“Mild” is not a standardized detergent category established by the EPA sources cited here, so the word alone does not tell you what was assessed. Before buying, check the exact product’s EPA Safer Choice listing, look for the separate Fragrance-Free designation if avoiding fragrance materials matters to you, and read the label directions and warnings. Certification is a useful screening signal, not a guarantee that every person will tolerate a product.
What “mild” does—and doesn’t—tell you
A detergent labeled “mild” may sound reassuring, but the term by itself does not specify which ingredients or product characteristics were evaluated. Ask what the manufacturer means by the claim, then check the product’s directions, warnings, and disclosures against your particular concern. “Mild,” “unscented,” “hypoallergenic,” and “fragrance-free” are not interchangeable claims.
Use EPA Safer Choice as a verifiable screen
The voluntary EPA Safer Choice program evaluates every chemical ingredient in a product and also considers product-level criteria, including performance, packaging, and pH. Products must meet performance standards for their category. You can read the program’s overview at EPA’s Learn About the Safer Choice Label and the Safer Choice Standard and Criteria.
Look for the Safer Choice label on the exact detergent, then verify that product in EPA’s searchable product directory. The directory includes a fragrance-free filter; listings and formulations can change, so a general claim or an old listing is not enough to confirm a current product.

If fragrance is your concern, check for the separate designation
A Safer Choice-certified detergent may contain fragrance ingredients that meet EPA’s fragrance criteria. The general Safer Choice label therefore does not mean a product contains no fragrance materials. EPA’s Safer Choice FAQ explains the distinct Fragrance-Free designation: it identifies products EPA has reviewed as containing no fragrance materials. Check for that specific designation if avoiding fragrance materials is important to you.
For more detail on the criteria applied to fragrances allowed in certified products, see EPA’s Safer Choice Criteria for Fragrances.

A quick check before you buy
- Decide what “mild” means for your needs. Are you trying to avoid fragrance materials, or assessing another concern? The word on its own does not answer that.
- Check the exact product for EPA Safer Choice. Confirm it in EPA’s searchable directory rather than relying only on a broad product-family claim.
- Use the Fragrance-Free filter if needed. A Safer Choice label alone does not establish that a detergent is fragrance-free.
- Read the package directions and warnings. Review the manufacturer’s disclosures that relate to your concern, and use the product as directed.
What certification cannot tell you
Safer Choice is a product-screening standard, not an assurance of personal tolerance or medical suitability. The EPA materials describe criteria for products; they do not establish a universal “mildest detergent” ranking or guarantee that an individual will have no reaction. Choose based on the specific concern you are addressing, and do not treat “mild” as a substitute for ingredient and label information.
