How to Choose Drill Bit Sizes for Wall Anchors and Masonry Screws

Choose a drill bit from the exact anchor or masonry screw instructions—not from the plug label or screw diameter. Check wall compatibility, hole depth and installation requirements too.

There is no single drill-bit size that works for every wall anchor or masonry screw. Identify the exact fixing and wall material, then follow that product’s stated drill diameter, hole depth and installation instructions. A plug’s nominal size, a screw’s outside diameter and the required hole diameter are different specifications unless the manufacturer says otherwise.

What drill bit size do I need for this wall anchor?

Use the drill diameter specified for the exact anchor model and variant—not a size inferred from the plug label, screw or anchor length. For example, fischer specifies a 12 mm drill diameter for its UX 12 × 70 universal plug. Its S 8 expansion plug calls for an 8 mm drill diameter and a minimum 60 mm hole depth. These are product-specific examples, not a general sizing chart.

Check the fixing’s technical information for the hole diameter and minimum depth. Follow its other instructions too: suitable base material, drilling mode, hole cleaning, embedment, edge distance and screw dimensions can all matter. The fischer product pages for the UX 12 × 70 and S 8 give specifications for those products.

Does a masonry screw use the same size hole as a wall plug?

Not necessarily. A plastic plug is installed in a drilled hole and paired with a separate screw; a direct concrete or masonry screw has its own hole and installation requirements. For example, the cited fischer FBS 5 6 × 45 M6/9 variant specifies a 5 mm drill diameter. That value applies to that screw variant and its stated application, not to all masonry screws. Its product information describes suitability in dense masonry such as solid sand-lime brick and includes installation guidance.

10-Piece Masonry Drill Bit Set & Concrete Drill Bit Set, 7 Sizes, 1/8"-1/2"
  • FOR HARD SURFACES: Wear-resistant tungsten carbide tip drills into brick, concrete, tile, glass, ceramic, travertine and hard plastic without slipping. Reinforced tip keeps its edge to deliver clean, steady holes for wall anchors, grab bars and shelves
  • FAST DUST REMOVAL: Dual U-groove flutes clear debris quickly, reducing clogging for smoother drilling. The masonry drill bit set is ideal for DIY and home repair. Start at low speed with light pressure and let the bit cool between holes to extend its life
  • 10 BITS IN 7 SIZES: This concrete drill bit set includes 1/8", 5/32", 3/16", 1/4" (4 pcs), 5/16", 3/8" and 1/2" bits, Extra 1/4" bits provide handy spares for common drilling tasks. Comes with a storage case to keep all bits organized and easy to find
  • FOR BATH, KITCHEN & CRAFTS: Ideal for drilling bathroom tile, mounting mirrors, cabinets and grab bars, or making drainage holes in ceramic pots. For tile and glass, use painter's tape to stop slipping, drill slowly & use water cooling to reduce chipping
  • 3-FLAT SHANK FOR STANDARD DRILLS: Anti-slip shank fits standard keyed or keyless 3-jaw chucks on corded, cordless and hand drills, plus drill presses for a wobble-free hold. Use rotary mode only, Not for hammer drills, impact drivers or SDS rotary hammers

Check the exact screw variant’s documentation rather than transferring a diameter from a plug or another screw. The fischer FBS 5 product page describes its specific requirements.

How to choose and install the right size

  1. Identify the fixing system. Determine whether you have a plastic plug with a separate screw or a direct screw anchor. Their installation specifications are not interchangeable.
  2. Identify the wall material. Confirm that the product is intended for the actual substrate, such as concrete, solid brick or hollow masonry. Being able to drill a hole in a material does not establish that the fixing is suitable for it.
  3. Find the exact product data. Check the model and variant for the stated drill diameter and minimum hole depth. Do not substitute the screw’s outside diameter, plug’s nominal size or plug length for the drill diameter.
  4. Follow the full installation procedure. Check requirements for drilling mode, cleaning the hole, embedment, edge distance, screw dimensions and installation position.
  5. Use the specified bit and verify the result as instructed. If the hole is damaged or oversized, or the fixing does not install as directed, stop. Consult the product instructions or select a suitable fixing system rather than improvising with a larger screw.

Compare the fixing, not just the bit size

When more than one product might work, compare the complete requirements in each product’s documentation:

DYRECELVE 12-Piece Masonry Drill Bit Set and Concrete Drill Bit Set
  • CARBIDE TIPS AND STEEL BODIES: Each bit combines a spear-shaped carbide cutting tip with a steel body and spiral flutes that guide loosened material along the bit; use speed, pressure, and cooling suited to the surface
  • 3-FLAT SHANK FOR STANDARD DRILLS: Fits compatible keyed or keyless 3-jaw chucks on corded drills, cordless drills, hand drills, and drill presses; not for SDS rotary hammers or 1/4-inch impact-driver collets
  • 12 BITS IN 7 SIZES: Includes one 1/8", one 5/32", two 3/16", four 1/4", two 5/16", one 3/8 masonry drill bit, and one 1/2" bit for pilot holes and step-up drilling
  • FOR MATCHING PROJECT SURFACES: Select masonry drill bits for brick, concrete, cement, stucco, ceramic tile, glass, wood, and plastic; begin at low speed, use light pressure, keep the drill aligned, and add water on hard surfaces
  • MARKED SIZES WITH STORAGE CASE: Visible size markings help identify each diameter, while the included transparent case keeps all 12 bits together for selection, transport, and storage between home repair and installation tasks
  • Fixing system: a plastic expansion or universal plug with a separate screw, or a direct screw anchor.
  • Substrate compatibility: the stated wall material and whether it is solid or hollow.
  • Hole specifications: the required diameter and depth for the exact model.
  • Installation constraints: cleaning, drilling mode, embedment, edge distance and screw or fixture dimensions.
  • Application and load: the manufacturer’s stated use and any relevant approval or load data. Diameter alone does not establish capacity.

When a drill-bit size is not enough

For heavy, overhead, safety-critical or regulated fixings, choose a product whose technical documentation covers both the substrate and the application, and follow the relevant design and installation instructions. A drill-bit diameter by itself cannot tell you whether an anchor has sufficient capacity.

Manufacturer instructions can be terse: Rawlplug’s R-4ALL product card says, “Drill a hole of required diameter.” Its technical table supplies the product-specific diameter and depth; the phrase is not a universal sizing rule. Check the selected size’s table and installation guidance. See the Rawlplug R-4ALL product card. Instructions also vary between model variants: the separate fischer FBS 5 P product page notes hole-cleaning requirements for that variant.
