips or missing carbide: the head is damaged, not merely dirty.
- Visible wear indicator: follow the instructions for that exact bit model.
Do not confuse dust or residue on the head with damage; clean the bit enough to inspect it, without touching a hot tip.
How hole quality can signal wear
A bit may be worn if it no longer produces a clean, accurate hole. Hilti says inaccurate holes are commonly caused by worn cutting edges and reduced drill-head geometry. For anchor installation, check the drilled-hole diameter against the anchor manufacturer’s specification. A hole that is too large may fail to meet the installation requirement, so stop using a bit that cannot produce the required diameter.
#1 Best Overall
- FOR HARD SURFACES: Wear-resistant tungsten carbide tip drills into brick, concrete, tile, glass, ceramic, travertine and hard plastic without slipping. Reinforced tip keeps its edge to deliver clean, steady holes for wall anchors, grab bars and shelves
- FAST DUST REMOVAL: Dual U-groove flutes clear debris quickly, reducing clogging for smoother drilling. The masonry drill bit set is ideal for DIY and home repair. Start at low speed with light pressure and let the bit cool between holes to extend its life
- 10 BITS IN 7 SIZES: This concrete drill bit set includes 1/8", 5/32", 3/16", 1/4" (4 pcs), 5/16", 3/8" and 1/2" bits, Extra 1/4" bits provide handy spares for common drilling tasks. Comes with a storage case to keep all bits organized and easy to find
- FOR BATH, KITCHEN & CRAFTS: Ideal for drilling bathroom tile, mounting mirrors, cabinets and grab bars, or making drainage holes in ceramic pots. For tile and glass, use painter's tape to stop slipping, drill slowly & use water cooling to reduce chipping
- 3-FLAT SHANK FOR STANDARD DRILLS: Anti-slip shank fits standard keyed or keyless 3-jaw chucks on corded, cordless and hand drills, plus drill presses for a wobble-free hold. Use rotary mode only, Not for hammer drills, impact drivers or SDS rotary hammers
Check the model’s wear mark, if it has one
Some products have a manufacturer-defined wear indicator, but it is not a universal feature or threshold. Bosch says the integrated mark on its SDS-plus Bulldog Xtreme8 indicates when that bit is fully worn. Follow the guidance for the specific product rather than applying that mark or threshold to other masonry bits. Bosch Professional SDS-plus Bulldog Xtreme8 Rotary Hammer Bits
Slow drilling does not prove the bit is worn
Before replacing a bit solely because drilling has slowed, check whether the bit suits the material and drill, whether the tool is in the right mode, and whether dust is clearing from the hole. Excessive pressure, rebar, aggregate variation, the tool, technique, bit technology, and job conditions can all affect performance and bit life, according to Hilti’s guidance on concrete and masonry bits. A wrong tool or mode, poor dust removal, or unsuitable material can mimic wear or accelerate it.

- CARBIDE TIPS AND STEEL BODIES: Each bit combines a spear-shaped carbide cutting tip with a steel body and spiral flutes that guide loosened material along the bit; use speed, pressure, and cooling suited to the surface
- 3-FLAT SHANK FOR STANDARD DRILLS: Fits compatible keyed or keyless 3-jaw chucks on corded drills, cordless drills, hand drills, and drill presses; not for SDS rotary hammers or 1/4-inch impact-driver collets
- 12 BITS IN 7 SIZES: Includes one 1/8", one 5/32", two 3/16", four 1/4", two 5/16", one 3/8 masonry drill bit, and one 1/2" bit for pilot holes and step-up drilling
- FOR MATCHING PROJECT SURFACES: Select masonry drill bits for brick, concrete, cement, stucco, ceramic tile, glass, wood, and plastic; begin at low speed, use light pressure, keep the drill aligned, and add water on hard surfaces
- MARKED SIZES WITH STORAGE CASE: Visible size markings help identify each diameter, while the included transparent case keeps all 12 bits together for selection, transport, and storage between home repair and installation tasks
Use the bit on materials it is designed for. Hilti warns that unsuitable material can dull or damage a bit and may contribute to overheating or breakage. Worn, chipped, or damaged bits can reduce work quality and create a safety risk. Hilti, “How To Maintain Your Drill Bits” (February 4, 2026)
When to replace a masonry drill bit
- Replace it when the cutting edges are no longer sharp or the carbide head is visibly chipped or damaged.
- Replace it if it cannot reliably produce a hole to the required diameter, especially for an anchor installation.
- If the model has a wear indicator, replace it when the manufacturer’s instructions say it has reached its wear limit.
There is no dependable universal hole count or time limit for masonry-bit life. Conditions differ by material, tool, bit design, technique, and job; a fixed lifespan without test conditions would be misleading.

- 2 cutter carbide tip of masonry drill bit set maximizes carbide surface contact for longer bit life.
- Four flute design cleans debris out for fast, efficient drilling
- Three flats on shank eliminate bit slipping in chuck (except DW5232, DW5233, DW5237, DW5238)
What to check before buying a replacement
Match the replacement to both the drill and the work. Check the shank interface, tool type and mode, hole diameter, working length, and base material. The product examples below illustrate why compatibility matters; they are not interchangeable bit types.
| Bit example | Interface and intended tool | Material or feature |
|---|---|---|
| Bosch CYL-3 | Cylindrical shank; for rotary and impact drill/drivers | Concrete bit with carbide construction |
| Bosch Bulldog Xtreme8 | SDS-plus; for rotary hammers | Integrated wear mark indicates when the bit is fully worn |
These specifications are product-specific. Confirm that the replacement’s diameter and working length suit the hole, and that its stated material application and interface match your setup. Bosch Professional CYL-3 Drill Bit
